Great vid! Best sentence I've heard in the past few weeks: "We still need to ask questions to see if any piece of information truly supports the main point."
Thank you! :) Sadly, educational channels are difficult to gain traction. The UA-cam algorithms don't always help much either, unfortunately. I'll keep doing it as long as there are people watching. Thanks again! I hope you're enjoying the rest of the channel
I'm very sorry I hadn't seen this comment earlier. (UA-cam's notification feature kind of sucks!) I appreciate your supportive words. I hope you're enjoying the channel.
I have been struggling with writing a Literature Review and your series on Critical Thinking and Argument opened the flood gates to understanding how to cohesively write it. I prayed for relief from this mental block and here goes the answer. Thank you and God bless you Dr. Franco.
I'm so glad you've found this video helpful. Good luck on your studies. Learning is a lifelong process, and I'm glad Snap Language has contributed to the process :D
New basic understanding of questioning the connection between the premises and conclusion gives me better abilities to see the reasoning of arguments, but that only makes it harder to come up with arguments myself.
Thank you for the video. I am studying Critical thinking and I don't know what they are even though I've listened . I'm really worried about this subject. Luckily, I found this video. Your teaching skills makes concept more clearer. Great!!!
Well, thank you for the comment! I do try to make them appropriate to a broad number of people. I also try to create videos that I myself would want to watch (lol), especially considering that reading is a somewhat "unattractive" topic for many people. Thanks for watching and leaving such great feedback! :D
I watched these two videos about analyzing arguments for school. It's a learning topic that I'm not interested in, but you made it fun. I'll subscribe. What else you got? :D
Your videos are so clear and concise. I am really enjoying them, you have made my work so easy and enjoyable. Thank you so much, I will definitely share with the learners I assist.^^
Your videos are really helping me in studying logic at the law department ; university of Sierra Leone. Keep it up I really enjoyed the lessons. It's so educative and informative. God bless you
It is a really big help to me and I love it how you explained it crystal clear and like down to earth and like what it fully means. Keep up the great work!!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you for the video. I enjoyed your down to earth talk, visual aids, and breakdown of the sentence. I can only hope people use these skills more when they read off the Internet. Arigato gosaimasu, muchas gracias... thank you.
I'm watching this since are teacher recommend it, I don't really like this kind of topic, I always sleepy but you made the video less boring, the way you speak, it's very active. Thank you for making it fun to watch!
One of the best videos I have ever seen on analyzing an argument. During the video you gave us 2 examples to practice, can you please provide some more such exercise. Link to practice
Hi! Thanks for your kind words. You gave me a very good idea... I already have this page on my website snaplanguage.io/esl/c-level/reading/ but I'll add more examples there. It may take several days... but I'll let you know when it's available. Thanks for watching and for leaving a *great* suggestion.
Your two-part videos are critically crucial for us to both produce well-constructed arguments with valid premises and to tell weak arguments with insufficient or irrelevant premises from strong ones with sufficient and relevant premises. Actually, that is what we do all our lives, but do not pay attention to it, I mean we have been engaged in convincing others presenting arguments and in most cases end up in failure because of our lousy premises. Now, it totally makes sense how much it is vital to be well-informed before putting forward any arguments with corresponding premises. Thank you enormously for this eye-opening information and stay blessed!
Awesome! I'm glad you got so much out of these videos. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a well thought out comment. I hope you're enjoying the other videos on the channel. -- Cheers!
Sorry I didn't reply to your kind comment earlier! (UA-cam used to be really bad about notifying me of all comments.) Thank you very much for the very nice feedback. I hope you're enjoying the other videos on the channel.
You are very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I have a writing series on the other channel. Although it was designed for people learning English, I have had native speakers watching it and saying it helped them with the writing process. Check it out if you'd like: ua-cam.com/play/PLkSIRscjUnH5edFwCCjsxlu4L3VHwA2EP.html Thanks for supporting the channel
There is no “magic number” as far as how many premises you need. It depends on how complex the conclusion is. In one case, you can have one strong piece of evidence that leads to an unambiguous conclusion; in another, you may need several. Thanks for watching and leaving a question! Cheers! :D
I have to read Critical Thinking paper on my last year and this is really helpful. I have gained a lot of knowledge from you. Thank you so much. Already subscribed. ❤️
I agree... However, in the example paragraph in the video, the main idea was about a safe place to live. Friendly people is a good argument for "a good place to live," not a "safe place to live." Creating an argument can be tricky but, as readers, we need to be on the lookout for inconsistencies like those. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! :D
Sometimes, a video resonates with people even if they don’t hit the like button. Focus on the quality of the comments rather than sheer numbers. Thoughtful comments are valuable feedback.
When you explain something, you simply clarify it or provide causes, reason, relationships, and so on. When you argue something, you must take sides and defend your position. You can have an explanation as part of your argument, but it's there to strengthen your position. Thanks for watching and leaving a question! Cheers :D
I'm not sure I understand the question, though. Is that something people use when teaching writing? If so, the only thing that comes to mind is that (1) you should consider audience you are writing for and (2) you should strive for clarity and depth of thought. If you can be more specific, it may ring a bell.... Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! -- Cheers! :D
Wow! Sorry about that : ( I had to remove them. I tried to see if some of those links had new addresses, but they're simply gone. Thanks for letting me know!
I'm glad it was helpful. It makes my day when I hear that one of my videos was beneficial to someone -- even someone so far away. Love back from the US :D
Hi, helpful play list. Quick question: I've noticed you seem to tend to analyze a paragraph from bottom to top. Is that so, or is the strategy more along the lines of working from a the "last" premise towards the point or conclusion?
Thank you, Veronica! I do sometimes go bottom to top to show people that the main idea (or the main point) of a paragraph could be anywhere. Sometimes writers start a paragraph by laying out the main idea; other times, they use a concluding statement. The important point I hope people are getting in these videos is that you need to look for *patterns of ideas* and work out the meaning from that. The important thing is to identify the topic, figure out what the writer is saying about it (the *main point*), and how the writer lays it out in the paragraph. Thanks for watching and leaving such a great comment! :D

How many premises among those 3 premises in the eckstown Argument have to support the conclusion to say the evidence is sufficient?
There is no “magic number” as far as how many premises you need. It depends on how complex the conclusion is. In one case, you can have one strong piece of evidence that leads to an unambiguous conclusion; in another, you may need several.

@@snaplanguage so you're saying that if the relevancy and Inference, Even if immediate Inference is strong, then sufficiency can be ascertained.

I think is very important of the people are nice and friendly. I think is one of most relevant things to choose a place to leave.

Because the premises support the conclusion

Too many subjective adjectives lack definition (Ex: "many", "vast", "beautiful", "a lot of', Etc.).
Indeed. Subjective adjectives create weak arguments unless they’re supported objectively…
