When the lady drinks from the "invisible" glass of water, we are seeing it from Ted's perspective, and his brain blocks water because of the trauma he had. When we see from another perspective, the glass is there again. She wrote "run" not because he's in danger, but because they let him roam free during the roleplay and as a patient that's the chance he has to escape. Also notice how the shots of Ted and the other patients during the interview always have a guard behind them, Chuck doesn't have one. These are some of the hints the movie gives us all the time that Ted is actually a patient. Brilliant details.

One of the saddest parts of this whole thing is that the head doctor (Ben Kingsley's character) thinks his experiment didn't work, when it in fact did. It's just Leo's character couldn't live with the truth and pretended to regress so that they would lobotomize him and he wouldn't remember the trauma, guilt and pain

yeah but imho he made it pretty clear to Mark Ruffalos character it worked but he just cant live with himself so i suppose he told it to the doctor afterwards

What's crazy is that not only does Leo break down as he learns the truth, but so do we the audience. As the protagonist, we trust that everything he sees and hears is true, but this movie takes that a brilliantly betrays that. I don't think Mark Ruffalo got enough credit for his performance here. He's a truly talented. You guys outta put Zodiac on your list.

I have schizophrenia and although not as severe as Teddy's I also suffer from delusions, paranoia, hallucinations and dissociation. You are absolutely convinced that something is true when it's not, no matter how far fetched or extreme it may be, and no amount of rationale or evidence to the contrary can convince you otherwise. It's absolutely awful.
The key to keeping your symptoms under control is medication, constant therapy and a loving family who support you. Such a fantastic movie.

One of my most favorite movies of all time. I think that's Leo's best role ever, and he wasn't even nominated. It is also very rewarding on a rewatch, you start to see a lot of details and hints Scorsese has put into the movie and start to question how could you miss it for the first time 😂
I highly suuggest you "Dogville", that's a Lars von Trier movie starring Nicole Kidman. Probably the best try to unpack a human nature on screen, also in very unusual but interesting visuals.

Brilliant movie and so happy this is your first Scorcese. The humanity of this film comes through with additional viewings. You really see the role play and the different comfort levels of the staff (remember the laughter and smiles in the interrogation?). The fact that some of the patients were game for the role play is so cool, but they hit breaking points.
This movie is really about the power of the mind to self-deceive, because of pain/grief. And I believe he consciously ends his life at the end because he knows he is a monster, and he can’t trust his mind. So beautiful and humane.

I've been hoping for you two to react to this movie since I knew it would be perfect for analysis, especially how deeply you look at the symbolic / philosophical aspects of movies, BUT this is definitely a movie that takes multiple viewings to really understand. That said, it was really enjoyable listening to your take on it, especially Gabriella's theory on all of it being made up to prevent him from accepting the reality that he set a fire that killed his family. I don't think that's technically the reality of the situation, but it's a great theory. This is definitely something you should watch again and pay attention to both the water and fire. You were onto something about the ash and smoke, but there's really strong symbolism with fire and water, with fire representing the fake reality he created, as every time fire is present he begins hallucinating. Meanwhile, water represents the truth, and he even experiences resistance to the "truth" when he is near water, such as getting seasick, or having migraines, or how the storm is "threatening" to kill them. His wife drowned their children, so water, in this case, is the reality that he rejects. It's also not a continuity error that the patient drank from the cup of water and the cup wasn't actually in her hands. Kudos for catching that, too! It would be cool if sometime in the future you did another watch of Shutter Island for the channel, but less of a "reaction" and more of a commentary/analysis as the scenes unfold, even pausing it to really lay your thoughts out. Might not be a super popular video for the channel, but it would be fun! Especially because it sounds like you have lots more to say about this!
There's a ton more I'd like to respond to but this was such a lengthy reaction, I don't think it's possible to cover everything. So I'll just say your whole back-and-forth was very entertaining and I'm thrilled you guys got to experience this awesome movie and it sparked such an engaging conversation!
Also, to the comments about how Peter denied Jesus three times - check out John 21:15-17. After Jesus' resurrection the disciples sit with Jesus on the beach and Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him, but He specifically asked Peter three times: "Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” I'm certain that there's some scholarly opinions on this that I'm not aware of, but this is just something I personally noticed, although it was not said directly, but Peter denied Jesus three times, and here, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him. To your guys' point about forgiveness and acceptance and ultimately, true love, I think this perfectly exemplifies Jesus letting Peter know that his denial had been forgiven and all that mattered now was to love others. Just some thoughts!

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon.
It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again.
As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”.
No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world.
An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.

That cabin by the pond is in Borderland State Park in Massachusetts. I've been in it many times. My late wife's family helped build it back in the day. In real life it's just an empty shell with a fireplace - just a place for bikers and hikers to get out of the rain. But the filmmakers did a great job dressing it out so it looked like someone actually could live there. Nice location.

Good for reacting to this great film. Your theory that all of it was something he imagined is not something I thought of, it's possible of course but I think the Institution patients and staff, him being a patient playing out a delusional character and how his kids and wife died is real. The fire story of Laeddis doing it is him making it up to forget about the truth and Chuck not being able to get the gun out is just because he's a doctor and not an agent. Also the fire represents him hallucinating while water represented reality.
The best Scorsese films that you should definately react to are Taxi Driver, Casino, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and The Departed.

They're all horror, and they're all the deepest most soul-wrenching and story / twist rich pieces of Art I've ever consumed. And I consumed a lot. Also, although they do have some jump scares sometimes (I'd say an average of one per series, really), those all integrate into the story and server a purpose.
