Me too but my appreciation for hip hop has elevated because of it. The greats mining through all those records, expanding their musical palate to find the right fit for a song. Keeping the original music alive for generations to come!
DJ Scratch, Preemo, Pete Rock are some of the best in my opinion just because they rearranged their work to sound harmonious with the time and era, not flashy but it was elegant just like the older music they sampled from as opposed to making a beat from scratch they molded the beat around the cuts & what they wanted it to sound like. Which is an amazing talent. Many still do it today but it is becoming a lost art. You can’t just sample whatever you want as well you have to clear it with record labels and that costs time and money. Or make your own drum loops which some did do. That’s something these innovators weren’t afraid of doing making the leap to make music the priority which is what it’s all about back then.
Let’s just acknowledge that there’s talent on both sides- the original playing of the acoustic jazz instruments as well as the gift of ears in the ability to hear a flash-snippet of a riff; a momentary snatch of notes and to be able to precision-cut, extract and chop and stretch to make entire songs out of scraps. The origin of hip hop sampling stems from the inner city musicians who simply couldn’t afford to buy such amazing instruments and find others to play with so they all pooled resources and combined turntables with the most minimalist of simple two channel mixers, double copies of the hot singles with the drum n bass breakdowns and TAUGHT THEMSELVES how to spin and rewind the break to extend it indefinitely. Then came the Bronx block parties... The microphone toasting which evolved into full-blown rap verses... And as the b-boys imbibed the breakbeats and transformed them with their bodies whilst the graffiti bombers pieced-out the styles onto brick walls... Thus the “4 ways to rock” coalesced into 4 pillars and Hip Hop was born!
I'm a hip hop beat producer since 2000, but i also studied the theory of harmony and orchestration. I'm shocked how small knowledge about part writing and composition there is in this field. There are, however, excellent sampling artists as well, LoopTroop for example.
Noah Lampson I am but only after listening to the amazing work of Nasty Nas. People complain about hip hop artists sampling their music and I say why? A good number of people that clicked on this video because of Nas. They heard it on NY State of Mind and had to hear the original. I think it's great source of exposure for the artist being sampled. Now they have new fans that probably wouldn't have been exposed to their art otherwise. This is a great song by the way.
Magnificent Original composition. Premo gave new life in State Of Mind. 90 Hip Hop paid homage to old school Jazz, Blues, and R&B. Kids could relate to the samples because they remembered song their parents played. Kids today are TRAPPED into beats. Cool for parties but not for personal listening. Because it gets tired quick.
Here's the scene: The year: 1993. The place: New York City, Manhattan, D&D Studios, the "B" room. In a foggy, dimly lit, smoke filled studio......Nasir Jones aka Nasty Nas, and Chris Martin, aka Dj Premier, are working on a track for Nas' debut album "Illmatic" called "NY State of Mind." They're both puffing mad blunts and going thru Preems record collection to find a killer sample to fill out the drum loop he's already chopped up from the Kool And The Gang record "N.T." Premier knows that he's really gonna have to bring the heat. All of the other Illmatic producers are giving Nas their absolute best tracks. It had turned into something of a friendly competition between them all. Every producer was trying to outdo their peers. Their goal was to stand out on Nas' album and blow the rest of the producers out of the water with their best beats. With names like Pete Rock, L.E.S., Large Professor, and Q-tip, the formidable roster was already legendary. As Preem is flipping thru albums in an old milk crate, the cornucopia of piano keys on the Joe Chambers record "Double Exposure" catches his eye. He thinks to himself "Looks like there could be some raw piano loops on this one, let's check it out." He takes a deep pull from the blunt, passes it off, then carefully loads the record onto his Technic turntable. He presses the large play button, drops the needle, and the album begins to come through the studio monitors and into their ears. Moving the needle around, he and Nas listen to little tidbits here and there. Premier then skips to the 3rd cut on the album.......... Enter the song "Mind Rain." The rapid piano work quickly catches their attention. They let the record run.... Then............shortly into the song..........it happens. A dark, sinister piano loop emerges from the cacophony of sounds @ 1:13. Nas and Preemo IMMEDIATELY look up at each other, lock eyes and begin bobbing their heads. They've just stumbled upon what would become one of the most iconic beats in Hip Hop history, and they both know it. A satisfied grin grows across Nas face. He looks at Premier and nods his head, as if to say "THIS IS IT." Premier smiles and nods in agreement. "This IS it." And on that day...... Hip Hop history was born.
