HONDA TRAIL 125 HUNTER CUB FIRST RIDE! | Initial impressions and Light Offroading Review

  • This is the first ever ride on my 2021 Honda Trail 125, or CT-125 to the non-US market!
    After starting up my Rever app to track the ride (mostly for mileage and top-speed recordings) and heading out of my driveway in Central Florida, I knew exactly where I wanted to go, which was a little water management canal that's hidden behind a community near my house. I had one spot in particular I wanted to check out for future reference, which you'll see in the video. Along the way, I get a feel for the bike on the road, grass, and encounter some light mud while telling you my thoughts of the CT-125 and how it is performing.
    If you'd like to see my other Honda Trail 125 Videos, I have a lot of content so far:

    Hello from Japan 🇯🇵
    The state of stepping on is Neutral.
    So, to do a wheelie on Trail 125, depress the accelerator while you are in gear and then release the gear to make a wheelie.
    (Be careful not to open the accelerator too much.)
    I hope you will give it a try!

    Hi, actually you can smoothen your down shift, and so it will not jerking the rear tire.
    I see when you shift down eg. From 4th to 3rd gear, you immediatley release the gear shifter back.
    When you shift down is 2 step process, you press and release back the shifter,
    To smoothen the down shift in this bike, press the shifter, hold it in half position before you release it, the trans will not engage the down gear before you release it. (Its like in neutral) you can blip the throttle.
    Then release the shifter back slowly while balancing with the throttle. (Like releasing manual car clutch pedal)
    Doing this, you can rev up/play with the throttle of the engine while holding the shifter halfway, to meet the gear speed so it will smoothen the down shift process..
    Cheers

      Thanks for the comment. This was my first ride on the bike and I wasn’t used to the auto clutch yet. Having ridden it for a few months now, I’ve gotten the throttle blip down pretty good. You’ll see in my video coming out tomorrow my technique is a lot smoother

      Haha, yeah it still smells like it’s breaking in and I have doubled the miles since this ride. Next time I’ll go through the water for sure. I’d check out Croom, the biggest issue with Florida trail riding is sugar sand, which I don’t think this bike will do well in based on my couple of trips through it already.

      @brianmccann666 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah i talked to a Honda Dealer in my area. He recommends 150 miles as the break in miles on new 125cc engines. He also said he recommends rides of 3 to 5 hours long as a good break in for endurance testing the new engine.

    Nice little ride. To help the downshift. Slow down a little more and blip the throttle a tad slower and longer and she will downshift smoothly until you get to first and then it want's to jump a little. Took me awhile to train myself. I keep grabbing for the clutch myself. When you need extra power to spin the tires hold the gear shifter up or down according to what gear your in.rev motor drop gearshift and it will spin. There's a video from "retired Oakie living in Thailand" that demonstrates that for a guy. I've had to do that on some of my older hondas with auto sift clutches back in the day. Many days lol..Mini trail 50 ,Ct90 CT70

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 роки тому

      Thanks! I’ve been experimenting with the down shifting since filming this and have applied my “heel-toe downshifting” technique from race cars, which is just a fancy name for rev-matching. It’s hard to do on this bike and this was my first time riding it at speed, also being used to the clutch of the monkey, I was shifting wayyyy too early! It’s so easy to rev match with a manual clutch, I wasn’t remembering I didn’t have one. Suffice to say, I have been perfecting the technique and hope to highlight it in a future video. The next video coming out tomorrow will talk extensively about the semi-auto clutch where I backroad test it

    I don't know how the semi autos are nowadays. But on my older hondas the clutch is engaged as you hold the shift lever up or down. So you could (in theory) pop the clutch to do a wheelie by holding the lever up while you rev the engine and then releasing the shift lever into gear while at high rpm. I don't recommend this ofcourse... lol that's probably hard on the semi auto clutch.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 роки тому +1

      Surprisingly most motorcycles can be shifted without the clutch if you slacken the drivetrain by letting off the throttle for a second. The key is shifting in that sweet spot when the gears don’t have pressure on them. Pretty cool stuff!

      I haven’t had it on many hills yet, but based on what I feel so far, it doesn’t have that tractor-like crawl abilities like an Offroad trail bike (ie: CRF or KLX). The semi-auto clutch seems a bit soft and slippy to me instead of grippy and strong. I feel Honda designed the bike with a very heavy road-going bias to where it “can” go Offroad, if you want

      @@John5XR no insult intended. The okie just talked about how the clutch is part of the shifter, and I had not known that before. And I’d always heard not to push a motor too hard in the first few hundred miles. He talks about heat and cool cycles he does on his bikes, the way he has for decades. I’m not sure what’s best, but I guess I lean towards an easing into high rpms and speed, because I look for longevity in new bikes. I’m really looking forward to eventually owning a trail 125. Things don’t often translate well when typed, thanks for your patience in expanding on your thoughts. Being a racer I tend to push my machines hard from the get go, I’ve had a few engine builders for our Spec Miata racecars advise to “break it in like you want it to be used” and I’ve had a few advise on an easy break-in. Since I’ve done pistons and rings on both my Grom and Monkey (to upgrade, not fix) already, I put a lot of trust into these little 125’s as being pretty stout. Also, the time and cost investment to doing rings is super affordable, so that doesn’t help keep things easy going for me! Another thing is I’ll never put a lot of miles on my bikes because I just took around the house and neighborhood, if I took it easy for 500-miles, that’d take me about 2 years 😳
