- Max Verstappen and his F1 engineer Gianpiero Lambiase have one of the most entertaining relationships over the radio airwaves. But despite the tension we sometimes hear on the TV broadcasts, the way they talk to each other is underpinned by complete trust and respect

GP acted like a dad dealing with his son in a karting ring in that qualifying. He basically said "You think you know better than me?" in the most subtle manner possible.
Subtle?
I hope he won't leave max at a gas station
That exchange after Q2 was hilarious
@@falleny8084Well the fact he's unlikely to do that probably already shows how much of a better father figure he would be for Max than Jos
@@motorsportfanboy7769 Sure bout that? Jos developed one of the best drivers in the world.
Id like to hear Verstappen with Leclercs engineer Xavi😂😂😂😂 Max would go crazy😂😂😂
Maybe will hear "..aa..copy.." at the 1st lap, then eternal silent throughout the race
OMG... that would nuclear!!! Max would lose his mind, come into the pits mid race, take over as engineer, tell Leclerc's current engineer "you're fired, now go get me a REDBULL", get back in the car and drive as his own engineer whilst winning the race by 39 seconds and watching the rest of the pit wall clowns (ON Ferrari's pit wall) run around in circles trying to figure out WTF just happened!!!
The thing i mean is Xavi doesnt really show he has a spine.. so Max will eat this man alive😭😭
He wouldn't be his engineer to begin with
@@superstar_h_gamer5211 i know but its just a "what if" senario😅
Verstappen has literally said that he would quit if GP quit. I think he’s the perfect engineer for someone like Max, and I think Max knows that too.
Let's hope GP quits

Horner: Max we know the car is good please preserve it"
Bono not best when dealing with Hamilton... Every race you hearing Toto override him
@@stixorz To be fair for Bono, Lewis also got so furious whenever Toto or his team override his plan as if he understands aerodynamics, as if he can see the Tyre deg data, or other drivers lap time
Lewis's 2021 Turkish GP complaints and his 2023 complaints about his team doesn't listen to his advice about how to make a fast car" are the most recent perfect example of that

I would like this comment but you're at 666 likes rn
@@swoosh26 I wasn't talking about Toto on my comments.. I am talking about if Bono were Max's race engineer and Horner had to interrupt the radio to shut Max's down..
You know Verstappen REALLY respects GP when Max allows someone to talk like that to him.
Trust, GP was putting max right back in his place and max had nothing to say. Was quite funny watching and listening
And even apologizes for his behavior to GP over the radio. Haven't heard something like before
Max was instilled with respect by both his parents.👌
@@fan-tastic2803. Yeah but it seems that you wouldn’t want to back down to Max; as soon as he determines that you have no spine, he would eat you for breakfast along with his corn flakes.
@@harry4454what are you guys referring to?
It’s like being a babysitter of a really smart kid - GP is like “I’m the adult, do as you’re told” with Max asking “but why?” to everything!

GP's, "This is it. This is it." just before the final lap in Abu Dhabi 2021 still gives me goosebumps.
GP is like a best friend. They can say all sorts of stuff to you that no one else can because you know exactly where it's coming from good or bad because you know each other.
Best race engineer by a mile, he makes the ferrari dons look like amateurs
only one who comes marginally close is Josh Peckett (ocon's). Stroll's old engineer was good aswell

You know when you want to try and defend your team but you know you absolutely can't. This. I jokingly said Carlos was going to start calling his own races, and here we are...

@@best___0999 no not really. The fact that you can hear toto coming through every now and then allready tells you he isnt in control. Bono isnt on the level gp is. Gp can calm max down from the pitwall where as bono just dosnt do much at all on that part.
Best Driver, Best Car, Best Race Engineer.
well Redbull is practically best at everything right now. you can count the pictcrew as the best + Hanna the head strategist + adrian newey the best car designer. they are just so on top of their game right now
Don't discount the fact that Max, like all other drivers, is pumped full of adrenaline & is reacting in the moment.
exactly
The man is an overnight sensation.
Not for those who follow them for long.. even from max early days at Redbull
Overnight? He’s been his engineer since 2016
@@ploppyjr2373he means his popularity exploded overnight because of what he said in the quali mate. Now everyone knows who GP is.
@lolspoolin7366 I'm not sure how you would've not known who he is beforehand but fair enough
@@Ksimracing I mean, I'm sure people did. I'd hope so anyway. You know how these things work though. All that aside, that verbal spanking was just fantastic.
He knows when it's OK to step on Verstappen's toes, he would not fight with him over something he doesn't like.
not really stepping on toes. max knows that everyone can always do better and no-one is perfect, including himself. max says that without that open criticism you would miss out on the little details which make you successful.
engineer gotta be pretty damn good at his job if he can constantly find ways to improve on what max can already do.
GP is as big a factor in Max' wins as his talent, car and upbringing is, GP is hugely important to Max' success.
Absolutely love GP from the very beginning of Max his career. Always keeps his head cool, never talks more than required, motivates if needed. It makes them a great duo.
Like Sebastian Vettel and Guillaume "Rocky" Rocquelin before them.
I was really surprised when Max didn't lash out that GP after he said "I'd ask you to use your head more" during last race.
"use your head" are code words for slow down. That's why Max asked if both (him and Perez) are doing it.
Nothing rude at all there.
It wasn’t rude, it was something they agreed one before the race to lift at eau rouge-radillon so the floor plank doesn’t wear by touching the ground
Max will murder Xavi in broad daylight if he is forced to deal with him on a regular basis 😅
😂😂😂😂😂
Ngl I love their relationship. Like 2 90 year old men who've been friends since school
"Never another senior voice over the radio"

So awesome. I love their dynamic. I liked hearing GP push back at Verstappen to get him what he wanted this past weekend
them both are made for each other haha. I love their teasing, trust and obviously sassy responses 😂
GP is a wizard with words he always knows the right thing to say and he demands respect without making it obvious 👌
Could not have a better combo.
Patience in understanding and respect for the advice and knowledge passed to Max .
Thanks to both his parents fo raising a good kid. Well done!!
this how an engineer should talk to a talkative driver. Gunther also talks a lot more stern over the radio then others and it works wonders.
Imagine Verstappen with Leclerc's engineer 😭😭😂 blood would run on Maranello's streets
GP is Italian!
Look, Max is Dutch. Like the T-shirt I have says:
I'm not arguing, I'm just telling you why I'm right!
I think there's also a bit of Dutch directness in there.
If you beat around the bush or are overcomplicating something to be polite you're not communicating clearly. Especially in high stress situations. So nothing personal, but direct and clear communication. You'll be buddies and have tea by the time you've finished...
Max’s attitude towards total domination, shows he has no interest in leaving
This kind of relation just fits in the RB-phylosophy and GP and Max picked it up at some point that people actually liked it. I bet that Spa was a bit of a pre summerbreak exaggeration.
Well they’ve been together thru ups and downs so the trust is hard to break.
Horner describes them as an "old married couple". They bicker with each other, particularly under stressful circumstances, but don't even try to get between them. Apparently Max always apologises after, especially if he's been in the wrong, and will often do things like bring GP an ice cream as a peace offering lol. He said that Max genuinely trusts GP - like a kid brother and his older one.
The best engineer/driver relationships have often been the same sort of way. They'll play out a little differently, but they'll essentially be the same. It's all built on trust. (You can hear the difference between the best relationships and those currently between the drivers and engineers at Ferrari. There is little to no trust, especially regarding strategy there. It breaks my heart for those lads, they both deserve their own Bonos or GPs.)
The driver has to trust whether his engineer's instructions are a) going to help him get the best out of the race and b) won't get him injured or killed. And the engineer has to trust that the driver will do as he says and not get himself killed. That may seem like an exaggeration, but as it says on the ticket, motorsports are dangerous.
I'm trying to think of another, more inherently dangerous sport than motorsports; anything in which one goes fast and has a machine involved. E.g. speed boats and aeroplane races, and anything similar you can think of, come under this "motorsports" heading. Even gliding and parachuting have engines involved at some point.
I guess that diving and base jumping (or any other way of plummeting to the earth with or without some sort of mechanical assistance) are probably the only more dangerous ones. Horse riding can also be potentially fatal, but that also includes a relationship of trust in both parts.
Thinking along these lines does help one get some idea of how precious a top "couple" is. Heck, Rob Smedley even left Ferrari to go to Williams along with "Felipe Baby"! They were a great couple too lol. IIRC he left F1 when Felipe retired the second time around.
Anyway, all this means is don't read anything negative into Max & GP's relationship. They're no worse together than me and my old man and we've been married very nearly 35 years! Sure, we bicker, but I really mean it when I say "don't even _think_ about coming between us". Not if you want to remain intact. I get the feeling that it's similar with them!
I'd be inclined to simply agree with what others are saying that what was heard on the radio is probably just the usual way they butt heads with no real intention of causing any issues. They've been together since 2016 and pretty sure both sides know how important it is for them to trust each other on and off the track and also know when not to push it anymore.
Max could have easily demanded to go to the pits but ultimately didn't. That's what he did in Austria for fastest lap and GP relented. So both of them they know it more than anyone that there are times when one side gets what they want and the other doesn't and vice versa. That's all part of that driver-race engineer dynamic that not everyone gets what they want.
Yeah, i feel like FOM picked up on the clips from earlier being viewed a lot, so they now pick more of the "bickering" communications to drive engagement that way.
no, Redbull only care about hiding their true pace and preserve the spare parts avoiding grid penalty..
if Max management drive pulled off 24s gap from P2, they would allow Max like in Austria..
@@naufalpahlevi8976max did actually do a lot of management during the race
@@ploppyjr2373 exactly, in Austria he is on his management mode all day long and pulled of 24s gap from a Ferrari P2, they let him to pit
In spa his management mode only create about 17-19s gap from the Redbull in P2 by the time max asked to push and then pit
See the difference? Max asked to push, showing up their true pace, using more engine and spare parts usage more than necessary, risking another grid penalty later on
None of those problems appeared in Austria, when Max didn't need to push at all
@@naufalpahlevi8976 max only pushed just out of the pits, he instantly slowed down when asked to

I don`t judge drivers for what they say during races. The adrenaline and pressure is something none of us knows about.
F1 pilot pumped with adrenaline: W@€#%~!!!
Piastri pumped with adrenaline: Hold my beer
Great that you don’t. Sadly you’re the lonely ship of maturity in this sea of childish toxicity.
Everyone judges the drivers and the worst part they only judge the driver they don’t like but defend their crush when he does the same thing. Obviously ham and ver fans are by far the worst.
I wonder if max and lewis sometimes cringe when they read comments of their fans. I would
The people having a go at Max in this situation. If you've ever had a best friend and didn't have a conversation of that manner, they weren't you're best friend
I legit love GP lol, the dude is like Max’s second dad on the radio sometimes and it’s so funny. They work very well together.
Say what you want about the way Jos raised Max but there's no doubt he responds to stern guidance and unlike most world champions in their prime is not a prima donna. He respects and responds well to being challenged
What are you talking about? 😂 max does not respond to stern guidance, at all. There are numerous examples of that
He doesn’t respond well when challenged either 😂
Lay off the paint thinner dude
You have to fight fire with fire sometimes, and it seems GP knows exactly when to do so with Max. 👍
Fair play to both of them; Max knows he's got a good engineer and he needs to show him respect, and GP knows when to leave Max to get on with it and when to step in.
@@christiansimmons630 I agree, he repond well when challenged either 👍 lay off the gasoline brother lol

GP is a big part of why Verstappen is doing so well. GP knows how to handle Verstappen and they get on well and it keeps him comfortable to focus on performance.
Compare to Leclerc and Xavi where the trust just isn’t there.
When Russell jumped in at Sakhir, you got to see more of just how good Bono was at his job, I’m sure the same would be for GP if he got a new driver in
I thought Russell had a different race engineers
Was his really Bono as well?
The man very rarely made a mistake on a strategy call in years, he's one of the best for sure
He's not making the strategy tho
He doesn’t make the strategy calls lol.
Strategy is done by a woman called Hannah Smith i believe. Race strategy is a different job from race engineer.
@norbertjanssen814 they have a whole team, but she is head of that "department" they make strategy before race and they work with race engineers when there are changes and last lap pit stops 😂 but GP still makes mid race strategy(but not only) calls tho
@@furo_5532 In the podcast from Red Bull with Hannah she said that she makes all the final decisions before and during the races. That's why they put her on the podium in Brazil 2019 when Max won.
As I said, Max is the reason GP has no hair
😂
The best F1 married couple.
TWO CHAMPIONNS TOGETHER!!!
The kind of voice more of us need in our life, and also the kind of voice a lot of people tend to run away from. I had a manager I worked under like this who picked apart everything about me from the way i dressed, to the way I walked and talked. I hated working under him, but looking back he was very influential and his voice is always there every time I find myself slipping.
I wish I had GP in my ear talking me through the tough parts of my day, I could use the stern guidance and talking to’s!
GP's dead calm is the perfect balance to Max's hot temper. You have to consider these drivers run on adrenaline all the time in the car. Tempers can flare up even in the most mild mannered man when you regularly drive at + 200MPH. Max has said if GP retires he quits because he doesn't want to work with anyone else. And besides, Max has been working with GP for close to a decade now and people who have followed his career a lot longer attest that Max has matured and calmed down quite a bit as he's gotten older. GP could handle Max as a hotheaded, impatient teenager, he can handle Max now.
Good point; as the mom of teenagers, I’m proud to see GP Survive Max’ teenaged years! 😅
Max: I'm sorry I railed on you.
GP: I'm getting used to it. 🔥
😅😂
These two are hilarious on the radio.
Rocky and Sebastian Vettel were peak engineer and driver combo
Afterwards they have a drink and laugh together at the drama online
Max once told Olaf Mol from Ziggo Sport that if GP would ever quit or retire, so would max, and vice versa.
Get leclerc's engineer to do verstappen's race. Slow button on, plan H
Pay him BOATLOADS to keep him RB!! He’s WELL worth it!!
imagine Kimi with a ferrari engineer.... oh, we allready experienced that : JUST LET ME DRIVE, I KNOW WHAT IM DOING!
Even Voltaire already wrote about it in _Candide_ in 1759: the Dutch are the *bluntest* people on the planet 🤓 Some consider this rude while others appreciate the honesty 🤷♂️
They are like me and my best friend playing competitive shooter games tbh 😅
After all of this kerfuffle, i would love to see Max and GP just take the piss out of all the comments and use the radio for a skit.
Better than "Max, do you want to box now or tomorrow, question?"
"Ok, NOW can you bring it home within the white lines?"
'Get on with it Max'😂
Max is like a mad bull and GP is the tamer.
Red Bull
It seems like it's a brotherly relationship. They understand each other. The RB has literally been nurturing a kid & helping him mature & grow.
GP understands that Max (and other drivers) go through heightened emotions during a race, and say things they normally wouldn't do when properly concentrating, many drivers have apologised to folk after a race
I love it
Still checking!!
Every racer has spats with their engineer. They just don't have anything bad to say about Max
Christian: "Max and engineer team are like an old married couple" 😉😏
No issues between them. Max has high respect and faith in GP and has previously said, i think in 2022 that GP is the only race engineer he wants to work with so if GP retires, so will he.
Like Ted Kravitz saif " he needs to be like kimi"
"shut up, I know what Im doing"
I love them...im a max fan, and every time they go hot on the radio i laugh until i cry...their hilarious
I love their relationship! 😊
Every win GP has had Max has been there and vice-versa. They're more like older and younger siblings. Then again I guess media need to make stories and stuff up over the month break 🤦♂️😂
When both are able to bicker with each other it's just bros being bros, if it's one sided then that's when you know it's abusive. For example, if a driver complained all the time and the engineer can only say, 'sorry', 'our mistake', etc.
Reminds me of Massa and his engineer back in the day
A perfect winning combo.
This is why Red Bull functions as a team. The best race-engineer, the best senior race strategist in Hannah Schmitz.
In it to win it 👍
Max himself said (in interview with DC) that it's something he wants from his engineer and if his engineer wasn't critical they wouldn't be as successful. Max knows no-one is perfect and that everyone can always do better, including himself. "i should be able to tell you off, and you should be able to tell me off"
GP has a huge role in the success and at the end of the day Max respects him. Its clear.
He is a good racer for Holland ❤
It's not something just done on the spot, a spontaneous argument. The way of their communication is long talked about how It's appropriate to talk to each other over the race. If I am out of line, draw me in. If your calls are questionable, I will draw you in. It's an agreed upon communication method.
GP is awesome 😀
When you are too good that the Boss cannot even dare talk to you 😂
Anyone managing a much younger colleague can understand this. Fortunately Max is exceptionally intelligent. Definitely NOT like a married couple, what a sad marriage (that is heading for divorce but remains good friends OR stays for the money) if it was. GP is like Max senior older brother. Max always said sorry when he’s wrong in the end or bought GP I’ve cream as a peace offering like a smart little brother to a wise senior older brother.
Luckily GP has Hannah Schmitz in the background.... and Max trusts/respects both of them..😊
Imagine Max and Xavi(Leclerc's engineer)
the easiest and quickest answer to get rid of RB and max haters that claim negative things about the radio messages: verstappen said he would quit F1 if GP stopped being his engineer... and verstappen doesnt say shit lightly...
In 2021 all the senior voices were on the radio. Now that they are over a second clear, everything is fine.
Amazing team...
Meanwhile in Ferrari garage both driver and thier chif 😢 i really think someday Sainz will say had enough of you 😅
It's not spiky... Max is Dutch and usually Dutch people are really direct in their communication and expect the same back... that's what's happening. If you're not used to that it might seem confrontational... take note that their communication never leads to an argument because they're both completely clear about their position from the start... it's just a very direct back and forth.
Well explained, thank you. So now F1 producers can stop trying to create a soap opera where there is none.
Dream team
People who think they are bickering are the same people who think the movie Whiplash is about being abused or being in an abusive relationship. Achieving greatness takes an extremely focused version of obsession and insanity that average people view as abuse.
Part of the Redbull team era Verstappen on your resume is a flex
What the speaker calls "tension" is projection or attribution. Starting with a guy with a Dutch father, Max's communication is pure Dutch no beating around the bush directness and Max's mother's Belgian family might find it rude. That Dutch communication is very clear, but when "we" differ of opinion can become passionate. "We" prefer people who disagree, even if they convince us of a different opinion, above people who say we are right and don't care, or think differently, or the worst, act opposite.
It's about honest integrity.
Gianpiero Lambiase with both Italian and British nationality must have learnt to understand cultural (communication) differences and adapted to this. His Mediterranean side already had the passion, so that part was easy.
Ahhh called it intensity 😂💀💀

"Intensity" - not quite the word I'd use.
Max and RB would be smart to go a bit easier to not make the gap so big. Still win but keep it closer. Then FIA wouldn’t feel the need to change part of the regs so close up the field as they usually do. Gotta do it smart tho.
