Lots wrong with the Amazon dub. You can tell these were all recorded in a rush and they work with an almost entirely literal script unless the timing becomes an issue. The recordings seem to've been done remotely with a lot of the VA's sitting down while recording, which throws off their tone and cadence; they're much less physical performances. They also seem to be single takes due to the amount they had to cover and were trying to get it done in as few sessions as possible, which creates dispassionate performances no matter how passionate the actor is (even Tiffany Grant is under-served by this!). The direction is also an issue along with the script and pacing; I feel like the actors didn't have access to the actual footage available to them for reference, which is an old anime dubbing issue and is by no means professional standard for the industry today. The recording quality also suffers from what I'm almost certain is remote recording, combined with almost no attempt to mix the dialogue with the preexisting soundscape, making the dialogue tracks way too prominent in the mix; again a tragic case of a rushed production. The worst, however, is that there are multiple issues with the actual editing of the audio that have gone entirely unfixed, proving that nobody watched these from start to finish to quality check it over in earnest. In 3.0+1.0, there are occassions of characters' mouthflaps being woefully mis-timed and even issues where they'll play two recordings of the same line back to back because the editor didn't assemble them on the timeline properly/selected the wrong take files. Just brutal stuff. These actors deserve better, as does Evangelion in general. This isn't something you just half-ass. My greatest hope is that Funimation secures the rights for physical distribution of 3.0+1.0 and can complete the saga with the cast they originally assembled.
So they brought back the original dub cast to redub the first three movies? And they also did 3.0 + 1.0? How come there hasn't been any official news about this?

Putting aside that Funimation's dialogue is just a lot more natural, Allison just sounds too old to do the voice now. I can see it working in the 3rd and 4th movies, though, what with there being a 14 year time skip.

I didn’t watch the new dub for 1.0,2.0 or 3.0 but just watching this clip it sounds a lot more awkward compared to the funimation dub which sounds more natural. I think it has to do with a few factors, these voice actors are getting old, the translation is way to literal and the director is doing a bad job at directing the voice actors. However, the dub for 3.0+1.0 was actually pretty good and didn’t have the same awkwardness of the new dubs for the previous movies for some reason.
The dub for 3.0 + 1.0 works because for one, we have nothing to compare it too, and 2, it’s a brand new movie which means the actors can breathe new life into their respective roles instead of repeating similar dialogues for films they already did in the past.
100% accuracy is not the be all and end all of a dub. You need to actually adapt the script so it sounds right in another language, because otherwise you get the Evangelion Amazon Prime dub, where any and all emotion is mangled by overly wordy, awkward and stilted dialogue that reads like an amateur high school essay rather than something human beings would actually say.
That is insane how bad the Amazon dub version is! I honestly now attribute the Funimation dubbing to how much I love Misato! I am not too sure I would have been so head over heels if she sounded like an 80 year old chain smoker this whole time.
It's almost like this dub was purposely made to gaslight new fans on how bad the original dub sounds compared to the Netflix one which is far from the truth
Funimation's dialogue flows better, but other than that it's basically the same. If we have to put up with an awkward script at least we have the familiar voices to get us through it.
Man I wish Funimation didn’t loose their minds and they probably would have gotten 3.0+1.01 because I watched the film today and while I was glad they brought the original cast back some voices were really bad.

The biggest pro for the Amazon dub is also one of its faults: because the script is SO faithful, it doesn't sound very natural a lot of the time. A less faithful script can sometimes lead to stronger performances if the dialogue is good. Also, the voice direction isn't nearly as strong.

You can tell just by the audio quality of the dialogue between Allison and Spike in this scene. It definitely sounds like Allison had a slightly hard time getting into the 1.11/2.22 Misato voice. It still is without a doubt Misato, just sounds a touch older. I don't have an issue with it, but it's noticable. (To be fair, she sounded older in the Funi dubs than she did in the ADV dubs, so this already happened before.) I don't think this dub is bad, far from it, they've seemed to have gone down the Second 3.33 dub route of mixing natural dialogue with awkward stuff. It's interesting.
The VAs not doing their character's for awhile isn't the issue, I mean ffs the evangelion movies have had very long lapses between them and it hasn't affected the quality of their performances before. When a dub sounds bad, it usually means bad script, bad voice director, or both.

Funimation is way better, The Dialogue is way more natural sounding and flows a lot better. The Amazon Dub is terrible, An Overliteral Translation is never a good thing and the performances were Way off.
Maybe they couldn't work out licensing Funimation's dubs for Amazon's streaming services so they redid it themselves, or maybe they wanted the production and cast to be consistent with 3.0+1.0.

I thought something seemed off when I started the Amazon version. I had no idea they redubbed the movies. Guess I'll have to pop in my Blu-Ray copy of 1.11. Hopefully the other movies aren't as awkward as I only have the Blu-Ray for 1.11 and not the other two that apparently got a new dub. Also it's weird going back to the old voices after watching the Netflix dub.

You can tell the cast has significantly aged between Dubs. Especially Allison Keith. I still prefer the Funimation version. Better written and better acted. Still super happy they came back for 3.0+1.0 though.
Honestly, they should have just kept the Funi dubs for 1.0 - 3.0 and only dubbed the new film. These re-dubs are sooo bad. Also re-casting Trina Nishimura as Mari was a huge mistake.

I do think Trina was the perfect va for Mari's dub voice because she had a lot of emotion coming from her especially her fight with zuruel in 2.0. They probably couldn't have kept same funi dubs from the first 3 films due to licensing just like how netflix had to redub neon genesis. But I do agree the redubs for these movies just felt so off even though they brought back most of the same voice actors. Can't tell if it's bad direction, the different dialogue or something else entirely.

She absolutely crushed it in those original rebuild dubs and while her new VA was okay, her performance PALED in comparison when it came to nailing Mari's crazy energy. And yeah, I think its a combo of "some of these VAs having to return after a decade+ give or take," a super hardline script that couldn't budge, and having a worse director for the material who couldn't manage to work past those hurdles (esp compared to Mike McFarland who's directed a bunch of fantastic dubs)

Because it was done in house by Studio Khara because they wanted complete control over the script so it's faithful to a fault. Same script writer as the Netflix dub of the series.

Ever notice how in the Amazon dub everybody yells with their inside voice? I know they probably recorded from home due to the pandemic, but that didn't stop the Attack on Titan or My Hero Academia dubs from making the characters really project when the moment called for it. The Amazon dub isn't bad, but it's just directed so...blah.

This is just a very simple take, some people might disagree: Misato: You know, you can ask me questions. You must have a lot. Shinji: Uh... Okay. Misato: Hey, I'm the only one that's currently talking. So come on, say something. Shinji: Uh... Yeah. I'm sorry. Misato: I didn't mean it that way, Shinji. It's just that, you must have a lot of questions. Like what was that big monster? Or why did I send that invitation? You must be curious. Shinji: I am... It's just, I assumed you wouldn't give me an answer, even if I asked. Misato: Really? You must think about this a lot, especially for someone your age. You should be more carefree. Shinji: Sorry, ma'am... It's just that, I'm only trying to follow my teacher's advice. Misato: Alright, well. That mysterious creature that we saw back there is called an Angel. Writing this out made me realise that Shinji's lines are actually quite good, and flow naturally for the most part, the only one I felt that needed rewording was his last line, about his teacher. Misato had quite a few that I felt needed a rewording to flow better in English. This was actually quite fun, I should do it for the Elevator Scene video as well lol.
I was able to withstand 6:22 seconds of the Amazon series before I had to turn it off, to save myself. The only people who can like this are people who don't know any better.
The first time watching this on Amazon shinji sounded like Tobey maguire but way wimpy but I got used to the voice progressing through but oh my god was he annoying Like I literally groaned every time he talked😂🤦🏾😒

Apparently Amazon was able to get either all of or every single one of the original adv VAs for the dub (I’ve only watched the Netflix dub and a few clips of the adv one) so that’s why misato sounds like a smoker
The Prime dubs for Rebuilds 1-3 were so phoned-in compared to FUNi’s, which makes sense since they were recorded together in a rush, with lots of remote recording. FUNi was able to put far more effort in, and it shows. For some reason, the Prime redubs do get slightly better as they go along, but I don’t see the problem in just watching FUNi’s dubs and switching to Prime for only the 4th film (which did have more time and effort put in). Most of the key actors are unchanged anyway.
Problem is, anyone trying to watch the films normally, on official streaming services, won't have that option. The FUNimation dubs aren't on anything anymore and their home video releases are out of print. Hell, even some pirate sites have probably replaced the old dub with this new one (like I've seen some do with the TV series dubs). It sucks because, for a lot of people, THIS will be their introduction to the ADV/Manga cast. New viewers and folks out of the know are gonna assume this is their A-game and that they just aren't good actors.
What's the difference between the FUNimation dub and the Amazon Prime, but with Spike Spencer and Alison Keith-Shipp doing two different dubs in this clip, other than the scripts?
Thanks for this. I never finished the 90s anime, so these movies are my attempt to finally experience this amazing story now that all of the movies are out. I just finished the Amazon version of 1.11, not knowing there were different dubs, and it was weird and awkward. The Funimation clips here are much better, so now I guess I'll try to find the next two movies with that cast, at the very least. I'm not surprised streaming services are having a pissing match, but that doesn't make the end results any better for such a seminal series.

Allison Keith's voice is like fine wine: gets better with age. Only thing I didn't like about 3.0+1.0's dub, was the battle noises were still in Japanese.

Oh Hell no, I disagree. Look, I like her performance as Misato in the Original Series Dub and in the FUNi dubs for the first 3 rebuild movies. But in the Amazon Dub, Her age is starting to catch up to her. Her voice is so raspy, She sounds like she needs a glass of Water.

@Acerthorn The True Acerthorn script sounds fine, it's how Allison sounds herself. She's a great voice actor, and does pretty good in NGE. but shines even more in the Funi 1.0 and 2.0 dubs. At the time of the Amazon redubs, it had been a decade since those dubs, so Allison got older. It's clear to hear that in her performance in Amazon 1.0 because she can hardly do the voice anymore.

It feels like they're working off of a very literal script with how formal the dialogue is in Jeffery's version.

You can tell the cast has significantly aged between Dubs. Especially Allison Keith. I still prefer the Funimation version. Better written and better acted.
Still super happy they came back for 3.0+1.0 though.
Also, the direction for Amazon's was rushed, plus the script was not that great for them either.

Coming straight from watching the show in the Netflix dub where Misato's voice is so soothing this really threw me off.
Honestly, they should have just kept the Funi dubs for 1.0 - 3.0 and only dubbed the new film. These re-dubs are sooo bad.
Also re-casting Trina Nishimura as Mari was a huge mistake.
But they didn't recast her for 3.0+1.01? Or are you saying replacing Trina was a mistake? I do think Trina was the perfect va for Mari's dub voice because she had a lot of emotion coming from her especially her fight with zuruel in 2.0. They probably couldn't have kept same funi dubs from the first 3 films due to licensing just like how netflix had to redub neon genesis. But I do agree the redubs for these movies just felt so off even though they brought back most of the same voice actors. Can't tell if it's bad direction, the different dialogue or something else entirely.
@@AsianBoiWatchesAnime Oh yeah, I'm agreeing & saying replacing Trina was a mistake (whether they're hands were tied or not)! She absolutely crushed it in those original rebuild dubs and while her new VA was okay, her performance PALED in comparison when it came to nailing Mari's crazy energy.
And yeah, I think its a combo of "some of these VAs having to return after a decade+ give or take," a super hardline script that couldn't budge, and having a worse director for the material who couldn't manage to work past those hurdles (esp compared to Mike McFarland who's directed a bunch of fantastic dubs)
Okay to be clear this is not a bad dub I’ve seen so many that are actually bad like any dub by Animax Asia, Himouto Umaru-Chan dub, Deadman Wonderland, and Another (this one is not bad just meh)
@@Meap-nv4rv Oh yeah its nowhere near the levels of like, Animax dubs or AICO - but still notably worse off and probably some of my least favorite mainstream dubs I've heard this year.

Because it was done in house by Studio Khara because they wanted complete control over the script so it's faithful to a fault. Same script writer as the Netflix dub of the series.

@@TheIntratec9 you guys should look up the commentary tracks for nge, you hear Matt Greenfield explaining how they basically had to argue constantly about translation and sometimes just ignored them(gainax) because things like "3rd children" sounded unnatural. Yes. The 90s dub was asked to use the "Children" style translation you see on Netflix.

Ever notice how in the Amazon dub everybody yells with their inside voice? I know they probably recorded from home due to the pandemic, but that didn't stop the Attack on Titan or My Hero Academia dubs from making the characters really project when the moment called for it. The Amazon dub isn't bad, but it's just directed so...blah.

Alright, let's see if I can rewrite the Amazon dialogue to flow better while still being accurate. This is just a very simple take, some people might disagree:
Misato: You know, you can ask me questions. You must have a lot.
Shinji: Uh... Okay.
Misato: Hey, I'm the only one that's currently talking. So come on, say something.
Shinji: Uh... Yeah. I'm sorry.
Misato: I didn't mean it that way, Shinji. It's just that, you must have a lot of questions. Like what was that big monster? Or why did I send that invitation? You must be curious.
Shinji: I am... It's just, I assumed you wouldn't give me an answer, even if I asked.
Misato: Really? You must think about this a lot, especially for someone your age. You should be more carefree.
Shinji: Sorry, ma'am... It's just that, I'm only trying to follow my teacher's advice.
Misato: Alright, well. That mysterious creature that we saw back there is called an Angel.
Writing this out made me realise that Shinji's lines are actually quite good, and flow naturally for the most part, the only one I felt that needed rewording was his last line, about his teacher. Misato had quite a few that I felt needed a rewording to flow better in English. This was actually quite fun, I should do it for the Elevator Scene video as well lol.
I was able to withstand 6:22 seconds of the Amazon series before I had to turn it off, to save myself. The only people who can like this are people who don't know any better.

Apparently Amazon was able to get either all of or every single one of the original adv VAs for the dub (I’ve only watched the Netflix dub and a few clips of the adv one) so that’s why misato sounds like a smoker
The Prime dubs for Rebuilds 1-3 were so phoned-in compared to FUNi’s, which makes sense since they were recorded together in a rush, with lots of remote recording. FUNi was able to put far more effort in, and it shows. For some reason, the Prime redubs do get slightly better as they go along, but I don’t see the problem in just watching FUNi’s dubs and switching to Prime for only the 4th film (which did have more time and effort put in). Most of the key actors are unchanged anyway.
Problem is, anyone trying to watch the films normally, on official streaming services, won't have that option. The FUNimation dubs aren't on anything anymore and their home video releases are out of print. Hell, even some pirate sites have probably replaced the old dub with this new one (like I've seen some do with the TV series dubs). It sucks because, for a lot of people, THIS will be their introduction to the ADV/Manga cast. New viewers and folks out of the know are gonna assume this is their A-game and that they just aren't good actors.

The FUNimation dub having better acting and some of the voice actors from the ADV EVA dub were replaced by FUNimation voice actors.
Thanks for this. I never finished the 90s anime, so these movies are my attempt to finally experience this amazing story now that all of the movies are out. I just finished the Amazon version of 1.11, not knowing there were different dubs, and it was weird and awkward. The Funimation clips here are much better, so now I guess I'll try to find the next two movies with that cast, at the very least.
I'm not surprised streaming services are having a pissing match, but that doesn't make the end results any better for such a seminal series.
The movies go way off the origanal story. The first one is basically the same ad the show, but after that it goes way off track.

Allison Keith's voice is like fine wine: gets better with age. Only thing I didn't like about 3.0+1.0's dub, was the battle noises were still in Japanese.

Oh Hell no, I disagree. Look, I like her performance as Misato in the Original Series Dub and in the FUNi dubs for the first 3 rebuild movies. But in the Amazon Dub, Her age is starting to catch up to her. Her voice is so raspy, She sounds like she needs a glass of Water.
Already not really liking the amazon version, giving me netflix vibes from the wording. Still gonna watch all of them for comparison, so glad i hunted down the blu rays earlier this year

@Acerthorn The True Acerthorn script sounds fine, it's how Allison sounds herself. She's a great voice actor, and does pretty good in NGE. but shines even more in the Funi 1.0 and 2.0 dubs. At the time of the Amazon redubs, it had been a decade since those dubs, so Allison got older. It's clear to hear that in her performance in Amazon 1.0 because she can hardly do the voice anymore.
I prefer the Amazon dub where the actress goes back to her original voice for Misato. That's how the character should sound.
