Paul Ferris is a Scottish author and former organised crime figure. Ferris was an enforcer for Glasgow 'Godfather' Arthur Thompson in the early 1980s. Known for his ruthlessness and extreme violence, he rose to a prominent position in the city's criminal underworld.
He served a prison sentence for weapons possession in 1984 and believed he had been betrayed by the Thompsons. In 1991 Thompson's son, Arthur Jr, was shot dead. Ferris was charged with his murder and subsequently found not guilty after what was the longest criminal trial in Scottish history at that time. He was imprisoned again from 1998 to 2002 for trading in firearms and possessing explosives.

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview with Paul and yourself James.
I came from Zena Street in Barmulloch and went to St Philomena's school at the same time as Paul, then on to All Saint's school.
I experienced some of what Paul talks about with certain brothers, so I can empathise with Paul in that respect.
    All the best.

He’s a great listener, he behaves like a counsellor to the point it makes me think he’s studied counselling skill classes because he uses all active listening techniques counselors use - paraphrases, reflects, clarifies, summarises, sharing, positive encouragers etc. He’s a natural. @@adriantroy9294a few fancy words there 😂 but makes you wonder, like the bullying over time lit a fire in paul that he might not have ever been able to get access to without the torment.
That it basically took paul from being a reserved , good lad into a very vengeful person towards people who were bad to him.
But then who knows how things could have developed. Gang and knife culture is mega in Glasgow and paul may have still went down that route of criminality even if the bullies did not exist, however that resilient character might not have been as prominent.
They school years are crucial for your character building ( as you know).
A think as paul says he became fear resistant. Once he knew the damage was a kicking or punched a few times and that your not made of glass it certainly changes the way you feel , the fear you have dissappear's and a toughened version of yourself emerges.
As paul says on a tv documentary scalping one of his bullies was nothing more than a self satisfaction.
Really good listen tho. A do like Paul's take on allot of things.

I met ferris a a few years ago, about the time his film was being made.
He spoke in a soft manner and was very polite. He never acted hard or moved about as to say "Im a Gangster" If you did not know his history you would never know what he once was, unless you looked into eyes, they told a story of their own. He was severely bullied as a child which explains how he became so relentless. Their was nothing false about him I respected him for that.

Thank you to Paul Ferris and James English for this fascinating long interview.
I'm a big fan of James English's podcasts and interviews, great style. Paul Ferris looks like a really decent bloke you would like to have a pint with down the pub. It's hard to picture him in his previous life doing violent crimes. I bet he can tell some really great stories. There's enough material here for a sequel to his autobiographical film Wee Man which only scratches the surface of his life really and gives an overview. Any plans for a second film I wonder?
My own life has parallels to Paul's. Like him I was bullied a lot at school. My Grandfather was my father figure and role model growing up ex-army Corporal and no-nonsense hard man. He showed me how to stand up for myself and encouraged me to learn how to fight and stand up to bullies. I studied martial arts, Karate and Kung-Fu and became fearless. Eventually I gained a reputation for being a local hooligan and trouble-maker. I was involved with gangs, getting in trouble at school skipping classes and had zero fear of or respect for authority. When you give in to that dark side it can lead you to some very dark places. I remember my first time in the nick sitting in a cell before Court and thinking this isn't the life for me it was a wake up call.
I turned my life around though by my 30's and then went to university later in life and so avoided going into a life of crime. I chose the opposite path and worked in the legal profession which gave me an appreciation of the legal system and how working within the law instead of against it can be very empowering and rewarding. I'm semi-retired now and glad I chose the path I did instead of crime, which rarely pays or comes to any good for you or anyone around you. Paul Ferris is one the exceptions for someone with his high-profile and criminal background. Much respect to him to turning his life around and bringing his son up the right way.

OUT of all heavy crime gangsters, Paul Ferris is my absolute favourite he never grassed on so it turned out people heavier at that period of time, (Arthur Thompson)so as an ex offender myself,Paul gets my absolute RESPECT.I was Lucky enough to have had a chat on Twitter with him which meant a lot to me,the geezer is Awesome and a wise choice of guest on your channel.

Your granda was wrong - the politicians are bought and paid for by the real crooks, always at a local council level. Why you think Paul Ferris had a Twitter war of words with Tommy Robinson? Cos Tommy was going after the bought politicians position. Local councillors give money to these crooks to start “community” centres etc, council contracts for rubbish collection, building contracts etc etc etc.

what a fantastic interview. I was born in Govan, in 1970, and i remember all this happening at the time, it was the reason i wouldn't go north of Toonheed or East of the Barras. What you should do, is watch this with the subtitles, they are auto generated, and it cannot handle a Glesga accent, it's an absolute riot. The subs have absolutely no fuckin' relevance to what's being said.
