    Would you ever keep a "Rude Reptile"?

    • @wordbearer0815
      @wordbearer0815 2 роки тому +9

      Yes. If they look good, stay small, aren't too venomous, display interesting behavior and can be kept in naturalistic terrariums.
      Tree boas in particular are among my dream snakes. Keeping them with bromeliads, scindapsus/other araceans, moss, passion flowers, etc. can be quite a look.

      Already have kept Tokay geckos, Rock Pythons and Bloods Pythons, looking to get into Scrubs, but not Nile Monitors. Rock Pythons are big, but not as nasty, when captive-bred, as people seem to think.
      I love rock pythons, and burms, I'd love to get some pure dwarf Proschai dwarf burmese pythons. I've found them to be hard to come by.

    I purchased a (supposedly) captive-bred blood python "on clearance" from a local pet store about a year ago. The poor guy had been there for over 9 months, probably because of the reputation these snakes have. Erik is definitely the "sassiest" of my snakes, but once out of his enclosure he's really great to handle. He's the only one of my snakes who likes "chin scratches," he tolerates "snoot boops," and I've removed stuck shed from his head and eyes without any drama. He'll sit in my lap like an adult golden retriever, and unlike my ball python and corn snake, he seems pretty fearless. In his tank he's a bit more defensive, and he has a fantastically powerful strike for such a young animal. He's gotten me three times with that strike, though he's never wrapped or even held on. It'd be hard for me to choose between him and my jungle carpet python for "favorite snake."

      @@guppy719 to an extent, breeders tend to pick tamer individuals even if They don't realize they are, but a much bigger factor is just the fact that in the wild less defensive individuals usually die without reproducing at all.

      @@guppy719 behavioral traits like defensiveness actually need to be selected for actively in order for them to be maintained. This makes me wonder if you could, theoretically, breed a venomous snake like a King Cobra to where it's puppy dog tame. Not that I'd want a King Sobra, even if it was puppy dog tame, but as a hypothetical, I wonder if it's possible. Same with crocodillians, I wonder if crocodilians could be bred to be tame. If so, I wonder if Joseph Carter the Mink Man would get one to help him hunt things like muskrats. :D

I have a friend in Louisiana that has an alligator snapper and it seems much more lazy than it is openly aggressive. I love my blood python, who was a "clearance snake" from a pet store. Care is very easy, except for some humidity and shedding issues. He's a great snake to handle, and really calms down once I get him out of his tank. I will admit to chickening out and using a snake hook to help remove him from his enclosure a few times. They are powerful animals, and probably one of the worst "display snakes" due to their lifestyle (very sedentary ambush predators that often remain hidden for days at a time). Still, he's one of my favorite snakes, and I'm also considering getting a Sumatran STP some day.

    I had an ornate Nile once that was quite docile after once we got over out initial disagreements when he was a hatchling. My reptile club had a spot in our county fair petting zoo every year to educate and familiarize people with reptiles. Shelly was so acclimated to people that there was never a problem with allowing even small children to pet him. Some of which he might have out-weighed.
    That said, now 20 years later, he'd left me two two permanent scars. One on my leg from the dorsal edge of his tail sawing me as I picked him up. And another on my wrist from his claws while adjusting his grip while holding him. A reminder for me of the brute strength these animals have.

    I had tokay geckos many years ago. Their attitude was horrible, but that is part of their charm. As long as fingers are kept at a safe distance from those snapping jaws, they are entertaining animals. There is an advantage to their eagerness to bite - it makes them easy to feed. I used to do this all the time - the gecko got angry, barked, and opened its mouth wide; then, I put some food in its mouth. The gecko would predictably bite down hard, realize that it had food rather than a finger, and happily swallow it.

I learned everything you talked about working in pet stores or zoos-the hard way. Great job! Now, what would I add? Hmmm… at one zoo, there was a black-tailed cribo that would nail me (and all the other keepers) routinely. One curator taught me something to bide me time- grab it quickly but gently and act like a tree. That would get you a few seconds to get it off exhibit and in the can for soaking, cleaning, weighing or some other reason. That was a big, strong, confident snake. I see pop up in private collections from time to time. Thanks!

    I adore my Borneo short tail, I've had him almost 2 years he's super sweet. He can be a little huffy but has never once bit me. I think one of the main reasons people think they're rude because they don't know how to handle them correctly. They're terrestrial and we're essentially just meat trees. Not a place a short tail would want to be. So it's important to support their whole body otherwise they get very nervous which is understandable

    I agree! But I have been successful taming on my Amazon Tree Boa, I done a road trip and I had to take my animals with me, and I decided to keep my amazon tree boa in my lap thru the trip, after we reached our destination I took her out and she was super calm and handleable like surprisingly wasn't stress or defensive like she usually was when I tried to tame her before and she been calm ever since and I'm going to continue working with her!

    I had a savannah monitor i got as a baby, like only a few weeks old. I handled him all day almost every day. He bit maybe 3 or 4 times, as a baby. After about a month he never bit me again. I always hand fed him to teach him what was food and what wasnt. As a fuul grown adult i seriously could feed him scrambled eggs with my fingers, even small pieces, and he was so gentle not to bit me. I had him for about 8 years and never had a problem. I lost him because i wound up homeless, but i did sell him to a breeder, and he was amazed at how chill my monitor was. It just takes time and patience.

      That's so strange to me. I live where rosey boas are native, and had a wild caught one for years. I picked her up literally off the ground in my front yard, and she was calm and very handlable from day one. She didn't even try to bite when I caught her (granted, she was a little chilly and had probably just come out of brumating since it was early spring, so she was pretty slow at that moment). The only trouble I had with her ever was getting her to transition from live food to pre-killed; it took the whole first summer to get her to understand a thawed mouse was food too. She was one of the chillest snakes I've ever owned.
      I guess it must depend a lot on individual snake personality though. I used to breed corns, and noticed a big range in temperaments between individuals, and have observed a range in different friends' pythons, so maybe you just got really unlucky (or I got very lucky with my rosy).

      @@cristiaolson7327 they are native to where I am too in Arizona. My boy was captive bred. He was just a spicy noodle I guess. If you watched the video by snake discovery where they are testing out ways to get a snake to release when it bites and holds on not just a tag, their rosy boa is also very spicy.

    That’s the cutest puppy for sure 👍 definitely great top five video and thankfully got to work with all of them and got bit by couple of them and also seen tame versions of all them. And luckily didn’t get bit by my rock pythons but a friend took a bite to the face from a 7ft one definitely scared him from big snakes. But after breeding for few generations they definitely do tame down over generations

    noooooo Wicken!! blood pythons are amazing animals. bad rep comes from the wild caught imports of course like all reptiles at one point. there’s a well established CBB population for at least a decade now. get one for yourself. there is no better pet snake in the world. they are unlike every other snake and have deep personality and bonding. grab one from Richard Crowley, he is an amazing figure in the blood python community and has written one of the only books on short tails

    I have a cbb Tokay which I acquired this past September - no hatch date but presumably a few months - weighed 10g then and is 24g as of two weeks ago. The first three weeks he was squirrely but has steadily improved to the point where he jumps out of the enclosure onto me, explores a bit on my shoulders and back, and then hunkers down in a warm spot in my shirt for as long as I let him, several hours being the longest. My daughter says he is a mamas boy but I think I am just a tree to him lol. Love this little guy, eventually to be a big guy I guess lol. Note that this has taken quite a commitment of time each and every evening to reach this point … it’s like having another dog lol.

    I rescued my Amazon Tree Boa from a really bad living situation. Because she was so sick and needed a lot of care, I had to handle her a lot in the first few months for hydration baths, mite treatments, antibiotics, etc. She started off super defensive and spicy, and I had to use a hook every time. Now though, she absolutely adores me. She'll choose to come out of her enclosure to me, and I can pull her out of her enclosure for cleaning or other things with my bare hands. She might be my favorite snake. She's super happy to just use me as a tree and hang out on me as I go about my business. I know that's not the normal experience with this snake, but it's absolutely possibly to gain their trust and reduce the defensive behavior.

    • @kiaherman2167
      @kiaherman2167 2 роки тому

      I also have to say, I really enjoyed the challenge of handling her when she was super spicy. I only got bitten once, and it wasn't that bad. I've had way worse from cats. The give and take of having to be super aware of her, and respect her while still doing what I needed to do without getting bitten was exciting and it felt really good when I became skilled at it.

  • @cameronbower9199
    @cameronbower9199 2 роки тому

    I have a Sumatran short tail python (Python curtus) and she has made a wonderful pet in the past 5 months I've had her. She tolerates handling very well with hooks or just hands if she's not too defensive. The only potential flaw (I say potential since it doesn't bother me) I have noticed is she is very food motivated. So much so that I can't put my hands in her enclosure without her stalking and locking on to my hands heat. But once she knows she's not getting a rat she is a sweetheart.
