    Here's a hot take: I like that reptile prices are going up (within reason).
    Obviously I'm not talking like down payment on a house-level expensive.
    I just think that having to invest a couple hundred dollars usually means that people will be more invested in the animal and taking good care of it.
    None of the "I was in petsmart and saw something cute for $30 so I just bought it." But people buying these animals with knowing intent.

      Absolutely. The only caveat to that being that it might increase collection from the wild (legal or not) and that is bad.

      @@aina3387 that's a very fair point. Hopefully, though, if people are learning about these animals through reptile youtubers, they're also picking up on the push to not get wild-caught

      I honestly like that too that they have value and don't just become throw away pets because then if someone really, really wants one they will plan and do research and specially as many reptiles live longer than many small mammals as example. So people don't just see a snake and buy without knowing anything about them. Of course they should not cost like a house unless it's maybe some rare animals, though thinking about it actually I don't think people should be able to sell very rare animals (who risk extinction in the nature) because that risks leading to bad people stealing them from their natural habitats (further thriving the extinction) and selling to rich people who just want a cool pet to show off, I'm definitely not a fan of the exotic reptile trade.

      i agree its good when the animal is not too cheap, but pet store prices will always be cheaper than quality animals.

      @@aina3387 - some laws do the same thing. I live in VA and Spotted Turtles, for example are banned. I get it. But they also banned captive bred (that have a tangible paper trail). Recent, they’ve implemented a ban on all native reptiles and amphibians with the exception being one single specimen. I’m cool with that but they’ve also banned captive bred of all native species-to me, this completely encourages the practice of wild collecting.

    To be honest,
    the animal itself being expensive is kinda a good thing since it kinda prevents them from spontaniously being bought by people that loose interest in a week or so, and stop caring for it.
    Look at hamsters. You get em super cheap and most end up in crappy soon dirty enclosures.

    Hi Adam, generally when newly hatched or born offspring eat the faeces of their mother it is to enable them to acquire the gut flora they need to be able to digest the food that they eat. This is very prevalent in reptiles that are plant eaters. This is also the case with the Koala here in Australia. The first solid food a baby has when getting close to being weaned is some of the mothers faeces. This contains the bacteria that are needed for the baby to be able to digest gum(eucalyptus) leaves

      @@highjinx6519 No I just remember when it happened, lol. TLDR around 2006 a leucistic boa was discovered in Brazil and was named Princess Diamond. A very popular and well-respected boa breeder at the time tried to buy her but Brazil refused. So the breeder went to Brazil, stole her from the zoo where she was staying, and smuggled her back into the US. They claimed she died but produced a single litter of leucistic offspring, which were returned to Brazil in 2015. But now you can buy Princess/Emperor Diamonds (the fact that they changed the name for the boys to protect their masculinity never ceases to amuse me) really easily so who knows if she actually died, or if any of her first litter were secretly kept instead of repatriated.

    Back in 2004 we paid $125 for our Dumerils - a pretty typical price.
    Even with somewhat expensive animals the life cycle costs - exclosure, feeding, heating/lights, vet bills - exceed the purchase price.

    I'm surprised Super Dwarf Retics didn't make the list. I think youtube completely changed and increased the general publics awareness of the species.
    Also, Antaresia are way cooler than Ball Pythons 😋

    • @TheScienceguy77
      @TheScienceguy77 2 роки тому

      YT definitely changed the public awareness of Super Dwarves, but they're not something the average reptile enthusiast is likely to afford to buy or keep so the awareness hasn't entirely translated to big price increases or that much of a change among retic keepers.

    I just had a baby Albino Western Hognose snake surrendered to my reptile rescue in Virginia. He was abandoned in an apartment complex hallway along with several other reptiles and inverts. Owner got evicted, left everything behind. We found him a good home, after several applications came in, but we have a set adoption fee no matter what the animal is. He was perfectly healthy. This happens quite a bit too. Animals are just left behind in apartments. We have 2 iguanas that a cleaning lady found, they were left behind and were in the empty apartment for 2 weeks before she found them.

    Who are buying all of these super expensive ball python morphs? It sure as heck isn't the every day keeper. It's other breeders, or wannabe breeders. So they're basically selling amongst themselves, jacking up the prices amongst themselves.

    • @thelastkelpie
      @thelastkelpie 18 днів тому

      Exactly. I literally traded 20$ worth of self propagated plants/cuttings for a "500$" ball python. I said yeah, I'll give ya some plants for it; poor guy was a failing breeder and needed to get rid of them so badly he offered me two for one! 😅 I personally don't care too much for them so I took one and called it good 😊

    I might have to agree with you on some of these ideas. I was never a big fan of reptiles , I didn’t dislike them, just never thought about them & would not ever think 💭 of them as a pet. Then I came across Emily and Ed Snake 🐍 Discovery. After watching them for over a year, I have to be in Iowa for a wedding & the next day I am going to take a drive to Snake Discovery Zoo. It is a 4+hr drive each way. I have seriously been looking at cages and supplies to see if I can afford to possibly own a reptile , I would never considered a reptile if I had not watched hours of you and Emily and Ed. I can’t wait to go to the zoo next Sunday and look at adoption island.

      Have fun!! Snake Discovery is also what got me into reptiles, and now I have a ball python. Couldn’t recommend a pet snake more honestly. Fairly low maintenance and just a chill pet all-around.

      So this post is 3 weeks old now, I'm curious to know how your trip was and if you decided on a reptile? I live in Iowa myself and I have yet to make it to Snake Discovery. I'm glad the gas prices are going down.

      @@JupiterJamie My vacation was fantastic, thank you for asking. I was able to make it to Snake Discovery and meet Emily. It was a great day, the zoo was fantastic. I plan on returning next year for labor Day weekend, they most likely will be having a anniversary celebration and big raffle again. If you have the time, I would recommend the drive to go. Just check on the schedule to make sure Emily and Ed will be there. I am leaning towards a gecko, either a crested Gecko or a fat tailed Gecko. I have to move in a few months so I decided to wait to see what we find for a rental and what the space looks like, I know the Crested Gecko is semi arboreal so the cage would need be taller and the fat tailed gecko is not and the cage would need more floor space. In the meantime I am happily watching the egg hatching video's.

    Region might also have something to do with it, at least in part. I went to a reptile expo earlier this year and I think I only saw one or two booths selling hognoses for example...and even then there weren't a lot. But watching youtubers doing videos on other expo visits, there always seem to be tons.

    Also I think youtube has popularized the reptile hobby overall. You mentioned in the ball python section of the video you didn’t know about the morphs etc, which is the exact same for me. I think UA-cam showed a lot of people reptiles are not what they originally thought keeping reptiles would be like and how many beautiful options there are. I’m a perfect example haha I’m planning on getting my first reptile within the next few months.

    Adam, you mentioned Antaresia. I recently got my first Spotted Python here in the UK. They really are wonderful little pythons. And there does appear to be more ads from breeders/shops etc selling them now. Prices aren't too bad. My local rep store has a young granite spotted in for £200 UK. Not sure what that equates to in US$ or C$.
