In this video, we will answer these and other commonly asked questions such as: Is nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast the same thing? Does nutritional yeast contain vitamin B12? I was eating a lot of fortified nutritional yeast in recipes such as "cheeze sauce" when I went vegan and after a month or so I developed an itchy rash on my neck that was constant. I never connected it until I stopped eating it for a while and the rash cleared up. I was curious so tested my theory by adding it to my diet and - presto - the rash came back. I can't prove it but I believe it was the synthetic B vitamins. I now eat it almost daily, but I consume only unfortified.
Very good information, thank you!
There are no synthetic B vitamins in it? If you mean B12, its not synthetic. It would be way too expensive to synthesis B12, its made by fermentation.
But high B12 consumption has been linked to acne. As the p.acne produces B12, but when there is a lot of B12 in its environment.. its stops producing B12 and start producing inflammatory substances.
My feeling is that it was the artificial form of folate, folic acid, that may have been causing the skin problems, but I can't be sure. I have been following the latest info on B12 and as you say, it seems all the medical gurus are now cutting back their recommendations of B12 from what was considered ideal before. It seems over and over it has been demonstrated that you can't fool Mother Nature. Just eat real food.
@@lorin9489 Well thats weird, why would they put folic acid in it... when folate is so common and plentiful in foods. The one i use has folic acid listed in the nutritional info, but not in the ingredient list. Need to check it up.
@@lorin9489 Thanks for the info, i was about to switch to a cheaper stuff i can buy in bulk anyhow. I hope that stuff has nothing added into it.
My wife and I love nutritional yeast on popcorn, but I never really knew what it was, so I decided to watch this video. I must say, very WELL DONE!! It was very informative and I too appreciate that you dove into the differences between brands and fortified vs not fortified. I learned a lot and am inspired to check out more of your channel. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching and glad you got something out of it. We were interested as well having eaten it for many years...
What'd be awesome is if most corn wasn't tainted by the depopulation AGENDA. That's awesome you use nutritional yeast regardless.
Is the TRADER JOE'S Nutritional Yeast okay ? It doesn't say it's fortified.

Genuinely genuinely surprised by how well made and informative this is. Bravo, and thank-you.
We were very interested in it since we consume it regularly...
Thank you for this information! Very informative!!
Fantastic overview. I eat the unfortified version and eat quite a bit of it. Salad with olive oil, apple cider vinegar and nutritional yeast is fantastic. You can also use avocado in place of olive oil. Cats like the taste and it's good for them. I also put it on my scrambled eggs. It's so good.
How much of the yeast do you use a day on average? I want it for B vits. Oh, and if you're in the UK which brand do you use?
Why unfortified?

I got it, Not fortified I should buy
Amazing video, covers all aspects of the nutritional yeast. As a nutrition professional I appreciate that you have avoided common misconceptions, as those regarding the B12 and even pointed out the controversies, surrounding this product. Well done!
Excellent info,,thanks a lot.
Thank you for this very informative and non biased review. I had just bought some and was shocked when I listened to somebody else’s review, which only ranted about the adverse side of nutrional yeast. I’m so glad I came across this review and feel I can make a very informed decision on whether to use it and how to choose which one I do use. Again, thank you.

Thanks to you and to many of your viewers for adding a lot of balance to my question of 'Do I really need nutritional yeast?'
It's not sold where I live, seems to cost a lot online, and I'm not really bothered about the 'cheese' taste anyway. I'm not missing it yet (newly-converted vegan) and think I could do without it quite happily.
It was just that lots of nutritionists and cooks were adding this ingredient to many recipes as if it was essential and I needed to know if it really was, or whether it was just a question of satisfying a taste craving.
However, given that I'm not partial to possibly adding lead or other unpleasant substances to my diet, don't fancy severe bloating, spots or rashes, and that I take a daily multi-vit (and always have done), I think I can give it a miss. Thanks everyone :D
Just buy some active yeast it's very cheap, then heat it up in a frying pan, no oil, and keep stirring gently till light brown, that will deactivate it, a lot cheaper than the other and very easy to do.
Great video, so balanced, thank you
I thank God for people like you sharing useful information...you're awesome!

I sprinkle it on my food. It's Delicious! And if I run out, I can tell the difference in how I feel.

It was annoying and generic.
Very informative!!! Thank you. :)
I was glad to see the synthetic supplement warning, especially folic acid.
Thanks for sharing your information on nutritional yeast.
That was a fun topic!
Have to agree this video was very well done. The description is complete, the images are clear and informative, good editing, audio and the english accent is very clear for non native speakers, like me. The background music could be lowered a little.
I'm still not convinced about the Yeast. It's relative inexpensive in my country, but I thought would be a great source of B1 (like > 800% IDR)....it turned out it's NOT that much. It's high in B5 and B6 though.
Check out "Red Star Nutritional Yeast Flakes" the b1 is over %800 Daily Value its what I take everyday.
TY! Very informative. I love it on popcorn and wondered what else I could use it on.
You bet!
Great video. 1 thing.. You showed us nutritional labels comparison between brands in the video.. But how can we really trust the accuracy of printed labels ? Who has verified the claimed nutritional labels ??
Just the facts, that's refreshing.

Great video; interesting and thorough. I couldn't find the non-fortified when i went to buy it so i bought the fortified which is amazing on popcorn! But i will try harder to find the non-fortified.

"4:27" & "10:26" regarding a comparison of brands of nutritional yeast, with the former more focusing on B12 & that it doesn't naturally occur in nutritional yeast (which, by the way, is -- somewhat concerning -- "derived from a sugar source," rf. MY CATS LOVE IT! as do I. It didn't occur to me that it's good for animals. I did some research after the 4th time I found my Mama cat on the kitchen counter licking the open flap of my nutritional yeast shaker, and found it's recommended for cats and dogs. Now I sprinkle some on their food every day. It's great for picky eaters apparently (my cats aren't). Her grown son was reluctant until he saw his Mom going at it and now he perks up when he sees the shaker too.
That is awesome! Very interesting as we don't have any pets...

I'm sure I'm off the subject here, but I started adding a package of quick rising yeast to my cake mix. I did it out of curiosity and wow it was amazing how high it Rose in the oven and did not sink in the middle. Then I tried making peach cobbler with that recipe and it was excellent. Add yeast to everything. That's my take on it
This is not the same product. The yeast you refer to, is literally rising yeast, it is a LIVING organism and its' respiration process causes the rising effect.
thanks

I use a tablespoon of non-fortified nutritionally yeast mixed in my daily morning bowl of oatmeal. Also love it sprinkled on hot buttered air popped popcorn.
I'm not a vegetarian, but have a severe vitamin b deficiency and need supplemental protein. After hearing about the benefits of nutritional yeast and tasty flavor, I bought some in the natural food aisle at Giant. I add it to homemade bone broth that I make weekly. It's yummy and I feel better for adding it to my diet.
Love the stuff here...
This is two years old but let me share what I read: the meat of turkey is rich in B vitamins. I eat not cold cuts but cooked in the oven breasts. 100 grams = 104 calories. 84 grams will provide: 61% of B3 for the daily needs. - 49% for B6 and 29% for B12. As vitamins and minerals work together, it is not a bad choice to get some of our B vitamins and still eat less greasy meat. *Less than 50 milligrams of cholesterol for 100 grams. I use it in the mornings mostly with saladas or veggies or rice and veggies or potatoes etc.... as I do not eat gluten. Substitutes either. Substitutes for breads are filled with oil of palm and or could have carragean that is a no no and sometimes too much sugar that I do not want.
Glad it is helping
if it tastes good its not the correct one.
THANK YOU

The Bragg's brand is in the background of your video during the unfortified section. I'm confused. Is Bragg's a good brand?

Very helpful video, thank you. I was using fortified nutritional yeast a LOT in my vegan recipes. I developed an itchy rash with tiny bumps on my neck and had it for months. I switched to unfortified last summer and the rash and itchiness went away. I tested it by taking a tablespoon every day for 2 weeks and it didn't come back. Good enough for me. I believe it was the B vitamins they "fortify" it with. First it's artificial and secondly it's unnaturally high amounts,, particularly folic acid which is the artificial form of folate. Now I take a B12 supplement. I worry about vegans who aren't aware of this and eat it almost every day, especially if they are feeding it to their children. I know B vitamins are water soluble and not stored for long in the body, but still...
VERY interesting!

6:57 this part confused me. Are the only organic nutritional yeasts grown on grain? I have an organic non-fortified nutritional yeast. It only has 15%of daily value of thiamine in one serving. The Sari foods non-fortified one has loads more. Is the difference because mine is organic?
I guess just give the comment a ❤️ but don’t answer the question. Thanks anyways.
