- In our PC Time Capsule series, we revisit important PC games from time gone by on the hardware you would have played them on back in the day - for the most authentic experience. Performance analysis is carried out using the tools of today! In this episode, Alex and John revisit Far Cry 2 - a game that saw the debut of the Dunia Engine, and the transition of the franchise from Crytek to Ubisoft.

To this day I find the way the leaves fall after an explosion near a tree insanely good looking. The way the wind carries them away is just impressive. Who ever made that effect deserves a lot of praise.
You have to remember the guy named Alex Amancio who is responsible for this title (art direction and the lead for the overall game). Each and every game he came up with was unique in its own way. Assassin's Creed Revelations, Far Cry 2 and Assassin's Creed Unity are not the usual games you would find out there.
As someone from South Africa I loved how a Lot of the Mercenaries Spoke Afrikaans to you while Fighting, classic lines like: Wys jou tande dan skiet ek hulle flenters ( show your teeth so that i can shoot them to pieces) was just pricless to hear the first time!

As a console player of the time (x360), playing this game blew my mind, the amount of simulation systems interacting made the game so much fun to play with. It seriously felt like A next gen game with all the dynamic environments
yeah, absolutely. I was like 13 when I played this for the first time, and it was a pretty incredible experience. grew up with Mac's in the house, so this was one of my first introductions to PC style sims. the fire propogation, weapon durability systems, and (relatively) expansive world were really compelling. i think you can hear at points during this video that they start to appreciate what this game was during its release period. as someone who never was able to play crysis in it's original launch window, this was the closest thing I had, and to me it was amazing.
Well for the 0.000001% of gamers who could actually play crisis I guess Far Cry 2 was a pile of garbage.
This game deserved better than this video. Makes me want to make my own to balance out the universe...

@@realityvanguard2052 At the time on ps3 and xbox 360 system this was the closed crysis experience you could get on console no other fps games had this freedom and technology, this was one of the first sandbox first person shooter throught.
the period of ubisoft they truly weren't afraid to try new things. Even if most of the gameplay aspects wouldn't resonate with most FPS fans at the time.
Now they rinse and repeat every game.
People really criticized this game, and lauded Far Cry 3. It’s kind of easy to see how Ubisoft arrived to the conclusion they did when it came to risk taking with their IP’s. The sales of their titles since that decision speak for themselves as well.
I'm admittedly one of those people whom have had genuine enjoyment with FC2

its a shame that they didnt look some mechanics though. for example gps mechanic really need to make a return
Alone in the dark 2008 would be an amazing game to look at from a technology standpoint in this series

I remember playing the demo and being blown away by it. Too bad I never actually got the game.
I played it at a friends house on console. The New York stuff was amazing to play. Never got any further though and I hear it goes downhill after that.
The game where you have to blink? No.
far cry 2 is by far my favorite of the entire series, the atmosphere was so unique and realistic, that to this day i still play it from time to time, i remember the first time i got it, it blew my mind, with the heat and healing system, such a legendary game

About the NPC bouncing on high framerate: just YESTERDAY someone released a mod that aims to fix it (haven't tested by myself though)!
UPDATE: Just tested before and after applying this mod and can confirm it works perfectly! 👌
Oddly i rarely encountered this issue when i played it a few years back. Steam version of far cry 2.
I only got it to happen around 90 FPS or higher. I should really try this mod!
Far Cry 2 - Multi fixer - fixes all the common bugs to date. I couple that with Redux Mod.
i remember people trashed this game bad when it came out but i loved the realism. one of my favorite games good to see now people appreciate the game years later

The attention to details in this game is astonishing.
I played FC1 > FC4 > FC3 > FC2. In exactly that order, and FC2 is my favorite of them all because of reasonable realism/physics/weather and total immersion. Crysis 1 is in second place, because I didn’t enjoy the second half of the game. FC2 from start to finish feels very consistent and true to your expectations. Too bad, they didn’t take it as a base for subsequent upgrades and fixes. FC3 felt like a joke to me (gameplay mechanics wise).
If you could light an area of grass around an ammo point at a guardhouse on fire, the fire would spread to the ammo boxes and cause discharges and chaos
There were many places the fire was useful both intended by the devs and in dynamic situations. Not many games have a flame thrower that you can use on every single mission if you so choose...
Man, Far Cry 2 and 3 were so unique at the time. It's like two completely different games.
ya far cry 2 hardcore gritty and experimental, far cry 3 casual, easy and streamlined with almost no repeatability. so different

Far Cry 2 need more balance with the guns. All the guns I've seen is rusted and old looking. If it had just a few tweaks to make navigation easier it would be more liked.

Crysis and Far Cry 2. Two of the most technically impressive video games of their respective years, that still hold up shockingly well today.
Far cry 2 was trash. And crysis is one of the worst optimzed engines there is.. crysis looks bad on series x and can’t hold 60. It doesnt hold up today just poor optimization.

IIRC, the feeling of not making an impact on the world (vis-a-vis checkpoints respawning) is intended, as you're meant to feel the futility of being a lone actor in this sprawling conflict. Destroying checkpoints just results in more soldiers being fed into the meatgrinder and achieves nothing except temporary passage.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that. The map definitely felt dense and alive to me. Have you tried navigating the wilds of africa? roads through a jungle are going to be like this. These "corridors" are more engaging than far cry 3 and subsequent releases to me
I played FC2 after I had completed FC3. FC3 had a few good moments, mostly related to its story, but the world immersion just wasn’t on the same level it is with FC2. I prefer the gameplay of FC2, even if it gets tedious sometimes when you have to move half across the map, shooting the same guys all over again. FC2 is more of a simulation, rather than your arcade shooter that the following FC games have become. Fingers crossed FC6 will have some of the cool moments of the second game. I have played all but the Primal and the 5th game, and FC2 is still my favorite by a long shot.
Modders have figured this game out very recently and it has some great modifications that make the gameplay better and more diverse, with proper faction warfare, much more grounded firefights, better AI, shooting while driving and lots more.
This is still my favorite game in the series despite its shortcomings.
At the state of the current GPU market, I think I'll revisit my library of unfinished older games

Going back to older stuff on my newer 2k/165hz monitor is such a nice alternative to new graphics hardware.
There were a lot of wow moments in this game. The shadows were great!
The main attraction of this game is its unique setting, I can't remember other open world FPS games set in Africa

I had an obsession with this game. I actually got emotionally involved when you had to kill your buddy, or at the end when the double cross happens. I never understood why so many people liked to dump on it, it's one of my best gaming memories.

They really didn't talk about any of the mechanics or features which made this game great for the time.
This game does alot of things very well. In-world navigation (organic UI implementation) and world building elements (high quality weapons cost diamonds, and never jam, which also is another way of saying factions aren't rich enough to provide most of their soldiers with quality weapons, only the top folk)
One of the Jackal tapes actually explains the reason why there are unreliable weapons around in that geographical area.

I remember one mission at night. I was attacking some kind of mansion an was up to my neck in enemy soldiers. I hid for a minute to lick my wounds and assess the situation, and I remember this one enemy yelling in pain and calling for help, and another enemy yelling him back, things like ”you are going to be ok, I’m going to get you.” By the time I got up, this dude was already evacuating his comrade, dragging or carrying him away. I shot them both feeling sick to my stomach.
At least this is how I remember it happening.

Oh my goodness. So glad you guys covered this game, one of my favourites of all time. The immersion levels made possible by the world in this game aren't often matched... truly stunning. I'm praying they remaster this one day and de-jank the AI a bit.
Too bad they didn't really appreciate any of that and just did a surface level discussion almost solely on the aspects people unfairly targeted and singled out at the time eh. I've played through this game dozens of times. It's tied for my favourite shooter of all time along side Halo and Doom

Well, because you had different expectations. FC2 isn’t your average arcade shooter. You have to have a different mindset playing it.

This is still the best immersive Far Cry game and my favorite far cry game.
The way the environment responds to explosions and fire is actually impressive to this day. Lots of great ideas in this game, just lacked good execution of the concepts.
Despite its shortcomings, this is truly the best Far Cry game to date, perhaps even by a mile. Back when immersion meant something.
The fire physics were awesome in this game! And it was missing in the following Far Cry games😂 .....

i was just playing it again on 3060ti at almost 200 fps after watching this video, saw the jumping dudes lol, even the non-combat npc's in town are always jumping, can't take the atmosphere seriously...
Yeah. Anything beyond 75 fps makes the engine go haywire.
I remember liking FarCry 2 multiplayer. It has an awesome map editor and a fun community behind it. It will be missed
My brother was a big part of that community. He used various objects, mostly ammo crates, to construct vehicles like tanks, helicopters military trucks and interesting bunkers and buildings. Some of the maps made by dedicated editors were truly mind blowing. Even if the mp itself lacked polish...

This game had mercenary who Xhosa, Zulu & Afrikaans with a very accurate accent way better than what I have seen in Hollywood.

This is one of my favourite games of all time. So immersive. But I still wish we had more animal interaction. Also, the online had a ton of amazing maps to download online.
The game was rushed, I don’t think the lead designer got everything in the game that he had planned. The wildlife, sadly is poorly represented compared with the games that followed. But at least you didn’t have to skin them to get upgrades. I think, buying things with diamonds was a better idea than killing animals. There many things that this game did wrong and could use fixing, but there were also many things that it did right. But you have to play the game for a while to start getting the feeling.
Far cry 2 was so ahead of its time a remake with new game mechanics would be amazing

I remember preordering the game just to get the fortune dlc pack with the silenced shotgun. Glad they eventually integrated it into every copy. Really wish more games included that weapon, its fascinated me ever since watching No Country for Old Men.
This is my favorite Far Cry game, the most immersive of them all. Fun fact: the game creates autosaves at many spots and if you don't delete them periodically they can make the Load Game screen take a lot of time just to show how many save spots you have.

I actually really loved this game and it's the only game along with crysis that still looks decent and playable. I know far cry games usually have their annoying stuff but I really enjoyed it. Guns sound beefy(even beats newer games sometimes), the game feels hardcore and more dangerous. I liked the malaria thing, the guns getting damaged overtime etc. It makes you always have that worry and I liked it. Games don't even do this. There was more I liked to it but I forgot 😅 it's been years now but I enjoyed it and after watching this video, it made me feel like playing it again. I loved the setting and weather in the game as well. I just wished the jackel story continued

@Ekquizit Sounds alot of launch titles for the new ps are just ports or tech demos that you have to pay $70 for, while new pc games that come out are still fairly priced and can look or run smoother

I spent many hours creating maps using the editor.... on PS3, it was tricky to use but the results were decent.
I have it for xbox 360. I still make a lot of maps, it's very entertaining. Shame nobody plays to enjoy them. I miss those days when lots of people play Far Cry 2, I regret never play it when it was on high demand, we never know what we have until we lose it.
Absolutely LOVED this game on PS3 back in the day, and I still rank it as one of my best gaming experiences ever. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but the feeling of being alone in this hostile world where pretty much everyone wanted to kill me was incredibly immersive. I preferred to stay hidden as much as possible so I traveled on foot 90% of the time, no matter the distance. Cars and boats just attracted too much unwanted attention. Obviously it was time consuming as hell, but sooo tense and rewarding. I wish I could experience it for the first time again.
Still looks great! I remember upgrading from the 9500gt to a GTS 450 with a Q8300 for this game. Good times

the map editor in this game is by far the most intuitive map editor ive ever used, loved making maps for this game back in the day, even if i never released them to anyone...

I think John hit it pretty much spot on when he said that many things this game does just don't feel compelling. The weapon jamming/breaking maybe kinda works, but the malaria, the car damage, and even things like wildlife. They exist, but it doesn't feel like they add anything to the game experience, rather they present a minor annoyance that can be taken care of extremely easily. If, like John suggested, they were more rare and offered some special, memorable moments, it'd work better.
Same goes for the outposts - you often backtrack or go through areas you were in before, and I understand that if every outpost you clear remained empty for the rest of the game, the traversal might feel boring. However, the almost instant respawn makes clearing these a chore, the same monotonous task over and over. What they could've implemented was some sort of area control - when you first come into a new area, where enemies still have a lot of control, the guards "take back" their outposts. However, as you progress through this area, and begin to suppress the enemies, their numbers drop and can no longer afford the take back what they lost. Not only would this cut down on the annoyance, it would be logically sound, and make you feel like you're changing something and overcoming your enemies.
Still, a very interesting game that tried a lot of stuff, even though it often didn't work out as planned.
*Why does every game have to make you feel like you're changing something and overcoming your enemies? I think it's just fine, what should have happened is the outposts take longer to respawn, maybe 2 in-game days. Not every game has to be a power fantasy where you're a superhero*

I LOVED Far Cry 2, I played with my friends almost every day after school for a couple of years, we used to go to a Lan House (I don't know if this is a thing in other countries, but here in Brazil it is a place with a lot of computers connected in LAN, most of them were for people without computers in home, so they were basic computers for text editing or internet access, but the kind I'm talking about had high end gaming PCs and you pay by time) and we had so much fun. Far Cry 2 had a lot of innovative things and the AI did things that never came back in the latter Far Cry games, now every Far Cry game looks like a modern Assassin's Creed in first-person with repetitive gameplay.
This is so nostalgic for me. Thanks DF.
I still remember getting far cry 2 for my birthday and it just would NOT work. Nothing I tried could get it to launch. Was so disappointed. Ended up buying a copy for ps3 just to play it.
It worked several years later when I got the game again on steam. But for whatever reason, the physical release just failed to launch on my rig

I completed the entire game on Xbox 360 and it was a very good version. It even used MSAAx2. No quick-save was the biggest problem on consoles.
This was the era where it was made possible to use the same display for both PC and console. I had a 26" 768p LCD TV, which was just perfect for the 360. I played so many games on it and loved it.

Far Cry 4 was the sweet spot. Best terrain and those awesome vehicle takedowns.
I just love the African civil war setting of this game. Its just so special and the selection of guns or the fact that you pay with diamonds rather than money add to the immersion. I also love the music.
Guneplay wise it can't hold up to later Far Cry titles but imo this game feels much more serious and unique than the other titles so FC2 is the only one I keep coming back to.
The fire in this game still holds up and is better than 3, 4 and 5 IMHO

I played this on PS3 back in the day and about a year ago I ran in on my gaming PC. It still holds up well by today's standards. Such a great open world game. I spent hours playing with the map editor on PS3, good times.

I was always technically impressed by Far Cry 2, but the open world aspect felt taxing. The world also felt empty as well - where is the wildlife!?

About the Jackal, a widespread fan theory is that he -IS- Jack Carver due to how he looks, his mercenary background and even his name which is not far off. The idea is that after the first game he became a weapons dealer type due to... reasons? It's never been confirmed in any official capacity but yeah.
Game still looks great lol. It’s got that detailed, clean-ish look with a sprinkle of “modern” effects that I love. Games theses days got so much post processing, reconstruction/TAA and an over usage of effects that the whole image feels “fake”. This game also has that physics built into it that’s completely different from today’s super scripted and baked games. It’s like they gave up on interactivity and just started creating movie sets instead.

Most immersive Far Cry game. And the best one imo. Lol, complains about the opening of the game being boring also complains about enemy respawning. Really trying hard to sh*t on this one aren't we.

@@antoniog8276 Here are some option that they don't mention. You can full speed ahead and pray to god they don't catch up to you in your vehicle and depending on the type of vehicle you're in, you can jump on the turret in the back and maul their asses. You can sneak around most of these outpost. The "tunnel" map design claim is BS. You can confront them which will grant you access to items, each outpost will have specific items. Once you clear one and scout for say medkits, it'll be on your map for next time you go through there. You can confront them... which is fun, dunno what the big fuss is about. Apparently gameplay in a fps shooter in repetitive now? The AI in this game will fck you up and that's the challenge. That's the test of skill. Once you see a vehicle up your way. You have to engage, running away ain't an option in this game and that's the point. That's the fun of it all.
I said it once on Twitter, but I'd be *really* interested in a PC Time Capsule video about experimental or forgotten technologies that used to exist in early-/mid-2000s games and are now unavailable or cause issues on modern hardware. Stuff like Creative EAX sound (like in Thief: Deadly Shadows), W-buffer (Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc), shadow buffer (Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow)...
Df on world in conflict... that was a challenge to run back in 2007

You guys talking about playing this on PC back in the day really brought me back. Far Cry 2 holds a special place in my heart and your guys commentary on it and the games of the time was spot on and a great watch. Love to see it running on older hardware.
I have always wanted to replay it but every time I’ve tried I’ve been frustrated by the lack of fast travel and constantly driving through the hallway roads and have given up. Don’t have the patience I used to have.
The lack of persistence like John said is what made me drop this game pretty hard when it came out. I hated the fact that I would clear a crossroad outpost, walk down the street, come back and there would be new enemies there.
Tbf "lack of persistence" is kind of the point of the story. If they did something like the later games where you take over outposts and control the area then that would completely undermine the theme and story of this game. In later Far Cry games you are shoved into the camp of one of the 2 main sides. In Far Cry 2 you really are an outsider with his own agenda. You do missions for both main sides just to achieve your goal. The whole point of the story itself is that one man can't change a whole conflict and that after all that you've done throughout the game barely anything has changed. Imagine having liberated outposts and controlling areas like in 3 and onwards... that would completely defeat the point of the story.
And to be honest that's one of my main gripes with all the Far Cry games (except Blood Dragon) after 2. The narrative and gameplay tell completely different stories. For instance someone inexperienced who is trying to survive on an hostile island (narrative), is not the same as being a shark punching John Rambo (gameplay).
@@tominatorxxfc2 is just as gamey and inconsistent with its story, if not more. Get malaria, pop a pill, instantly go away. That's push-button-box-open level of gamey mechanic. Tedious is not immersive.

This game was good , but the bullet spongy constantly respawning enemies killed any momentum it build. Constantly clearling checkposts over and over which respawns enemies suck all the fun out.
at the safe house in the beginning when he reloaded the save, the one NPC he knifed was wounded not dead that's why the safehouse would not open xD
pity as they never got to talk about the wounded NPC mechanic that let u bate their teammates out.

I love these series because my last dekstop lasted me basically till Witcher 3 DLC release. Originally built around 2009, with 2 cores E8600, 2x 1GB ram sticks, 4870 512mB. Upgraded to Q6600, 4x1GB ram and 6870 until it died off

I couldn't see the map very well when Alex brought it up but I don't know if you remembered that there was a whole second map unlocked once you get around 3/5 of the way through the game... it was a really, really huge game world for the day!
Oh, that brings back memories! I used to play this game on my old workplace pc somewhere around 2013, which was dell optiplex with core 2 duo and radeon hd 6670 low profile card. Got around 45-50 fps out of it in 1280x1024 with high/medium settings. I actually completed the game. It has some flaws, but it feels really unique and has great atmosphere. I actually think that it's map is amazing, much more natural looking and feeling than in subsequent far crys with it's collectotron overdose. It's a flawed but very compelling experience, unlike modern formulaic and cliched ubisoft games.
Far Cry 2 multiplayer is actually pretty funny, since multiplayer kept all the mechanics (even rusting weapons). The matches can get pretty hilarious
I suffered through this game on PS3 with all the screen tearing.
FC2 was one of the reasons that i upgraded to 2xGTX260 SLi and then to i5
I'd buy a remake of this game in a heartbeat.

I loved playing MP with my brother and old friend years ago on PC. With community made maps it was awesome.
While Far Cry 2 clearly has a lot of attention to detail, animation and systemic designs which it deserve praise for - I'm also mostly stuck with the memories of how annoying this game is. How checkpoints respawn, makes you feel like zero progression. How patrolling cars respawn in (kill one batch and the next one comes right around the corner), how stuff breaks down, your malaria etc. It simply is one of the most tedious games I can recall.
I'm surprised the negatively around the game especially the world systems like fire propagation is amazing

I love the optional tutorial in Gears 5, it works well in world and the banter is excellent, especially if you love brunch
I mostly remember the enemies in this game being bullet sponges that wore very little armour.
The thing that I hate about this game is how quick the outpost respawn and the malaria fever.
@@wboumans Haha true, it was even worse for me on the ps3. Every damn time I clear an outpost and having to go back the other direction and reclear that same place again within like 10 minutes.
@@QueueTeePies I really wanted to love this game on release as I adored Far Cry on the OG Xbox (didn't have a PC until 2011) but I found that having to constantly redo the outposts became tiresome extremely quickly. I never got further than 4 or 5 hours in to it. Shame, as the ideas are great, it's just the execution wasn't.
@@CrizzyD91 Far cry 3 solved many of those issues which was why I enjoyed that game more. Sad that subsequent FCs are just refresh of the 3rd game.
