our rivers were dredged of large rocks and boulders years ago too develop the forestry mill resources, trucks now do what only rivers could back in the day , the idea of adding rock riffle and log structures back like there was originally is the cheapest and simplest way to help rebuild the stocks that require these different habitats ,the more we restore the greater the chance of sustainable recovery of all species ,adding rock weir riffle can be used to both add pool depth as well as re attach channel to the natural flood plain ,they have been successful in replacing old death trap weirs and small dams where pool depth needed too be maintained for recreational and irrigation interests while removing the eddy current death traps with a rock bolder rapid structure with variable water speed and depth through out the structure which allow fish too migrate naturally passed what was in most cases a impassable dam or weir structure opening more length of river for spawning ,another issue where these structures can be used too improve passage is where raised discharge culverts exist , either by erosion or bad design, ,,, bolder back fill the lower side of the culvert will slow erosion as well as create fish passage ,
