How to connect a USB storage flash drive to your iPad Pro 2021 M1 using a USB C to USB adapter using a CableCreation USB C to USB 3 adapter cable.
Just a simple USB adapter cable for connecting your USB storage drives and USB flash drives, sometimes called a USB thumb drive to your iPad Pro 2021 M1.
One end of the adapter has a USB C connection that connects to the Thunderbolt USB C socket on your 2021 iPad Pro M1 and the other end of the adapter has a USB A socket that's USB 3 10Gb compliant for speed and this is where you plug in your USB flash drive.

Great presentation. When I plug mine in the iPad mini it says that I don’t have enough power. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thank in advance
Hi. Unfortunately, it is exactly as the error massage is saying. The iPad does not have enough power to power your USB storage device. The only way you will get around this, assuming your USB storage devices is formatted to a format the iPad will understand, such as ExFAT or APFS, is to use a powered hub or dock. A powered hub or dock will provide extra power to the USB port for the USB storage device and will be able to power it. Cheers, Dave.

Hi. Just go to the video files on your flash drive using the file manager and double tap the video files and this should play it as long as the video file format is compatible with the iPad. Try the VLC player if the built in player does not see your video files. Cheers, Dave.

I have an Apple iPad Pro 12.9" M1 128GB Silver 5th Gen. I tried several USB C adaptors, including the one mentioned in the video ALL WITHOUT SUCCESS. After hours of googling and failing my iPad offered an OS upgrade. Since I was out of options I went for the upgrade. You guessed it, after the upgrade all three adaptors work fine. The OS version I have now is iPadOS 16.6.
The adaptors that now all work for me are:
Apple USB-C to USB Adapter (most expensive)
USB C Male to USB A Femle Adapter 0.15m,CableCreation USB3.1 USB A Female to USB C Adapter OTG 5Gbps Data for MacBook Pro Air XPS 13 15 S21 S20 S10 etc (the one in the video, mid priced)
Anker USB-C to USB 3.1 Adapter, Converts USB-C Female into USB-A Female, Uses USB OTG Technology, Compatible with Samsung Galaxy Note 8, S8 S8+ S9, iPad Pro 2018, Nexus 6P 5X, LG V20 G5 and more (Cheapest)

My neighbour purchased the newest iPad Pro 12.9 6th generation and an official Apple USB to USB-C adapter in order to transfer data from USB-stick. On the physical side the USB Stick fits into adapter, and the adapter fits into IPad, however nothing shows up on the IPad at all. No popup, in Files application nothing appears etc. I even tried it with an externally powered USB Hub (with power available) and plugged USB stick into that one and the HUB into the adapter but nothing changed.
The description of that USB to USB-C adapter lacks any mentioning of USB sticks, it just mentions this adapter could be used to connect iPad to Mac.
Formerly for Lightning based iPads there were some special Camera adapters via USB that could also be used for USB sticks according some Videos here. But there seems to be no such thing anymore for USB-C based iPads.
Can the iPad pro play pretty much every video file format on a USB stick? My Samsung galaxy tab s6 is giving me non stop issues and I am on the verge of tossing it for an iPad pro. Thank you so much for the straight to the point great video!
Thanks for that. I bought a complete USB-C Hub to connect all sorts of media. It’s the same one advertised in the Apple Shop but, buy externally and you can buy it for 25% of the price Apple want. You read that right. Buy external of Apple and SAVE 75% on Apple price for exactly the same brand and item they are selling. Good video David with your happy smiling face and Liverpool accent. Oh, that’s a good question. Find a solution yet? My first thought for a temporary fix is to save to ipad, then copy to flash drive (though I’m sure you’ve thought of that already). Cheers!
@@jayhache5609 If you have the cable like what is showed in the video and a jump drive yes you can save direct to the jumpdrive. I have. When you got to save just go to your files app and find your jump drive and save it.

Sadly it does not work with a non-pro iPad. The cord doesn’t fit an IPad. It is slightly too large…so disappointing.

Hi John. I don’t think you can. There are certain protected files and folders that Apple don’t give you access to. To be honest, Apple limit the file structure too much and their file management/browser isn’t very good. Cheers, Dave.

Ipads support otg?
I have been having trouble with my iPad Pro 12.9 not reading my flash drives/external hard drives. Pictures, videos and some documents show read only. I’ve formatted the flash drives to exFat. Do I need a specific flash drive or external hard drive. I have the apple adapter to connect these. When I first got the iPad I plugged in an external hard drive (WD) and it played a video with no issues. The next time I tried it would not work just “read only”.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Monica. I’m not sure what that problem is. You are doing the right thing, formatting to ExFAT, as this should work. It seems odd that a drive you could see and could play videos off, then stopped being seen. Cheers, Dave.

I’m hoping they do a lot of improvement on the files system.
I use an Anker hub with a PD input port and I can charge it while I’m moving stuff. It has two USB ports and an SD and micro SD slot.
This works on the iPhone also with the iPhone camera adapter and you can power it as well.
Both options will work with an HDD or SSD as long as you have the PD plugged in.
Yes, isn’t the file system dreadful. If there was a proper file system and organiser then the iPads would quickly become serious alternatives to laptops. But I think that’s where the problem is, Apple want to keep different products in their own lanes which defines their usage. This is why (I think) so far, Apple have not let the iPad Pro do too many things that their laptops can do. That said, it seems a bit pointless to put the M1 in the iPad Pro and not have it do Pro things. I’d like to hope that Apple will unify Mac OS and iOS for the higher end devices so that there’s only one OS but that would definitely blur the lines between the products and doubt Apple will do that. Although, Steve Jobs said that iPad would never have a pointing device (mouse) and that changed. Maybe there’ll be some good news at WWDC next week as far as iPadOS/iOS is concerned. Cheers, Dave.

Newer flash drives usually comes with both USBC and USBA. I made all my old flash drives go retired.

Hi Lisa. You wouldn’t necessarily have anything called untitled, that’s just what my drive was called by the iPad. If your external drive isn’t in a compatible format, your iPad won’t see it. Cheers, Dave.

I agree...I'm transfering files now from my flash drive to the ipad pro 12.5 2021 and it's taking forever. It's just a lot of photos I'm transferring. I can't see any type of time frame are nothing like I can see on the pc.

@@lilartroom you’ll find that no app will give you proper file management like you’d get on PC or Mac, even Android is way better. The problem is not the apps themselves, it’s iPadOS not letting the apps do certain things to access files, locations etc. and not allowing for simple folder structures and searches etc. Cheers, Dave.
Apple will not let me copy, or transfer video clips and photos from my iPad Pro hard drive to a USB stick; They keep deleting them; supposedly because they are not mine to keep on a flash drive, in the 1st place.

Hi Peter. I'm not sure what that's about as I'm able to copy video clips to and from the iPad and any external storage. The one thing that you can't do though, is to move files from the camera roll. For whatever reason, Apple don't give yo access to your recorded files via the standard file browser. Back in the day I used to use iTunes for that or by plugging the iPad or iPhone to a computer, in my case a Mac, and copy/move them that way. Cheers, Dave.
