  • No layout update yet, but enjoy some trains running in the mean time. All trains in this video were shot on the lower level, which represents the western end of BNSF's Hi-Line Subdivision in Montana. The portion I model is between Whitefish and Conkelley. Of course, there is no scenery yet, and most of the models are unweathered or unfinished...it's still fun to run trains though.
    Enjoy!

      Thanks, Grant! It is a pretty cool perspective. One of the design aspects I like about the layout is that the lowest and highest track elevations (for each respective level and for the layout in its entirety) can be observed from the same spot.

    What are you carving and sloping your Foam with on the curve? Hot Wire?

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220  3 роки тому +2

      Exactly. I bought a hot wire foam cutter off eBay. It has a couple different attachments. And the foam looks a little weird right now because the layers aren't actually glued together, so they've shifted around a bit.

    how can you run more than one engine on the same track? or are they dummy engines?

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220  3 роки тому +1

      I, like most people, use a system called Digital Command Control (DCC). What that means is that the whole layout is powered on and every track is at a constant ~12 volts. Each of the locomotives has a decoder within it with its own address. It responds to inputs from my controller that are sent as information through the command station and then the rails. Based on that information, the decoder draws a specified amount of current to then move independently of other locomotives. This technology then also allows one to consist different groups of locomotives to run together.

    Didn't bother counting cars. But I see I may need to divert from collecting power units and concentrate a little more on building up my rolling stock. Do you run any of the ST Operator locos, or do you strictly have Rivet Counter?

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220  3 роки тому +2

      It's always a tough balance. I like to run long trains, but it's totally dependent on what your layout can handle. I wouldn't even consider these to be "long" trains, but for my layout they sort of are. I subscribe to the .25 rule, which is to say that I want my train car count to be roughly 1/4 the number of the prototype trains. So the first train, which I believe was 28 cars, would represent a manifest with 112 cars in real life.
      But to answer your question, I only have Rivet Counter locomotives right now, but I'm intrigued by the Operator series and have almost ordered them before. My one hesitation has been that so far for BNSF, ST's offerings have had some fundamental body style error because they standardized the molds for the operator locomotives. There are no road specific details, which means the Dash 9s don't have the gull wing cab, the ET44C4s don't have the C4 trucks, and the upcoming ES44ACs are the wrong road numbers. The last two could be easily fixed, but by the time I get that done, I'd almost rather purchase a non-sound Rivet Counter version without spending too much more money.

      @@railfan220 I only recently got back into the hobby and was focussed on both early Pere Marquette and later c&o and Chessie. Then the addiction got me into modern CSX so I picked up some early intermountain es44dc, until I got my first rivet Counter. So figured I'd add a up and bnsf rivet Counter. Then a couple more. Picked up a bnsf operator to compare. Haven't added my parts kit yet, but after that, it will have better detail than my early intermountain's, and tower 55. Plus a solid drive train. I'm not as much a stickler on specific details to road numbers but am sympathetic to those that spend rivet Counter prices and come up short. I'll probably be adding a few more operators to the fleet, but roller bearings do get my attention, anyway.

    2 C4's on a coal train huh? :p

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220  3 роки тому +1

      Haha keen eyes. I was trying to make a statement that this is a “western circuit” coal train. I’ve noticed that whereas coal that heads south or east out of the powder river basin overwhelmingly runs with a 2x1 setup and all 6 axle AC power, PNW coal trains often have 3 leaders and 1 or 2 DC (or C4) locomotives. For example, I’ve seen lead consists include 2 C4s or a C4 and Dash 9 plus a 3rd AC unit like an ES44AC or ACe. I even saw a photo of an ES44DC leader with a Dash 9 and ACe heading down Mullan Pass. Granted, that train was empty. Perhaps they wouldn’t run that consist loaded.

      @@railfan220 Hey, if you've seen it, then who am I to say anything lol. I worked in Colorado for a year and I don't think I ever saw a coal train with DC power except for maaaybe once or twice.

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220  3 роки тому +1

      @@ConductorGoldy absolutely. It seems wrong because in my mind BNSF strongly segregates their power, reserving AC only for coal. I first noticed the mixed consists on a trip to Washington a few years ago. But your comment has sparked a new curiosity, and it’s something that I could perhaps work into operations. Maybe they try to reserve the mixed consists for empty trains. I’ll have to do more research.
