  • The history of Korea began over 700,000 years ago when people started settling in the region. The first recognized state in Korea was called Gojoseon, which had a dispute with China’s Han dynasty and collapsed by 108 BC.

Hello, South Korean here. Thank you soo much for sharing this information and raising awareness about this issue. As a working korean myself, the working culture is literal hell. We work around 15 to 18 hours a day and even somtimes 19 hours. It gets soo bad to the point that we just end up sleeping in the office or the resting area instead of going home to save sleeping time. In regards to 회식 (company dinner), its not that forced upon, although u do get pressured to go there by your subordinate but a lot of people do understand that you would rather rest instead of going out for dinner. The worst part of it all is that, many korean people have no choice but to work this long hours because properly price is expensive and living cost is on the rise.

I worked as an English Teacher at a Hagwon in South Korea from 2018-2019. I left for the exact reasons you stated. Students bullying each other was even not taken seriously. When I mentioned it to my director about what was happening, nothing changed. The student being bullied, changed schools because it got so bad

I live in a country (Scotland) where less than 100 years ago, a normal 21st birthday present, for girls especially, was a visit to the dentist - to have all their teeth pulled out, not always under anaesthetic by any manner of means. The water here is naturally pure and soft; great for making whisky, drinking and washing, but the lack of natural salts in it is not good for making strong teeth. Coupled with the love of sugar here because we had a vibrant industry importing it from the Caribbean and refining it for worldwide distribution, which made it cheap locally... well, you can guess that tooth decay and almost constant pain from it was huge. Pulling out all the teeth and getting falsers was a seemingly perfectly reasonable answer to the problem. On the other hand, it may just have been a very sensible method of birth control, but we won't talk about that, will we? ..... and we can be sure that in good old Presbyterian Scotland they didn't either. So, when I see these vids about how weird the habits of other nations are I take them with a pinch of salt... but not sugar... and our dental health is now good and getting better all the time. What a shame!

I think it must be ultra shitty to have studied so hard for so many years and even get a professional degree to then be faced with a reality in which you wouldn't be able of exercise your profession or even worse don't get a job at all (I mean if it is bad in countries where the academic competition and presure isn't that extreme, it must be worse in a culture where children are burdened out with pressure and a lot of homework since an early age).

As an American living in Korea for five years now, to be fair, _most_ of these issues mainly just apply to Seoul. Most Koreans outside of Seoul aren't this miserable. The work grind and long hours are true, but family life is a lot stronger as well, so people endure through it all.

As far as I am concerned, South Korea is a huge global entertainment, with their artists becoming in-demand endorsers (ahem, see Philippines).
And to be fair, I thought they are world class. The plot is quality and interesting, or at least based on the series and films I watched.
"Parasite" becoming the first non-American OSCAR Best Picture speaks a lot of their storytelling artistry.
Plastic surgery and using it as parents' gift in graduating HS is something I knew long before their entertainment boom.
What's surprising is the high bullying cases and and high plastic surgery demands.
As always, thank you for this feature. Every country has its ugly side that we need to acknowledge, the same way we recognize their attractional and appealing side.

I think the argument can be made that this was sort of true in the late 1990s, which was a pretty bad time if you were to hypothetically ask anyone from both Koreas. But South Korea was suffering from the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which was caused by the excesses of capitalism. They were one of the most affected nations by the crisis, along with Thailand and Indonesia. Meanwhile, North Korea, a centrally planned economy, was suffering from a literal famine caused by the recent collapse of their ally, the Soviet Union, and was too inflexible with food production to respond effectively.

No system or country is perfect. They all come with flaws and benefits.
Despite everything mentioned in this video, this system promotes a "be the best version of yourself" culture. It can be suffocating and a small percentage doesn't survive it. The ones that do though, excel. The overwhelming majority is way above average. The average Korean person has basic practical intelligence, broad knowledge and common logic. In comparison with most other systems / countries, where the very few excel, and everybody else is much below average, with a large percentage of the population living at the idiot level. The fact is that despite its problems and harsh reality, South Korea as a whole brings real growth, development and vision to humanity, where in most other countries we get social degradation from a system of ochlocracy and idiocracy. While the west fights on what to do, Korea has done it and does the next thing. Which system delivers happiness is a whole different discussion but a log getting rotten in the rain is naturally happier than a person who struggles becoming the best and helps lifting humanity in the process.

Living in the UK I have seen our standards drop dramatically, parenting is not regarded as a worthwhile job anymore and they are leaving it up to society to teach their children how to clean their teeth, how to eat with cutlery and even how to potty train. No ambition for themselves or their offspring, except for the upper class. You don’t need to be rich to be a good parent, just caring.
