If they have the abject gall to say Jace is overpowered, yet are perfectly OK with "Phyrexian Obliterator" or "Sheoldred, The Apocalypse" doing the abjectly overpowered garbage they both do AT FOUR MANA, they don't deserve to play M:tG.
Magda not only creates a trio of pings it also makes an infinite loop right?
NVM it's once per turn smh
Outlaw is my favorite new mechanic. Because now Strixhaven is a school full of outlaws 😂
Strixhaven is full of outlaws, Secret Rendezvous is a crime, but Nicol Bolas is not a criminal and Torment of Hailfire is not a crime.
Bring back Bolas. WotC confirmed he did nothing wrong.
@@engiopdf8745 "Nothing Illegal" does not mean "Nothing Wrong". Something being a crime just means it's illegal, not necessarily wrong.
I'm still just hoping and eldrazy will just pretty much go over and step on all the rich people in charge.
@@engiopdf8745Wrath of God and Armageddon are not crimes either. So omnicide and scorching/salting the Earth are not crimes.
Not to mention... attacking your opponent with giant dinosaurs isnt a crime at all
Jace not being able to be cast on your first, second, or third turn is a brilliant way to reference the story, where he only reveals himself near the end
I appreciate you covering pioneer, I moved away from my commander pod and adopted pioneer as my new main format and it’s nice when you bring attention to the format
I love Pioneer!
So you were a pioneer in moving away from Commander.
Funny you should say that, a friend and I both just dived into standard on Arena and went bi weekly with the pod at my place. He's been having a blast playing 60 card formats.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege I went looking for your Pioneer review for this set and almost didn't watch this due to the title. It could have been Modern related. Thanks for continuing to cover the format!
1:45 that is actually not what it says, it copies any spell cast when ultimated, not just instant and sorceries.
Does that mean creatures???
@@belial7428 Yes, when a creature/permanent spell is copied it creates a token
More argument to fit into izzet phoenix
Damn... that's way more powerful. I guess The Prof didn't read the card before he explained the card. 🤣
Yup, any spells cast are copied and you choose new targets for them. I think the 2nd ability is where I'm most excited. It's a huge mana save and allows you to dump spells out on one turn and overwhelm your opponents. And being that plot is an ability, it doesn't require Jace to survive in order to play for "free" later. Oh yeah, and if you want to, you can plot ANOTHER JACE!!! LMAO
Yeah, another thing to note, is that when casting for free with plot, it is still "Cast" so the loop for this jace seems to be
1. Plot a bunch of cards both with jace and normal plot mechanics.
2. Ultimate
3. Dump all plotted cards, and copy every one, including plotted creatures, which there are a bunch of.
4. Profit.
It seems like it would be quite good in an Izzet midrange plot deck.
Not the video I expected to say this in
but RIP my man Toriyama
Prof, unrelated but I need to know where you're buying your suits from, especially those you wear during your shuffle up and play, please! 😭
You could even make a video about your drip, it'd be fire!!
Honestly just find a Men's Wearhouse. They are reasonably priced for basic stuff. But for suits like his you're paying a few hundred. But the staff is dedicated to making you feel and look great and all alterations and repairs are free for the entire life of the suit
Mostly from thrift stores. The more wild ones I wear on Shuffle Up are often bargain bin finds at Macy’s for, like, 70% off
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Appreciate it, thanks! 😁
@@TolarianCommunityCollege your thrift stores must be amazing, I can never find cool suits like that
Love that Prof uses the wild Reaction Face™️ and sensational title to engage The Almighty Algorithm - but then immediately undercuts it by answering bluntly in the same title and thumbnail 😂
mutavault and vein ripper are quite relevant outlaws. there are not many relevant artifact creatures in pioneer, so i think go for the throat reigns supreme
I think how they wrote the reminder text for shoot the sheriff is funny! “Everyone else is fair game”!😂
It is funny indeed, but somehow it does rub me the wrong way. Should it not just be flavour text? Ah well, it doesn't really matter.
It feels more like hearthstone flavor text.
@@skeletonrowdie1768 Flavor text doesn’t usually reference the effect of the card outside of acorn sets.
@@jeezuhskriste5759 And reminder text doesn't usually include jokes. It's more Hasbro transgressing the boundary between reminder and flavor text than it is a form of either one.
@@eegles Why do you assume it’s Hasbro? Joke rulings have been around for a while, not because higher ups said to put them in, but because WotC thought it’d be funny. Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar’s ruling “Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar is pronounced just like it's spelled.” and the card as a whole exist because of an old joke at Wizards.
One thing I love about High Noon is that unlike most similar effects, it has a built-in off switch so long as you have five or more mana. If you get late-game and there isn't much movement one way or the other, being able to 'draw first' and unleash whatever you might have built up for could tip the game easily. Doubly so with the Plot mechanic, since you can build and build and build, waiting, then pop High Noon, resolve a huge batch of cards for free, and if you REALLY want to be malicious, either grab it from the graveyard or play a second copy from your hand to close the door behind you.
i think the thing some people might be missing is the static says the card can't be CAST on those turns. that means planeswalker reanimate decks (not sure how prevalent those are in other formats) can possibly get this out super early.
true, but if you're using reanimation why not use it on bigger, better, walkers?
@@Northernheros is there a reason you’re being a toxic a-hole?
Teferi taught me that casting a planeswalker with 2 mana up to protect it is a strong play pattern and this guy does that a turn earlier so even though his loyalty abilities arent as strong it will still be a fine card
Teferi is continual card advantage, can protect himself, recoups mana over the course of a game, and has a game winning ult. Jace has none of those things.
BIRD WIZARD
dammit that makes me feel old, proff
Nice top two! Looking forward to tying those out! 🍷
13:30 Absorb is the only 3 mana counterspell (before OoTJ) that is actually exciting to me. It's really good!
Even then, it's just not worth it. The requirement of 2 blue and a white just to counter and bolt feels bad
always happy to see pioneer videos!
welp i think youve convinced me to build a pioneer deck! i havent played a 60 card format since Eldritch Moon when i got sick of standard, but this seems much less stressful than keeping up with standard rotation :3
That was a great sponsor transition, I laughed :)
Smooth transition to the sponsor message prof!!!
I love helix beds! Gonna get myself one soon!
Definitely gonna have to add Slick Shot Showoff into my Adeliz deck.
Professor, what an excellent transition into the sales pitch of mattresses.
Dude, i love your ad reads
Most Spree cards can be relevant in Pioneer. They are just... too good.
I liked this video just because if the lead-in to the ad read. Well done. 😂
Gah, that phone was amazing! Well done sir.
Professor, you'll need to learn what a Goku is eventually because I'm sure we'll see a Universes Beyond crossover at some point. Gotta play Magic with all my favorite brands!
Slickshot Show-off would make a good addition to my Gandalf the Grey wizard tribal deck, "The Wizard Council."
Prof went 200% for the ad transition and I'm here for it.
Holy Cow! That background!
Can would love if you made a shuffle up and play with from and dark pact cosplay love your videos! Especially shuffle up and play commander!
This with magus lucea Kane and some untap cards is stupid good. Definitely adding to my Tyranids upgraded precon
The black spree card and bloodletter will be a great new pioneer tool as well! Black blue control shell
I think the line "Its owner may cast it as a sorcery..." in the rules text of Jace is the main thing that makes him much weaker than he looks. The control decks he might otherwise synergize are mostly stuffed full of instant-speed reactions - kill spells, counterspells, etc; mostly things that you do not want to plot (counterspells you CAN'T plot, that's just exiling a card from your hand for no benefit, since you can't counter at sorcery speed at all).
That Magda might just have a cozy home in my imodane the pyrohammer deck I'll have to look into it
That red bird has so many possibilities!
I appreciate it when the Prof puts the answer to the clickbaity question into the clickbaity title.
slickshot show-off makes a great tongue twister
Slick shot is the best card in this set by a mile love him
RIP Akira Toriyama
Loved this video!
While that jace will probably not find space in my Superfriends deck, it definitely will see itself into my "Paradox" (the Dr Who mechanic) deck, as the middle ability will easily let me do a lot of paradox shenanigans. (Am also changing my commander to Loot, this set is great for that deck)
I have an izzet pheonix deck. So for me is going to be amazing
That ad read might have made me awaken 😂
Prof sounds mad like Chuck McGill at the start of the video haha
Smoothest sponsor transition ive ever heard 😂
I like this "can't be cast until x turn" thing, I'd say it opens for more fun design opportunities without powercreeping everything.
My first thought on slickslotslowoff was does this make wizard burn a thing. It's been like almost there for a bit..
I mean, yeah, you can copy extra turn spells with his ultimate, but also you could copy the OG Elesh Norn and kill everything your opponents control with 4 or less toughness, and as a fun side effect get +2/+2 for all *your* creatures. +4/+4 if you have a way to ignore legend rule. And if you have a way to ignore legend rule, then *any* legendary permanent spell is gonna go crazy.
For example, a second Jace Reawakened.
Or imagine having 2 Thrun the last trolls. However could they answer that.😊
You're absolutely correct about how Elesh Norn interacts with copies of herself, but have fun explaining the rules to all the people who will tell you that creatures don't "see" the -4/-4 :P
1:48 nah it's any spell which I didn't realise at first
I was cracking packs while watching this video and pulled a Slickshot Showoff during the segment with him! I hold you responsible, so thank you!
im a believer in plot cards in general. they feel like theyll be able to make some crazy aggro strats, especially in standard
Just big turn and bushwhack?
Leyline of Anticipation + Jace on opponent's t1/2 seems like it would be pretty strong. Only issue is that plots can only be played at sorcery speed and blue control is heavy with counterspells that don't synergise.
Sorcery speed :). But yea.
I don’t think that the anti synergy matters bc the looting ability means you don’t really need to plot most of the time
@@jamesgreenwood1703 mmmm difficult to say. 2cmc looter isn't very exciting (especially if we're jumping through hoops and running leylines to get him out early - I'm thinking JVP except with leylines). Feels like you either have to be able to abuse plot or just wait til t4 and play it slow.
Getting him out early on turn 2 doesn’t even matter, it’s not like the wandering emperor where you can activate him then so then you’ll just activate him on turn 3… which is the same as when you could normally.
@@yoyoguy1st Normally you can't cast him until turn 4, so turn 3 is a turn early.
Can’t wait for the Fallout Secret Lair alert video
Ooh wizard deck does sound fun
Wizard burn sounds fun
Real question: what is Slickshot show off' art representing? Specifically what is the bird throwing?
Next Halloween, I’m dressing head to toe in bluish green. That’s right, I’m going to go SUPER CYAN!!!😂
Jace's ultimate copies any spell, not just instants and sorceries.
Don’t copy a Shark Token! It will die due to having no counters!
Does it? Shark tokens are * / * creatures not 0/0 with counters. Since a shark token is inherently i.e. a 3/3 on the battlefield with no counters, i would expect the copy to be a 3/3 as well. Correct me if i'm wrong
@@hl6142 If you're talking about Shark Typhoon's tokens, that's correct: the tokens are created with a specific stat line, and thus those stats are copied. (They're part of the permanent's copiable values.)
So fun thing you can do with Jace: you can plot him.
0:27 Is that a Motorola ? 😂
Yup, and odds are it still works. Mind you I don't think they work on modern networks.
SsSO looks awesome
Your opponents control their spells. Targeting their spells (i.e. when you counter them) makes a tapped treasure, mostly on their turn because of the nature of countering things. Yes, she's a control outlet. One of the most compact ones I've seen.
❤The deck, when it takes by storm, better be named "magda, all in" and known as being named by
The professor 😊
Magda + Amulet of Vigor + Mayhem Devil = Win
I'm already running amulet and the devil in a commander deck.
It's not a win, magda only triggers once per turn
I don't know if this is relevant but the card only says you can't cast Jace. If you have an effect that put a permanent on the battlefield you can get around that
I don't know if it will do anything in Pioneer, but I was ecstatic to see the return of Grand Abolisher to a Standard-legal set. I love shutting down interaction on my turn.
What card is grand abolisher in standard
It’s in The Big Score. It’s WW for a 2/2 that stops your opponents from casting spells or activating abilities of creatures, artifacts, or enchantments during your turn.
@@brycejohnson6234 I didn’t know those were standard legal
This set’s a little confusing, unfortunately. Basically, the main set (set symbol = cowboy hat) and The Big Score (vault door) are Standard legal, but Breaking News (jail bars)and Special Guests (star in pentagon) are not.
@@brycejohnson6234 Thanks Lyra the Dawnbringer!
Time to go super cyan.
"I don't know what the hell a go-ku is." xD
Prof could you test Quintessential MTGs deck box?
I wonder if there are extra turn/skipped turn shenigans that can make this card either played sooner or to effectively make it so the spell can't be cast within its own condition.
There's an interaction in Yu-gi-oh with Swords of Revealing Light and Pyro Clock of Destiny. Swords makes it so your opponent can't attack, it then destorys itself on the opponent's 3rd End Phase. Pyroclock of Destiny advances the turn count by 1. Doing this during the 3rd turn when Swords would have destroyed itself, makes it now the opponent's 4th End Phase, meaning Swords doesn't and will never destroy itself.
The way the condition works is that it only counts your turns. As long as it's your turn and you've begun three turns or fewer, you cannot cast it. (This is the same as for Serra Avenger.)
If you somehow take extra turns early, the extra turns count towards your three-turn delay. (For instance, if you're playing with no banned cards and you cast Time Walk on turn 2, your extra turn is your third turn, and you'll be able to cast Jace on your fourth turn, even though it would normally be counted as turn 3.) If you skip turns, you haven't taken those turns, so only count the turns you do take towards your three-turn delay.
There's no way to make the condition turn the spell uncastable (as long as the game isn't over: if you're taking turns, eventually you will take a fourth one). As for casting it sooner, the easiest way is to cast it during your opponents' turns (since it imposes no restriction there), but extra turns also make it happen sooner (because your fourth turn comes faster).
Kaervek, the punisher is mybe the card for mono-black discard
“Super ‘Psy-yawn’” left me shook 😭💀
Fun fact, Profs pronunciation of 'Saiyan' is more accurate to the original Japanese than the English dub is.
Maybe I’m jumping into spoiler hype, but I can’t fathom that Final Showdown won’t make any sort of splash for control lists. An instant speed board wipe with a few more optional tools seems pretty enticing :)
Someone must have pointed it out but I can't find a comment; Jace's ultimate copies ANY card type as written
three steps ahead is so brokenly good
Leyline of anticipation cast jace on your opponents turn 2?
yes!
Professor, Magda wouldn't be bananas if the treasures entered untapped because she wouldn't be a token artifact that can tap to add red or green and gain 2 life
I can't see Shoot the Sheriff replacing Heartless Act.
I like Slickshot Show-off. Thank you for the video Professor.
My playgroup discovered this the other night:
Thanks to Thunder Junction, the detectives of the Ravnica are committing a crime when they suspect another creatures.
The real villains of Ravnica are the law....
Q: Does plotting count as if you had cast something? Will it trigger Prowess or any similar ability? Or does it only work like Cycling or Channel?
Plotting is considered a special action, so it doesn’t count as being cast. Similar to Suspend.
Plotting a card is a special action, it doesn't use the stack, it cannot be responded to and it is not considered casting the spell. Plot costs are not alternate casting costs.
On the other hand, casting a plotted card from exile (without paying its mana cost) _is_ considered casting a spell.
I've never been here so early. Hi Prof!
Becoming a dad has made me appreciate the puns so much more. 🤣
Does this work? Planebound Accomplice, Jace, use ability, flicker, use ability again, doesn't die at EOT.
Indeed, if some effect tells you that you have to sacrifice/exile a permanent at some point in time, and you flicker it before that time, you no longer sacrifice/exile that permanent.
Ah yes my favorite meme. A reference to the lyrics of a song from the early 70s.
Dear lord I hated the Dream Trawler when it was in Standard.
Didn't richard miss the pay 10 life equip cost on the hand of vecna the second time?
I am an MTG player Prof., but the question I would like to ask you is, "Is it worth it to buy an Outlaws at thunder Junction commander deck?" 🤔😅
He’s good no doubt about that. The loot ability is nice. The 2nd ability is great on a plus. -6 is irrelevant. The restriction is an odd one, he would be super-duper good without it, he’s still good with it.
(reads list of Outlaw creature types, laughs in Ninja)
I'm disappointed that Jace and Vraska came back. However, Outlaws set seems pretty good. Is it going to be only one set block?
Throwing Jessie under the bus like that though
No Pest Control? That card is amazing.
Folks, you think #1 would be viable in Burn?
Sure you sorta tread water on T2 since it is plotted but T3 could be explosive... 3x Lightning Bolt to burn face/remove blockers and then swing for 7 looks good to me!
Tbh he looks like a fine card to enable my nivmizzet deck. Otherwise it seems meh. Not sure it'd take chandra's spot.. but its a cheap alternative (copy spells, draws cards)
