Learn how to mix green
Hah I spent 30 minutes chasing my tail with green blue and white using cobalt hue. I used phthalo blue and got the perfect color in 10 seconds :) thank you for saving me
Really pleased it helped.
Will
I think there was a book called "blue and yellow don't make green" or something like that and it taught about colour bias.
I like that green grey on the left.
Hi there - Have spent last month or so beginning (again) in acrylics after many years - Your videos are fabulous - you are the best instructor I ever had (oh yes you're a wonderful painter too....) I look forward to many more helpful instructions - especially love the color mixing theories/demos - but all of your videos are wonderful! (And like previous post - I also love the background music - what a great bonus!)
Laura M Thanks for your kind comments Laura, so pleased you've been enjoying the painting tutorials (and the music!)
Cheers,
Will
I have been Painting for quite a few years, but I keep going back to your great tutorials which are very inspiring. Thankyou😀
+Harriet Williams Great to hear it Harriet, pleased you're finding them helpful.

Love the music. You are clear, right to the point, and easy to follow. A pleasure to watch
You are a great teacher.! You have given me the inspiration to give painting a try. I really am a sketch artist really.
God bless you! Thank you very much! Your video is very helpful. I wish you the best. Good morning , good day all day!
Thank you! You too!
The one on the right is sooo pretty!!:)
Excellent video. Thank you for teaching the world Will.
+marshal rodriguez Thanks Marshal, really pleased you've been finding them helpful.
Cheers,
Will
+willkempartschool hello, is there any way to make the blue on the right?
+Katelyn Pug You can't mix the blue from any other colour, blue, yellow and red are called primary colours and you can't mix them by combining other colours.
Cheers,
Will
That is a fantastic and brilliant demonstration of blending. Thank you Will.
Glad you enjoyed it
I was searching for the green colour on the right. That's when i saw your video. This colour is perfect for my painting. Thanks will 😊
Great sound!!!
they’re both such beautiful greens
Fantastic, thank you. I love both those colours you’ve mixed.
What a wonderful teacher you are!
Thank you Delaram
very useful info man. And you did really good job on the video: little definitions and extra info popping up, the surprise that the darker color turns out to give the brighter green, well paced discussion that was relaxed but to the point, you emphasize the real take away at the end.
You just did a good job! And thanks for introducing me to Lisa Hannigan!
Thanks very much Jason, pleased you found it helpful.
Will
Wow, I have never know that! You opened my eyes on color mixing, subscribed immediately ❤️
Yay! Thank you!
I use the gray paper palettes as well. They show the color for exactly what it is, even while mixing. Thanks for video.
Hi Boss,
To get bondi blue, mix together Phthalo blue (green shade) and Hansa yellow and Titanium White.
Thanks,
Will
You have 2 kind of ultramarine blue : tint red and tint green , the classic one is the red but you can buy the green one too ...
Thanks very much BleakeACE15, your sketch artist background will help you loads, you'll be able to pick up colour mixing very quickly. Looking forward to seeing your results.
Thanks,
Will
I love your channel! I studied painting/ design in college and i love watching your videos! I sure wish i had these videos to watch when i was learning about color theory! I could have saved so much money on art/color theory books :P Keep doing what you are doing!
Really pleased you've been finding the colour theory lessons helpful.
Cheers,
Will
Cool dude, it's colour scheme looks calm and it could be useful whenever I'm doing a Vaporwave art 🖌️🎨🖼️.
Lisa Hannigan - Sea Song
Saw this while searching youtube for a way to create the color Bianchi celeste green. Thanks- need it to retouch some paint chips on an old bike that I just bought. At least I have the base paints to work on and to arrive at the color needed. Thanks again !
Good one Israel, hope the bike retouch goes well.
Will
Thank you so much I just found the color I was looking for
My pleasure Yvonne, so pleased you found it helpful.
Will
Excellent Educator. Thanks so much.
I have to thank you, Will. You've been such a great help to me on my journey. I'm so glad I've found out about you and your website! You have my subscription :)
@deblovetrains
Hi Deb,
Pleased to hear that they're easy to follow, thanks for the like!
Will
Hey Miguel,
It's essential for successful colour mixing,
Enjoy the rest of the videos,
Cheers,
Will
thanks. Always struggle when making sea colours, this really helped
Great to hear it.
Will
Thank you for all the informative videos! I learned a lot! May I ask a weird question? Why is the ultramarine blue a "red" bias pigment? I can't see any red in it.....why it couldn't just be "blue" bias?
Hi C.Y, yes, that's right, it will still look blue in it's mass tone but when you add white to the paint it will reveal the bias colour within the pigment.
Will
Thanks,
Will
what song is playing in the background?
+Deanna Carol its by Lisa Hannigan
Iv'e learned so much from your chanel thank you 🌻 Please keep up the good work
Thank you Helen! Will do!
Me being the stupid person I am used cobalt blue to achieve that teal- ish color, this video was SO helpful
Not at all shorty, cobalt blue should be in the middle!
Will
Hi Cheryl, yes every colour will have a bias, just add white to see which way it leans.
Cheers,
Will
what can I use instead of a pallete knife?? I use the brushes .. but I see that I am wasting a lot of paint and also spoiling my brushes.. Thank you for your tutorial sir
+Devayani M Hi Devayani, i would invest in a palette knife, it will make such a difference to your paintings.
Cheers,
Will
Okay.. Thank you sir.. I'll try my best to get one soon.. We don't get it easily here...
+Devayani M essentially you're looking for anything with a curved cranked handle so you mix over your hand over the paint without getting your hand in the paint, in a pinch, you can use a small builders trowel, exactly the same principle.
Cheers,
Will
woh that really worked... thnku so much
Happy to help
So relaxingggg
Wow i didn't know this. So mixing white to darker colours makes the mix brighter then the other way, does this work for all the other colours too?
The white helps to reveal a colours undertone.
Cheers,
Will
Thanks, this video helped. I was having trouble creating the turquoise I was looking for but apparently I was using the wrong blue.
Interesting and helpful---thanks.
Good one George, pleased you found the video helpful.
Cheers,
Will
Is pthalo blue the same as kingfisher blue? They look the same but are they?
Hi Will, thanks for sharing this info! I'm a total beginner and will be checking this channel more. One unrelated question if I could though, what was the song in the background? :D
***** Hi Abbey, the details are in the earlier comments, its a track by lisa hannington. Cheers,
Will
That was very helpful 👍🏻
i love your videos thanks a lot!
+siti jaafar You're welcome Siti, pleased you've been finding them helpful.
Cheers,
Will
Beautiful
thanks a lot u like saved my day by this video thank you so so much😉😊😊😊😊
+Tafwiz Kadri Pleased it helped Tafwiz,
Cheers,
Will
Mmmm Lisa Hannigan👍
came for the paint mixing, stayed for the color theory
That phthalo blue what series is it & that white was it titanium series 1 because i did what u did & it didn't come out the same radiant vibrant color like yours
Hi Charlotte, the series shouldn't make a difference, that's just a labelling method manufacturers use to distinguish price bands of colours. You might be using a Phathlo Blue with a red shade, and this wouldn't be as Turquoise.
Cheers,
Will
THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!
Very handy vid.
***** Thanks
So cool
Thx for all ur helpful tutorials. Since im a complete novice, can u pl guide me which is better to chose between water and airbrush medium when mixing with acrylic paint. Thx in advance
Hi Danusmum, it depends on the effect you're after, have you watched my video on using mediums? it goes through some different techniques.
Cheers,
Will
Good information & interesting. Can this same mixing method and colors be used on oil based paint to get an aqua color ?
zane lile Yes, the same theory will apply to oil paints.
Will
Sooo nice .....
Thanks your tutorials are really valuable!
So helpfull, thank you!
Very helpful - Cheers
Sorry if someone has already asked this, but who is the artist you used for the music? It's great.
Lisa Hannigan- Sea song
It's nice way to know the colour.
Fantástico!!👍👍👍👍
aqesomely beautiful!
Is there any way to offset the color bias? If I have ultramarine is there any way to achieve the look of the pthalo blue and white?
Not really, if you where mixing a green you could add a yellow green like a hansa yellow but changing the blue pigment will make such a massive difference in comparison
willkempartschool Ohh thank you! As it turns out I was actually able to find some pthalo, so it worked out, but thank you anyway!
wow, thank you so much!
Hi Kathleen, it is Lisa Hannigan.
Cheers,
Will
this helps very much. thanks a lot for it :))
thank you Sir
You taught me what books and teachers couldn't do. Thank you :)
what if i use Cerulean blue instead Phthalo blue? will it produce turquoise color?
Yes, Cerulean blue is a green blue so will go towards Turquoise
thanks..:)
willkempartschool I accept that Cerulean blue is a green blue.
I really need to know: is there such thing as an unbiased hue? Is it just that it's hard to make as a paint? Why can't there just be true primary paints? Is it all just a scam to make me buy more paint or is it that what I'm looking for is impossible? Is this also an issue with water color, oil color, color pencil, etc.? PLEASE HELP.
Hi Brooke, pigments will always have a bias, you wouldn't be able to have one single blue that could mix a super bright turquoise and a super bright purple.
Cheers,
Will
Thankyou so much👍☺️
My pleasure.
Will
fantastico.
I used phthalo blue and cadium yellow and white I've spent two days doing my best to get a bright and vibrant turqoiste color... I'm an artistic failure it's always too dark and I barely even touch the blue I've tried it different ways 10000000 times and it's always the same thing;-;
I'd double check that the Phthalo blue you're using is a green shade, and then try using a green yellow like a Hansa Yellow.
Cheers,
Will
thank you!!
Please tell me where the music is from. thanks you.
It's from Lisa Hannigan
Nice boy
Hi @willkemparschool I'm totally a novice in acrylic painting but aspiring to be really good at it. Can you recommend lessons good as starters? Im very willing to invest but I want to find the best course I can take for beginners. Thanks a lot!
Hi John, the cherry painting gets great results as a starter.
Cheers,
Will
TY
It seems to me that many oil painters avoid phthalo blue because it is so intense as to be impossible to wipe off a brush. Is there any truth to this?
+bugisami Phthalo Blue paint does have a high tinting strength and can stain bristles, but not to the point that you would avoid using it.
Cheers,
Will
willkempartschool thanks
Nice Lisa Hannigan singing a song
What is the yellow that you are mixing in with the blues?
+Toni Wall Woops sorry! I just noticed that you told us at the very beginning of the video.
+Toni Wall Good one Toni, pleased you tracked it down.
Cheers,
Will
does it work on hair colours
If it was a bright blue colour and you are applying it to bleached hair, you can squeeze out some hair colour onto a white cotton wool ball to see the colour bias.
nice color
Thanks
What name brand paint are you using in this video?
***** Hi Jamal, I usually use Golden or Windsor & Newton
brilliant... :)
Thanks a lot Will
how do i get the color light blue
Just add white
Do you have a dvd for beginners! I have checked out several artists on utube and YOU are my favorite. You are a great teacher!
hlw do i get peacock blue
Using the Phthalo Blue Green Shade .
Cheers,
Will
Awesome tutorial,
Now what was the song playing in the background? My Shazam can not find it.
Thanks!
Unfortunately the Ultramarines themselves have more of a Cobalt blue colouring for their armour!
what is the music please
Lisa Hannigan
i just knew this-
That was unexpected.
Can I mix little black to make pathalo blue in ultramarine blue. Do suggest.
Hi Rupali, the black will darken the ultramarine blue and dull the blue even more.
Will
Hi Jonathan,
Cheers for your kind comments, I do have a range of courses for beginners.
If you go to my website, Will Kemp Art School, and click on courses on the top bar, the 'Simple Colour Mixing Course' is a great starting point,
Cheers,
Will
