- NEW DELHI: He wasn’t the classical spy who would go behind enemy lines but knew how to get the job done. Many would know RN Kao as the man who founded R&AW, India’s external intelligence agency, but that’s just one of the achievements of the man who was shy and hated the glare of publicity. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale talks about the spymaster who not only built institutions but also played a key role in strategising the lead-up to the 1971 war and the merger of Sikkim with India.

R N Kao was my dads boss & worked with Mr Rajeshwar Rao , Mr Nair my dad fondly remembered when one of his assistant had addressed him in a memo as Mr Cow , needless to say he was admonished & this followed by instructions to carefully follow the spellings to the rest of the staff , Bangladesh followed by Shimla agreement , these guys played a very important role & most importantly they remained behind the scenes, no accolades no mention unlike what happens now , in fact if Mrs Gandhi had been for-warned of the assassination & was offered to revamp her security but she choose not to & paid the ultimate price .
