I used to live in Barnsley' it must be 1980' 90's i was there last. I do have fond memories of the old town' Me and my friends used to go out on a pub crawl around Barnsley town centre on a Fri or Sat night then end up at the Rebbecas night club or the Japanese Whispers' we had an amazing time' i still look back and reminiss about the old days lol.
It was a bigger and better market before they started building. I remember the open space full of stalls. Joe Edwards show stopping crockery juggling etc. cheap stall rents so a huge variety of goods for sale. Hilton’s pie and pea caravan on cheapside with the spoons on chains. I believe it was the second largest market in England. The small one on market hill was by royal charter. It’s now just a car park. I don’t come into town anymore because the few times I’ve been I’ve been unable to get the things I needed.
Great vlog sir although I'm in total agreement with you about that concrete monstrosity which was the old market. I hated it since i was a child back in the 1980s. What on earth possessed them to build such an eyesore? Looking at the photographs on this vlog you realise how bad it really was! The new market is much better and although the exterior of the new market is lacking in character, the interior is very nice and has a great feel to it. The suspension bridge above the railway line is nearing completion and will add character to the exterior of the new market.
disliked the pebble dashed ridged buildings so good to see the last of them but having said that I do feel nostalgic about how the town looked. The new town centre looks great but somehow soulless (?) Thanks Old John for great videos
your view is wrong. i grew up with the metrpolitan center. it might have been concrete blocks but they had more character than what they've been replaced with, it all feels utilitarian now with no character at all
Which has a certain irony, when you consider Barnsley voted for Brexit. Then again the same thing happened in Wales and Cornwall. It appears idiots are everywhere.
@@iangascoigne8231 You are unfortunately right - nobody here would have even realised the projects that the EU paid for, and it certainly wasn't advertised!

Old market was best.
why is it a policemans business to ask why you are taking photographs ?
he would have got a ticking off from me and told to mind his own business.

Judging by these pictures, they’re not so vintage. Interesting nonetheless.
