    your view is wrong. i grew up with the metrpolitan center. it might have been concrete blocks but they had more character than what they've been replaced with, it all feels utilitarian now with no character at all

    It was a bigger and better market before they started building. I remember the open space full of stalls. Joe Edwards show stopping crockery juggling etc. cheap stall rents so a huge variety of goods for sale. Hilton’s pie and pea caravan on cheapside with the spoons on chains. I believe it was the second largest market in England. The small one on market hill was by royal charter. It’s now just a car park. I don’t come into town anymore because the few times I’ve been I’ve been unable to get the things I needed.

    After seeing an article in a local newspaper some years ago, my son and I donated money to a campaign by a Barnsley man, to raise money for a memorial to be erected near to where the pals went over the top on 1/7/16. I believe it is called the Sheffield gate? Although I may be wrong.t This man raised the amount needed and had the memorial sent to France. Before this, the only evidence of the great sacrifice by these noble and brave men had been a small plaque nailed to a tree. Now they have a fitting memorial, rest easy you lads of the 13/14 Battalions, rest with the Accrington(11) and Sheffield(12) men,and all, who gave everything in all wars,lest we forget.

    They ruined Barnsley with the '60's development and went even further with the Alhambra shopping centre. Add the terrible road system and you have a pigs ear of a town. We used to say it was all backhanders and brown paper envelopes and I can believe it. Small minded, short sighted and idiot councillors don't help. When you think of all the wealth created from coal it's obvious that Barnsley saw none of it.

There is another club and a pub too but they are at the opposite side of the village to where I live. Not very helpful and I am sorry I cannot give you all the information you need. My friend's wife, lived next door to Charlie. One day, Charlie was spreading manure on his garden. My friend's wife, asked where he got it from?. He said he'd get her some for her garden. Sometime later, Charlie pulled up in his Merzadies and opened the boot, it was full of manure for her garden. What a great and funny guy. You couldn't help but love him. A true legend, and a genuinely funny man, not like today's so-called comedians, with bad language. A true gentleman. They claim, he often came to town and sat in a cafe. What a wonderful tribute. Unfortunately. I never met him. People still talk about him. RIP. Thanks for the laughs.

    Great vlog sir although I'm in total agreement with you about that concrete monstrosity which was the old market. I hated it since i was a child back in the 1980s. What on earth possessed them to build such an eyesore? Looking at the photographs on this vlog you realise how bad it really was! The new market is much better and although the exterior of the new market is lacking in character, the interior is very nice and has a great feel to it. The suspension bridge above the railway line is nearing completion and will add character to the exterior of the new market.

    Hi John, mother in law lives on bleasdale Grove in monk Bretton, do you have Any history about the quarry opposite it? Thanks mate

    • @oldjohnsvlogs
      @oldjohnsvlogs Рік тому

      HI Alex, Dave Cherry, in one of his films, spoke about the quarry and, if I am not mistaken, there is a 'capped pit shaft' there. Look for Dave's film about the 'bare bones too,' there are several spellings of this, and also look for some of the stones. The last time my family and I went for a look, the stones were still there to be seen. I have a few fond memories of being in the quarry or, as we called it, 'the Reck.' Let me know what memories come back to your mum-in-law and I will try and incorporate them in a vlog. My wife wants me to go around Barnsley, making my films, but, for the amount of people who look at my vlogs, it is a waste of time at the moment. Thank you for getting back to me. P.S. My reference is about the quarry at the top of Buckley street.

    Many things I Recall; Where what would have Been The ship Hotel the Canal going towards Old Royston; I was fishing For Pike with Live Bait; A young Man with a Motor Bike took mke to the river Dern in Barnsley We caught Dozens of Minner Fish and Brought them Back to Royston Canal The Small Minner was Pulling an heavy float as if it was a Tug boat Pulling it along; After about twenty Minuit's the Small fish was all about worn out. I Began to reel the Line back in. and at the very edge of the Canal which had Bull Rushes a Small Jack Pike Jumped out and swallowed the Fish; Well with it being so Small ' I was going to throw it back in; But this Fisherman said Don't throw it in Put a Treble hook on its back: Pike Eat Pike {especially young Pike} and so I Cast the pike into the Middle of the Canal; Some Time later I saw what I thought was a Wooden Telegraph Pole Slowly Moving into the Direction of My Tiny Jack Pike; and then I Began to Focus Properly and saw that it was no Telegraph Poll but a Massive Pike: I was Sh*t Scared and began to reel the line in as fast as I Could ; The Guy standing Next to Me Said what am I doing ! Let the Pike Grab it !! No Chance I was not going to Have my Hand Bit off Yes I was a Coward ; Sometime Later there were some fish within a Keep net when Suddenly a Massive Pike Began to rip the Keep net so as to get at the Fish within My Dad once took me Fishing when I was about eight years old. Our Fishing Rods and Line and hooks were Elderberry Branches and Cobblers Twine and the Hooks were Bent straight Pins. A tiny worm on the end and we'd catch a few Perch

    I'm a bit of an old Bugger and so I Can Recall the Palace Cinema where We Kids could take a Few Jam Jars to gain entrance without paying: then when we did have to Pay: Some Cheeky Lads would Push the Emergency Door at the Side of the Building so as Half a dozen Lads could get into the Cinema for nowt: Then there was the Park ! The Park had a Massive Slide to it But to slide down it , It was Rubbish to slide Down. That was until Richard Davis and His Brother Roy squiggled some Candle wax onto the slide: Two slides down the Slide would cause it to be so slippery you'd go down so fast you'd fly off the end. There was a time I recall a Lad called Alan Chambers. he was less than four Feet Tall. Bless him He was only 23/4 years old where he'd Drank himself Silly. He was staggering all over the Pavement I Took him Home and Carried him Like a child on My Shoulders Sadly within that same Year He died: I Lived on Midland Road Not too far from the Canal and when I was asked where do I Live I'd tell who ever it was I'd say Down by the Canal ! You can drop in anytime you like ??? 😂

The lockdown has prevented me from going out and playing and, while I have been unable to play, my thumbs and fingers have become painful but, hopefully, I may be able to get back playing again soon. Due to my age, I am still not venturing into areas where I am in close proximity to other people. In my case, I have to be cautious about not catching things which may be detrimental to my health. If you are just starting out, playing the guitar, I recommend a UA-cam video called “The Only First Guitar Lesson You Need to see-Beginner Guitar Lesson” (Skip through the adds.)
