  • "What is Society? Definition of Society."
Society is a word that we use in our daily lives, but do we really understand its true meaning? In sociology, the term 'society' has a unique and special meaning that is different from the way we use it in our daily conversations.
For example, "Maharashtra Samaj" and "Gujarathi Samaj" refer to regional communities, while "Brahmin society" and "Maratha society" refer to castes. Similarly, "Hindu society", "Muslim society", and "Jain society" refer to religious groups. However, sociologists define "society" in a unique and specific way.
Maciver and Page “Society is the web of social relationships”
Wright - “Society is not only a group of people, but the system of relationships between individuals in the group.” (“It is not a group of people it is the system of relationship that exists between the individuals of the group.”- Wright )
    3) Tischler Whitten and Hunter - “Society is a social system that exists in a broad and comprehensive way. A society mostly has an internal system of recruiting members, it persists from generation to generation, it has a common culture and a specific terrain.” (“The largest and most inclusive social system that exists. A society recruits most of its members from within, sustains itself across generations, shares a culture and occupies a territory.” Tischleer, Whitten and Hunter)
    4) Dressler and Willis- “Society is a group of individuals who share a common culture and believe that we are all one.” (“A society is a group of people who share a culture and think of themselves as united” - David Dressler and W.M. Willis Jr.)
    5) Beodor Camplow - “Society is a self-sufficient and self-perpetuating social system consisting of men and women of all ages.” (“A society is a self-sufficient, self-perpetuating social system that includes persons of both sexes and all ages.” Theodore Caplow)
