- The Orchestre National de France performs Gustav Mahler's "Titan" Symphony no.1 in d major, conducted by Neeme Järvi. Excerpt from the concert recorded live on 24 January 2019 at the Radio France Auditorium.
Seven years after das Klagende Lied, an early work by Mahler, the composer premiered his first symphony at the Hungarian opera in Budapest (of which he was the musical director) in 1888, the same year as Shéhérazade by Rimsky Korsakov, a composer with whom he shared a strong sense of orchestral colour.
Mahler drew strong inspiration from Titan, the novel by Jean Paul, one of the most prolific authors of German Romanticism and also an influence upon Robert Schumann. Thus the Symphony no.1 was initially conceived as a "Symphonic Poem in five movements".
Its final form is classic, in 4 movements, but the score is distinctive for its originality and for its style unique to Mahler. Only he could imagine the murmuring noises of Nature in the first movement, the rustic waltzes and inspirations of Lieder in the second, the mixture of tragic and burlesque (the theme of Brother Jacques) in the third, and the immense nature of the final movement.

The best Mahler Symphony 1 rendition ever. Great aurally as well as the transparency is incredible-the individual sections are like jewels set in exquisitely finely wrought settings.

It is true. There are no bad orchestras///just bad conductors. How can anyone make Mahler sound boring? Well, that's an accomplishment in itself.
Au premier abord, j'ai été surpris par la lenteur de l'interprétation, mais quelque chose a surnagé : je n'ai jamais aussi bien entendu cette œuvre. Je suis revenu plusieurs fois écouter cette interprétation. Et maintenant, je l'adore. Je ne sais pas si elle est fidèle à la partition, mais elle est magnifique. Certains passages dégagent une émotion folle. C'est comme une amie auprès de laquelle je peux venir retrouver le réconfort quand je le souhaite… Bravo au chef, aux musiciens et au preneur de son, un magicien…
La partition originale n'indique pas le tempo, ni l'accent et n'indique presque aucune des nuances. Mahler (comme beaucoup d'autres) devait penser que c'est au chef d'orchestre de choisir ces paramètres.

I never understood Mahler's music until I read Mahler's Angel, by the writer Nuria L. De Santiago, a writer with soul, heart and race, who has been able to explain with clarity and a wonderful and powerful prose, the unknown and surprising life of the great composer. From reading the real life of Gustav Mahler from the hand of De Santiago, I understood his music and his soul. I recommend it to all the musician's fans.

The rather slow tempo of the opening movement really opens up the intricacy of the scoring. Instead of going for the big points, Maestro Jarvi imbues this piece with a maturity and insight that I find quite refreshing. And to crown it all: 53:58 just left tears in my eyes!

Very beautiful and sensitive music.
Great performance. Loved how Maestro Järvi stood up from his chair near the end of the piece at the same time as the horns did (instructed in the score).
Wunderschöne und lyrische Aufführung dieser spätromantischen und perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit farbenreichen Töne aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt echt melodisch und besonders lyrisch. Der erfahrene Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im relativ langsamen Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Eindrucksvoll!

The Gambler 1974 and, more famously, the Star Trek theme owe a debt to this piece.
An awful lot of Hollywood score writing draws from Mahler - especially for darker (obviously!) films.
@@MultiBadger32 Mahler and Dvořák are probably the most prominent in this department. To a similar extent Stravinsky. I reckon John Williams modelled his music on these composers, although he never reached anywhere near their compositional mastery.
J'adore à 27:20 l'auboïste qui gentiment se met à bouger la tète en rythme, puis son haussement de sourcil irrépressible. Enfin le sourire apaisé et tranquille de la contrebassiste. L'enchainement des plans sur la musique est vraiment planant :)

Personnellement, je trouve dommage qu'il y ai si peu de hautbois, j'aurais bien aimé un peu plus de presence prévue dans la partition, mais on y peut rien...
Mais bon, je parle en tant que hautboïste donc c'est normal que j'ai envie qu'il y en ai '^^

Fragmented. Great Ochestra but the conductor is showing his age. litsening to the Klaus Mäkelä / Oslo Philharmonic version you will know what I mean. great Ochestra though.
While Mäkelä's M1 with Oslo is better than this performance, he still has a long way to go before he is a real Mahler interpreter. He is a promising young conductor, but to excel with Mahler requires more life experience than he has yet acquired. Give him another 10-15 years.
Doesn't do it for me. Mahler had a fair amount of rubato in tempo, but there's too much in the Frere Jacques and the slower parts of that are too slow.

J'entend un royaume. Peuplé de Faune et de centaure mais de titan a proprement dit pas trop pour l'instant. Après grecque oui pour les longueurs un peu et les liaisons.mais a quoi le dire je ne sais pas trop.Par moment une nymphe ou deux. C'est magnifique la musique quand ca exprime sans suggérer.
Pour ma gouverne je désirais les explications avec des passages tiré de la mythologie ça serait fabuleux de voir comment il a retranscrit chaques carractères.

L'enjouement est une chose, l'engouement pour les cymbales qui résonnent en est une autre. Chaque cause à son charme et sa propre référence intime et personnelle, on peut y être plus ou moins sensible.
Tout à fait d’accord avec Dominique : c’est une version alanguie voire trop neutre. Certains thèmes sont noyés dans la masse sans relief - le lied du 3eme mouvement aux cordes devient inaudible . Très surpris par les choix interprétatifs du chef.

Some good moments in the final movement, but otherwise nothing special. Some of the tempi and transitions are quite awkward and the articulation is rather ragged for an ensemble of this quality. Not the best from Maestro Järvi or the orchestra.
