That’s really interesting, because that was the timeframe that K-Pop started to become noticed in the US. This video said that International fans (showing BTS footage from in the US) have been campaigning for idols to promote with their natural skin tone, but compare this to your observation and it’s the opposite. It really shows just how far society has changed within the last decade, but there’s still so many harmful standards and “compulsory” ideals that are pushed onto people to fit society’s “norms”. This is especially prevalent in countries who still hold very traditional beliefs and views in Latin America, Eastern Europe, remote communities in Africa, LEDCs and removed locations in Asia, and isolated Oceanic islands and settlements. I hope everyone in the future can grow up in a society where they aren’t judged for how they look, say, think, or feel, and that they’re free to express themselves.

Not related but love how most 4th gen idols are aware of these toxic standards ( women) and are slowly coming off of it and most girls (4th gen) girls feel confident in their bodies like olivia hye and ryujin

    • @jessicajessica4392
      @jessicajessica4392 3 роки тому +568

They are two isolated example, and are not representative of the entire 4h gen. Even Ryujin lost the weight she gained during the Wannabe era. In LOONA, while Olivia Hye is a bit thicker, other members are crazy thin. There is generally a double standard, for some idols it's okay to be a bit fuller, for others, they get harass as soon as they gain some weight. Overall, I feel like the toxic standards are the same really, the newly debuted idols still go through a crazy diet to debut, and many still go through surgery. For example, numerous pictures seem to show that Yuna from Itzy got a subtle nose surgery between Wannabe and In the Morning (Despite the fact that I have mostly seen great things about Yuna's visual since debut?) Other idols clearly got plastic surgery (Ex. Winter from Aespa) in order to debut. These toxic standards are still pretty much in place, and many are promoted by international fans who thin-shamed or fat-shamed idols constantly.
Also, the idea that an idol feels confident is really misleading. An idol can seem to be confident while being incredibly insecure / receiving internal pressure by their company to lose weight. To take another example from Itzy, Chae said in a video that she was terribly insecure about her physical appearance, despite singing about self-confidence (she slimmed down a lot for In the Morning). We really don't know what happens behind close door, and the truth is that idols' bodies are constantly talked about, imagine gaining a bit of weight unintentionally and have hundreds of comments saying: oh she looks thicker, even if these comments praise the idol, it may be very detrimental for their mental health (Ex. Comments saying: she looks so much better now she gained some weight, while the same idol was bullied for being on the thicker side few months earlier). On the other end, if an idol lose some weight, people are quick to talk about ED and calling them sick.

Hwasa of mamamoo is a good example of saying it's okay to have fat and be thicc and curvey or like sunmi and yoona from snsd to be normally and healthy thin. Can i please say something, that i need to get off my chest:
I see kpop fans (particuraly international) always complaining about how strict and high Koreas body standards are, and obviously i agree with the fact that South Korea has incredibly dangerourse and borderline fatal beauty standards that need to be achieved just to be even taken seriously in the Korean music industry, but sometimes i feel like this also has an impact on kpop fans themselves. I mean look at all the young and even teenage (really anyone) kpop stans who are constantly being reminded that being under 49kg is healthy regardless of height. It’s impacted them. Of course it has, even if you say it’s wrong and they agree, subconsiously it’s a stament in there mind that Koreas standards are what are really acceptable. And i see a seemingly subconsiouce rise in kpop stans comment on idols bodys and how “thick” they are - which obviously stems from insecureity. Although you might argue that being under 49kg is healthy for certain heights, IT IS STILL THIN. Most womean are between 45-70 kg in the west, and don’t bullshit me by saying “they just have that natrual frame” because you can lean towards a certain body type but no one is that thin without whatching what they eat. Yes idols like Lisa and Rose (blackpink) have “fast metabalisims” exist but you need to understand that ALL idols are extremely skinny. I hate seeing comments like “Hwassa is so thick” or “Jisoo is so thick” or “Ryujin is so thick” or “Allie is so thick” and i know you mean it as aa compliment but it’s actually not becauause it implys the absoloutly FALSE narrative that these womean arn’t skinny. When it so obvious they are. International kpop stans have the. EXACT same body standards as Korean fans, they just don’t take it as seriously. There is litterlay no overweight idol. The heaviest female idol is; 59kg that is not heavy at all despite what your standards are, and even if this idol wasn’t tall it still wouldn’t be heavy it would just be average. I literlay couldn’t find the weight of the heaviest male idol because they’v all lost so much weight. I just want you to understand that setting idols bodys as your standards is a little bit toxic because there unrealistic no matter what you think. Look at them - look at them properly are they fat?! are they thick?! no there not. There all thin and just because an idol eats normally dosn’t make them not skinny. Change your standards Korea, Change your standards kpop stans

The thing is, if your body is building muscles is because you need them, and you show your organism that you need muscles by doing strength exercises or activities that require strength, like dancing. So, if your OWN BODY is using energy to create muscles is because it felt it was NECESSARY for your health. People (and especially idols, who have this crazy routine of performances and dancins and training, along with not enough time to take care of themselves) really shouldn't try to get rid of any lean body mass.

Ever since I was a teenager, I really wanted to undergo plastic surgery to improve my appearance. I hated my fugly self back then but the surgery cost is out of my budget so I became depressed.
Then the pandemic happened and the quarantine was put in place in 2020 until now. As I have no outdoor activities, I started to practice skincare and opt for a healthy diet. Voila, 2021 changed me into someone new (you can see before-after on my YT banner). Even my sister was taken aback after seeing how much I've changed. Can't wait to go back outside and show my glow ups to other coworkers lol
So, is beauty worth it? All of my yes. But is surgery worth it? I guess no since there are plenty of healthier, non-invasive, and much MUCH cheaper option to glow yourself up.

The problem with plastic surgery in the kpop community is that most of them lie that they never done it. I am pretty sure 98% has gotten some kind of surgery but they are still sold as ' natural beauty' . They also don't do it because they want to but because their agency encourages them to and they obviously want to become famous so they do it. It creates a wrong picture of how people look natural and is expecially toxic for the self esteem of many young teenagers. If I was an idol and gotten surgery and I knew that many people see me as a role model I would feel really guilty for guilt dripping them into believing I am born this way .

When someone being natural, the society judge them for not being classified as beauty standard or even bash their looks.
But when someone get something done so that they achieved what the society called as beauty standards, they still get bashed for being "unnatural"
conclussion: The society is the main problem. Our society need to remember that human aren't factory product that can get measured into certain standards. It's not like parents can control how their babies will born according to beauty standards.
Why can't we just normalize human being human, all colors are beautiful, all size and shapes are beautiful. Being beautiful naturally is great, getting something done is also great. People look the most beautiful when they're happy and being beautiful human being. That's it.
Word will be much in peace when society no longer over judgemental on this. We need more good hearts than just a good looks. ^^

There is something that people don't know, and many of East Asians have naturally white skin. So 10-20 years ago, tanning was the standard of beauty. Like Lee Hyori. It is not unnatural, but it also feels like correcting the original tone, so it does not look very negative from the perspective of Koreans.
'Asians natural tone is never be white' that is also your stereotype.

While i am super happy for the idols who are challenging and creating more ideal types -- it is STLL a standard to be moving towards. ie. i am happy if they can embrace their natural skin tone, if it is pale or dark -- but if you are constantly tanning to fit the "healthy sexy" (which is a weird description on its own) then that's also problematic? It's still trying to fit your body to a trending skin tone and that is Not self love. Same with body type. Of cos as a celeb u can't just do whatever u want as your image is currency, but I hope ppl will be the ideal version of themselves, which is the range that they most naturally fall in, that's different for everybody. Exercise and some dietary adjustments may be necessary but still enough energy for the day and a huge variety of nutrient sources! Forcing someone to be "thick" (which in kpop usually just means slim curvy and not really actually an amazingly beautiful thick body -- cos ppl who are actually thicker naturally and look gorgeous still get bullied for it cos they aren't "sexy" in that curvy manner, which is also a problem) or making everyone skeletons is overall just really unsustainable for the idols and introduces a million new insecurities to young fans

Dara who was conventionally attractive got really weird and out of the box hairstyles, and it worked. It was unheard of for a gg back then to be so unconventionally attractive. They may have gone through several procedures to look the way they look and spent a lot of time for skin care. We really don‘t need to do that to be beautiful. You definitely are enough.

I haven't seen people talk about this, but I feel like the clothes idols wear really aren't flattering for the majority of the bodies those same idols have. They are forced into clothing that purposely makes non-skinny idols look not as nice in those outfits, even if they are under 50kg, but if you were to see those same idols in their regular clothes, maybe on airports or dance practices you would see that they are much much skinnier than what they appear to be in their stage outfits, and that makes me really sad. And, also, from a different perspective, the idols that do look good in stage outfits often look worryingly thin in normal clothes, often times because they starve themselves to look good on the stage. So sad :(
