To the mother who spoke in this interview: I HOPE your son recovers with no emotional or mental issues, but I wouldn’t count on it. Due to a trauma my beloved grandson suffered at age two, our family is on a long road to help him recover from PTSD and behavioral problems. Be watchful, and if necessary, get help for him. He may not remember the specifics of the event, but it likely did affect him. My heart goes out to him and all victims of senseless shootings and other violence.

I feel exactly the same. I’m exhausted worrying that a ball game or a picnic or a school day is going to turn into the latest mass casualty event. Practically speaking, what are we to do when there is no near term solution? Our legislators have no appetite for this major issue - at best they pass narrow & compromised legislation that gives them enough cover to look as if they are serious about this issue. In my opinion - when Sandyhook didn’t result in any dramatic change, I figured nothing would. And we’ve now had so many of these events that it’s difficult to remember them all. That is a sad state of affairs.

It boils down to money. The NRA pays big bucks to make sure guns are available to anyone. And not just hand guns. They want to have AR15's available to ANYONE. Those are weapons of war, designed to destroy as many bodies as possible, in the shortest time possible.

    • @belkise1373
      @belkise1373 2 роки тому +26

We must change the purpose of the fight and change the weapon too. Money can be our weapon for change. We can boycott a few things; close our checking accounts with big banks and go to smaller local banks, let's stay home, go to work, go home and stay home, only shop for necessities and use mom n pop buz, no trips to the mall, no movie theatres, no dinners; cuz politics happens at the local level; if we pull our money from local economy, that means less sales tax, that means less money for the city; we pressure them to come to the table. We can even collectively default on our utility bills and keep paying them late. I know other countries have practiced these boycotts, they stayed at home, they didn't even turn the light son, they darkened their communities to protest; don't mean strikes, but I mean putting pressure on the local economy.

She's saying what every sensible person thinks about the laws, politics, and assault rifles.
"He didn't break any laws until he started shooting." That's going to be etched in my brain from now on, because that's true of every mass shooter. They're all "responsible, legal gun owners," until they're not, and then it's too late to say they should have been flagged, to talk about their mental health problems, the failures of law enforcement, or their social media footprints which foretold their actions yet nobody did anything about it, and the endless string of other excuses for not doing what needs to be done--banning assault rifles from civilian ownership.
These assault rifles aren't target, sport, or defensive weapons. They're designed for killing as many people, as quickly as possible, in a battle of soldiers against soldiers, not lunatics against defenseless, innocent people practicing their Constitutional right to freedom of assembly.

He was there and he knows what happened but doesn't know what to call it yet. It is probably his first experience with death of any kind so it will take a while till he asks all the questions he needs answered. The kid who ran with his parents needs to know why his family ran, and why everyone else ran, Both need to know how the sounds (of gunfire and of screaming) connect to the results of that day. They are having feelings and emotions but need more words to describe what those are. They need patient, caring people who are listening to them and are there to answer their questions at a childs pace, They need reassurance that even though very bad things happened that day, the entire world did not change but someparts are gone. Coming to terms with a bad event is a requirement that is not dependent on age. The adults too will need lots of care as they sort this all out and figure out what comes next in their lives. BTW, mom and dad didn't abandon the boy. They were taken away, and dad gave his last breath to protect his son.

The story of how her brave father, a physician, ran toward the chaos and victims when normal instincts say to run is the ultimate in temperance, self control of faculties that supersede all the normal responses. When you compare that to what she was feeling that he was possibly also feeling but was able to switch all personal feelings off to tend to injured. He reigned all his emotions in to perform his job, I find this amazing, and that little 8 year old might live they say because of this. He is still critical. Wow I am starting nursing school in August and I wonder if I will be transformed in my mind. They say nurses don’t take breaks to pee. Why are gun laws not the same in every state? If it is a constitutional right, why is it not a federal issue? The US military has tighter regulations with firearms than the civilian laws in most states? That should e the standard and minimal experience level to even qualify for ownership.Americans are not willing to give up their weapons, obviously there are far too many already out in the world in the very hands which they do not rightfully belong or deserve to have such a right. An unarmed society is a more peaceful society.

Because it's in the Bill of Rights that citizens are permitted to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. The Bill of Rights is different from the Constitution, the Constitution is Federal, the Bill of Rights is State. That's just how it was set up. The Founding Fathers did Not want big government, that's why they left certain laws up to the individual States.
An unarmed society is Not more peaceful, murderers use other things to do their crimes with, trucks/cars, knives, /swords, bombs, religion.

It is difficult to imagine an unarmed society if one has never experienced it firsthand.I am an American living in Canada,so I do know and can honestly say you are wrong in your flawed logic. The ownership of lethal force should not be entrusted to the common citizen for the detriment of the rest of society.Laws are the rule of the land, not vigilance or a need to protect from a tyrannical government, the guns did n`t help then and they won`t help in the future. The laws need to hold the same meaning in all states without exception, and they should carry maximum penalty with 3 strikes and zero tolerance for possible convictions.Lawful citizens should have access if they insist on ownership, personal liability insurance and licencing through a federal agency database could monitor information in any state in real time to potentially take them out of the wrong hands.Anything at this point would help.

@@lisar.3067 It used to e that everyone worked together toward a common goal and our differences were merely of opinion and not fundamentally skewed and polarized.
America was great from the unity and love for our fellow human and a love of the freedom this country was founded on.It is clear that this issue has gotten out of control and deadly to the general public.
Are our personal rights more important than the rights of society as a whole?
If there was responsible ownership this would n`t be an issue.Lethal force is not something the common citizen should need, but have been convinced somehow that it is a solution, not a responsibility,a liability or a privilege.
America was built on gun culture,so it is also up to America to set the standard and lead from example,to show the world that there is a conscientious society willing to do what is necessary to protect it`s citizens without arrogance or ignorance to the problem at hand.
Politicians make guns deadly, allowing a proliferation of legal firearms to exist and not cracking down or doing nothing at all,too afraid to take action for the right reasons.Giving the NRA so much political power is the result of manufacturers funding them and creating a domestic market available on an international scale. The US produces an estimated 90% of the weapons distributed globally.Selling arms has always been an American interest. Why would the government want change if it meant losing money?
Who is responsible for this in the first place?
It all starts with the individual opening their eyes to the problem on a personal level, and learning to cope without resorting to violence or needing to feel protected or just because they can when other options exist. It is selfishness that keeps things the way they are and make matters worse.

I know HP very well; I grew up on the north shore, my younger brother lives there. I dated a lady who owned a clothing store on that very street. Michael Jordan is still trying to get rid of his albatross estate there. It is a very nice, upscale community. When I saw the headline about a shooting in a suburb of Chicago, I was absolutely stunned it was HP. Know we will get have copy cats in the future. There are like 18 million AR style rifles in homes now and even if a ban were instituted (which by the way, if like the prior ban would not include a buy back, just will apply to new sales), that will not do anything to reduce this violence. A forced buy back will be ignored by a substantial portion of otherwise law-abiding citizens. People with ill intent will of course not turn in their weapons. Plus, rifles of any type constitute a tiny fraction of mass shootings. The gun culture will not tolerate the least bit of gun control as they believe (not without reason) that when one law does not impact, then another will be instituted. Bad guys will not turn in their so-called “high capacity” magazines (“standard” capacity is about 15 rounds). The proverbial horse has left the barn.
