Forging a Small Folded Carving Axe

- I am happy with how this axe came out, but I will have to try the three piece axe again. This is the type of project that requires you to be comfortable forge welding without perfectly clean, flat mating surfaces. As seen in the video, I still have a lot to learn. Big thanks to Finn for the superb videography seen in the few very overexposed shaky clips. Also what a funny guy, go follow him on instagram @feathercapforge

Parabéns!!!
Man forging down that 1045 stock must have been a pain, but in the end it was worth it, awesome project!
Thanks. It wasn’t too bad, just a big hammer and a little work
Beautiful work. This turned out very unique and very nice design. Hopefully you get great use out of it for many years. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge on. Keep Making. God bless.
Keep up the good work man!
Thank you
This is cool! I think a folded ax build is just more interesting to watch than a drifted ax
They are a lot of fun to make for sure!
Awesome video man keep it up 💪 🔥 👍
Thank you
Awesome work! I love how the curves of the cheeks profile match perfectly 👌
Thanks
Excellent work man! Great outcome and should last a lifetime.
Thank you
Killer work, Liam! Nice axe!
Thanks!
Folded axes are inherently difficult to forge weld. I think if your gas forge got to hotter temps you’d have an easier time of it. Another option is to use a solid fuel forge to get large masses of steel to forge welding temperatures.
Mild steel is difficult to forge weld together and is much more finicky than say quality wrought iron, which you can get much hotter without burning. You’ve got the skills to forge weld, but maybe your gas forge doesn’t get hot enough. Hard to tell from the video the temp of your work. I struggle with folded axe eye welds and I use a coke forge. Usually have to start a new piece at least once for every other axe I make. Forge welding the eye is difficult.
You charging that leaf on 110v?
220 now
@@LiamJPenn alot more fun to drive than I thought it would be. I wish the range was a little better.
Sweet axe also ha ha.
What was the size of mild steel and 1045 you used ?
I think the starting mild steel was 8”x2”x1/2” 1045 was maybe 3” of 2” round. How much material you need just depends on the size of the axe and how much material will be lost during the process. I kinda just eyeball most things
