  • We arrived at the airport around 12pm and walked to terminal two, as that is where you get the bus to terminal four. We decided to get some lunch at a place called “Heavenly Wang”. We both ordered a rice and fish dish with peanuts and spicy sauce. It was pretty good and came to $15. The sauce was more sweet than spicy though… We then took the bus to terminal four. Once at terminal four we went through immigration and security. It’s weird how every country's airport policies are different… this airport did NOT care about your liquids. I had both of our boarding passes on my phone, so it was a bit awkward going through customs and security. Once inside the terminal we had a Tiger beer to use up the last of our Singapore dollars, which cost $16 each! We spent our last $8 at the 711 and got a Pocari Sweat and a mint flavoured coffee. Then we sat at our boarding gate until our boarding time of 2:05… but that long passed. Our flight was delayed one hour, then another, then a third hour…. We eventually boarded, but with my anxiety incredibly high, as we had a three hour layover in Bangkok and that was now completely gone…. Our plane then drove around the airport for over twenty five minutes and I was having almost a complete mental breakdown. We could have stayed at the hotspring footbath in Singapore afterall and soaked our feet properly….
Our flight was very uneventful. We both had aisle seats across from one another. We landed at 5:45pm, and our flight to MYSTERY COUNTRY left at 6:00pm (we didn’t realise that there had been a one hour time change between Singapore and Thailand). We had to take our shoes off in security and I hadn’t brought socks, so I schlepped my way through security barefooted… which is a huge trigger for me as I have an irrational fear of loose hair (long story).
We sat for a brief while in the boarding area as our flight boarded at 6:15 now. We boarded the plane by bus and sat together. We spent the flight filling out immigration paperwork and barely had time to complete it before landing in our next country….The flight was only one hour long.
When we arrived in the arrivals hall, most people went to the right to get a visa on arrival, but we had applied online so we went left and straight through immigration. It was a very short wait (two people ahead of us). I took longer for the man to stamp us in then the wait in line was. We then walked through customs, the man at customs told us to go grab our bags first, but we only had tiny school kid sized backpacks with us and he seemed genuinely shocked. We each packed very little, carrying only 2 lbs bag each and our fanny packs with the important stuff.
We then walked through to the arrival area and I immediately saw a sign that said “James Standish” (I don’t know why they used his name as I booked everything in my name haaaa). Our driver was super friendly and made small talk. We were so tired, as it was past our bedtime (9:30). The airport was brand new and had only been open three days!!!! The driver explained that locals had been showing up at the airport in huge packs to see it! We saw quite a few of these “airport tourists” on our way to our accommodation. When I came to see Siem Reap in 2011, I remember the airport being much smaller and almost completely outdoors. The drive to our accommodation took about one hour, there wasn’t much to see as it was dark outside, but I did see quite a few youths hanging out along the road with motorcycles and beers!
We arrived at our hotel, “Indochine D’Angkor” and checked in. We owed $116 USD and $29 for the airport pick up. A nice young man (does that make me sound old, I just said “youths” too….) showed us our room. It was after 10:30 pm so we crashed pretty much right away.
