Tbh, this is probably the unpopular opinion but I will make my kids pay rent after they’re 18. Definitely not the full amount of money, but at least they’ll pay the water bill etc.
In my culture parents and kids (and sometimes grandparents) all live together in the same house... a kid moving out is actually seen as a bad thing or a sign that you are a bad parent...
In Poland kids do move out of the house, but money is never allowed to enter the family - that means, that your family home isn't a 3-star hotel&restaurant that charges everyone, but instead it's a nice ,,harbour" for you to dock to when you need a break from life. We don't earn money just to earn money, but because we want us and our family to be happy. Doing something to your family member that will make them pay you (and not a symbolic amount) or make you gain economically on their cost here either means they've done something really messed up, or you're just the scumiest person imaginable.
me, an italian, where the culture is living with your parents for free even til you're 30, and then when you move out and get your own place you help your parents with rent and money or take them to live with you
My father's parents used to do this. My father legitimately just walked off to his girlfriend's house and moved out because he couldn't pay them anymore. They kept the money, he got a job.
Parent when their son is 18: ,,Sir, your rent is due 2 months, I'm afraid to say our cooperation has ended. You have 24 hours to pack your bags and move out" Son when his parents are 60: ,,Excuse me madame, I'm an engineer, not a daycare employee. I don't offer services in form of taking care of erderly."
My mum charges me rent, the second I got my job when I finished school at 17, I had to financially contribute to the household, mind you this was when our dad was still paying fat stacks to my mum for child support
My experience with this is my mother supported me when I went to a local community college, I also had a part time job at the time. She did not charge me rent until I quit college and got a full-time job and even then it was stupid low compared to other places in the city. I don't feel she did me dirty in any way. I have now moved out because I wanted to, and thats fine with her. I think its a case by case thing 🤷♂️🤷♀️
When my daughter is old enough to get a job, she's going to apply for one. It's important for kids to learn how to be financially independent. I wouldn't go as far as charging her rent, but I will expect her to buy the things she wants ( I will obviously provide the necessities) so she understands and appreciates them more, and how rewarding it is to work toward her goals.
Yes, I think it's better to encourage kids to start working or teach them some other stuff, like DIY, basic car knowledge, darning, cooking and etc. than just force them to find a job and pay the rent. Making children pay the rent makes them feel like family home is just a 3-star hotel&restaurant that won't accept them without money.
Because rent is an incentive to move why stay with my parents paying rent, living under their rules when you can pay the same amount to live in your own place under your own rules and when you do move out you will know how rent works
i think it's one of those 50/50 debates where both have good pros but bad cons paying rent: pros - the responsibility of your own money + sense of adult life cons - spending money + may just have shitty parents not paying rent: pros - not spending money + being more financially in control cons: parents may actually need it + especially as they get older and it gets more difficult for them to take care of themselves
this is just sad that their kids are now gonna have to get money from somewhere, to give their parents money to live in *THEIR* house... while they have to also search for another apartment to live... it's just 2x money they have to spend... i don't see them having any money at last.
Yep. Wanna needlessly charge rent, then don’t be surprised if they have even more difficulty saving up to move out! I don’t wanna see anymore of these parents complaining that their kids still live with them.
It isn't 2x the money, you don't pay rent on an apartment unless you are living there. Once you move out of your parents house, they won't be charging you. Think of it as you getting to live in a nice place, get utilities paid for, internet and cable, laundry and mostly free meals all for 1/3 of the price that it would cost you do it on your own. So you contribute to your household, and still have lots left to spend/save.
My parents threatened to make me pay rent when I was twelve because I was forgetting to do chores, and I knew they weren’t serious because I had no way to make money and as a forgetful person it’s not like I can magically remember to do chores. If your parents are going to charge you rent, it shouldn’t be the moment you’re eighteen and instead when you’re out of highschool
I have never once heard of a family sharing money, I dont know if that is normal and my family didnt do it. I lived in a farm and in exchange for staying after 18 I had to take full care of horses
Here its really common to live with your parents and they dont charge rent for it. It makes life easier for the child and the parents get to spend more time with them my cousin who got married recently still lives with his parents But i guess it isn't really that common in other places
The people tweeting the parents are just doing it for the money and out of greed are in my opinion really out of touch with a big part of the world. A lot of kids have to start working very early to make sure the family has even enough money to live.
I started working when I was 14, I was allowed to keep 10 each paycheck and my parents got the rest. It's not a new thing to help contribute to the family well being. We need to go back to the character building traditions in this country.
My mum normally uses the threat of not paying rent in a way to get me to do a task not sure if she’ll make good on that threat, all I can no fit now is just contribute to the household and help out As of now I’m charged rent per week at the going price of rent in Sydney
I dont think its outrageous I think yea help your parents a little but forcing rent or they become homeless is wrong especially if they don't have a job or aren't able to get one at the moment if their job doesn't pay well then I feel like thats also wrong cause yknow that's like taking all they have
Well honey, that’s reality. Just like when you turn 18 and any crime you commit you can be charged as an adult, you’re parents charging you rent won’t be any different. You’re of legal age technically, so whatever your parents choose to do with you is legal. If you can’t handle taking care of yourself by 18, then you need to figure it out quick. Not everything will be handed to you just because you’re having a hard time. The world doesn’t give af.
@@anonnnymousthegreat don’t call anybody honey dumbass. They’re not your child. And if someone is having a hard time do what you can to give to them. Why would you force a college student (most likely in these cases) to pay you money when they probably can’t get a job
_I guess it really depends on how the parents raised the kid, in my opinion, If there is a strong bond with the child and parent, giving money to the parents isn't that bad because they helped provide and care for you for so many years. Although, if the parent was always abusive and annoying, the child would rather move out and not be involved with their family. Thats the reason why some people are heated and mad about this topic because they probably don't have the best connection with their parents :-)_
Or how mature the child is. Too many 18-25yos these days expect a handout and to be coddled because of society painting a picture of if a parent does anything to their child that makes the child percieve it as a punishment/abuse/neglect that they are in the wrong. When really the parents in this type of situation is just showing their adult children reality of being an adult.
I pay my own tuition & textbooks. My parents are going to try asking me for $25 to help with rent soon since my brother is getting tossed around with his job. It sucks. Because sometimes I need a small amount for me to buy food from school during the day.
@@user-gt6oh5jx6l it started off for me 200 each paycheck, totalling 400 a month. Went up to 500 a month and my parents used it to fund their love of weed. In Canada it's legal
I'm currently living in my parent's house so as to "take care of it" while they're overseas for the year. I'm expected to pay the house costs, and of course my own expenses including food. My dad calculated the average of what it costs to live here, and I think it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do-- after all, I am profiting from everything being ready for me to use.
Exactly! Many people here aren’t even considering anything. For all of these people, it’s one way or the high way. I think paying rent is perfectly reasonable. Especially when you can get a job at the age of 16 in many places.
I am 18 and still in high school. Due to my late summer birthday I am old for my grade. My birthday was one day before school started. Just because I am 18 does not mean I can financially support myself.
i don't think so. and 20 bucks is too much, lol. my parents barely give me 10 bucks for monthly pockey money, lol. especially if your child has no job. but if your chile has a wealthy job, i think it's responsibility for them to pay. parrnts give brith to their child, now it's their responsibility to raise their children make them a good person. then when the children grow up, get a job, it's their responsibility to take care of their parents, the ones who gave them life, the once who raised them. that's me and my parents perception. my parents let me live free, they give me free food, wi fi, room and privacy. but of course i have to read and do some chores. then when i'll have a job, i'll move in an another house wity my parents and take care of them.
I mean, I would charge a percentage of rent (to get them used to the idea of needing to pay bills in the future, thus needing to save for that) No more than $50/month. I could either save that money for them later on when they show that they can be responsible or use part of it for actual rent if there's some sort of job loss in the family (maybe the second one because I'm traumatized by a situation that happened like that in my childhood and we were without power for a month). A small percentage doesn't hurt them or their budget, but gets them used to the idea that they'll need to set aside money in the future. People could do that or make them pay for a subscription (like Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, etc, whatever they watch the most). Subscriptions add up, and since they average around $3-$20/month they're perfect for teaching about bills. TL;DR Working kids shouldn't need to pay for a whole rent since they typically only get hired working minimum wage, they should be charged a small percentage or pay for a subscription to be taught the importance of saving money and paying bills in the future.
I agree with you here. The whole idea of asking them for a small amount of money as a rent and you'll give it back when they'll need it is absolutely *perfect*
well my parents told me that either i can go to college and actually be in school doing something and my parents wont charge me rent, but if I decide to just not go to school and just to sit around and play video games then my parents will charge rent because in some cases like my parents they are just trying to help me realize what the real worlds like.
I was actually paying my parents some money as a "rent". I can't remember how much excatly but it was around 20 pounds a week. I was getting paid from college so I had the money and since I moved out and need to pay 100 pounds a week to my landlord I wish I stayed longer with them. My parents taught me that food and having a roof is not going to be free if I move out and that I should be getting ready for the rent. I was 16 at the time. I am thankful to them for teaching me that lesson about being independent.
In my opinion, both sides are right. It depends, if your parents need the money and you are not fully prepared to move out you should give them at least a little money, but if they don’t need the money they are completely wrong for forcing you to pay rent
It depends for me. If it's a 30 year old in my basement is charge rent so when he does move out he'd be used to getting charged rent. Because 30 is a reasonable time to have a job
Now i question why couples with children live with the husband/wifes parents. Listen, some people just dont have money lol, bc we all know that *money doesn't grow on trees* . You can say that if your a landlord, not a parent.
@@honeyboohoo That's true but some people can try to get a job. I want to be a youtuber but I'm going to have a job until I can make a living doing that. There's a lot of people that just live with their parents and don't have a job at like 30
I think that the principle that the parents are trying to teach is really usefull. They shouldnt keep the money tho, when the kid moves out they should get all the money back for when they need it.

My experience with this is my mother supported me when I went to a local community college, I also had a part time job at the time. She did not charge me rent until I quit college and got a full-time job and even then it was stupid low compared to other places in the city. I don't feel she did me dirty in any way.
Rent defeats the purpose of having them be INDEPENDENT HOW THEY GONNA MOVE OUT IF YOU MAKE THEM PAY RENT
Because rent is an incentive to move why stay with my parents paying rent, living under their rules when you can pay the same amount to live in your own place under your own rules and when you do move out you will know how rent works

i think it's one of those 50/50 debates where both have good pros but bad cons
paying rent:
pros - the responsibility of your own money + sense of adult life
cons - spending money + may just have shitty parents
not paying rent:
pros - not spending money + being more financially in control
cons: parents may actually need it + especially as they get older and it gets more difficult for them to take care of themselves
this is just sad that their kids are now gonna have to get money from somewhere, to give their parents money to live in *THEIR* house... while they have to also search for another apartment to live... it's just 2x money they have to spend... i don't see them having any money at last.
Yep. Wanna needlessly charge rent, then don’t be surprised if they have even more difficulty saving up to move out! I don’t wanna see anymore of these parents complaining that their kids still live with them.
I only make $164 a week and my mom wants me to pay rent ROFL
They would be lucky enough to have a job that pays well.
All they’re doing is making their children slowly not like them lol.
The day I turned 16 I got told “Get a job or you are getting kicked out”
I have never once heard of a family sharing money, I dont know if that is normal and my family didnt do it.

Just because I am 18 does not mean I can financially support myself.
My mom was charging my sister rent but tbh my sister deserved it, she made our house living hell
I think charging them a small amount is ok, so they can learn to get the money on time. Like 20 bucks or smth
i don't think so. and 20 bucks is too much, lol. my parents barely give me 10 bucks for monthly pockey money, lol. especially if your child has no job. but if your chile has a wealthy job, i think it's responsibility for them to pay. parrnts give brith to their child, now it's their responsibility to raise their children make them a good person. then when the children grow up, get a job, it's their responsibility to take care of their parents, the ones who gave them life, the once who raised them. that's me and my parents perception. my parents let me live free, they give me free food, wi fi, room and privacy. but of course i have to read and do some chores. then when i'll have a job, i'll move in an another house wity my parents and take care of them.

@Obstratics yeah no lmao
@Obstratics ????

The Parents: *_Aight cough it up_*
well my parents told me that either i can go to college and actually be in school doing something and my parents wont charge me rent, but if I decide to just not go to school and just to sit around and play video games then my parents will charge rent because in some cases like my parents they are just trying to help me realize what the real worlds like.
If i get charged rent my stupid butt is going to be homeless in 1 month
I mean, since it’s your parents they will probably make it a lot cheaper
bruh have these people heard of depression...
"I dont think youre ready for english dude"🤣🤣🤣
