Same here. The rest of his work is pretty ordinary. I know that upsets some people, but there is nothing else he does that reaches the guitar talent level displayed on Cream albums.
I kinda like his works with Yardbirds and John Mayall too. But the years with Cream was his musical peak. Pretty much all things he's done after Blind Faith bores me.
Cream loved the long jam, especially live. Their record label wanted some singles and they obliged with some incredible songs ike this, Badge, White Room, Sunshine of Your Love, Strange Brew, etc balanced against Crossroads, Spoonful, Born Under a Bad Sign, etc.....awesome power trio!!
When you said, "I try to figure out what the lyrics and music mean to me" at the outset here, I began laughing. Great set up for the "tiny purple fishes"!! Yeah, try "Strange Brew" next....
This takes me back to high school. Cream was considered an "underground" group in some quarters - which meant they were not played on AM radio. Now Clapton is very much in the mainstream, and FM radio is accessible to everyone. Wonderful song.
"SWLABR", very psychedelic lyrics and awesome music. Sadly, another too short song. Also "Crossroads" live from their Wheels of Fire album. A great opening riff and one of Claptons great guitar solos.
Daniel, you often request the songs that are off the mainstream path, and for good reason. It lets us actually hear music we may not have heard ourselves in decades. And Cream is no exception. You did "White Room" seven months ago, a megahit. Sometimes the greatest hits exist for a reason. They ARE the best songs. It's a low-hanging fruit, but I just would love to see your reaction to "Sunshine Of Your Love", just for the riff. It's in "Aqualung" territory, if not better.
I first heard this song done by a high school band. I went out and bought the album the next day. Still one of my faves. That same band did a cover of Queen's "Dragon Attack". Another overlooked gem. You might want to check that one out.
Daniel , enjoy your channel. great to see great music ,.Being 68 yo ive seen alot of the talent your present,I have seen more live concerts than i can remember. My thanks to you and your Dad.Bless you and family.
Power 60’s group Clapton Baker and Bruce or Eric Ginger and Jack..They also teamed up with Steve Winwood to form Blind Faith for one album which is excellent.
Thank you for your reaction to this great song, Daniel! Didn't you just love the LP cover? You don't get artwork like that these days! "Strange Brew" has to be your next Cream song to react to. You mentioned weird songs, so here are a few for you to try out some day! "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson, "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" by Dr. Hook, "Magneto and Titanium Man" by Wings, "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Walk Off The Earth, "Superman's Song" by Crash Test Dummies, "Friends of Mr. Cairo" by Jon and Vangelis and "Atlantis" by Donovan! Hopefully you can get to at least one of them some day!

I was 13 in 1967 and my brother had just come back from the record store in San Jose Ca. He had bought a few 45 rpm discs that day by Jimi, Spencer Davis, J Airplane, Moby Grape and this. Back then you could sit in a booth with very cheap headphones and preview a record before buying it. Because they would only you do this with 4 heSo we sat down to listen to all of them. At the time I was listening to the usual Beatles, Stone and Monkees and all the other stuff on KLIV and KYA. This was the last one he put on. And the only one he did not explain before the needle dropped. Although all of them are favorites to this day this is the one I had to hear again. And again.....I had not taken Acid yet but this was one of the things that made me want to! And I did! Again and again..... I will play this at my brothers funeral if he gets there first. Thank you Terry
So back in the day (the 60s) Stereo records were a dollar more than its mono counterpart, so producers wanted you to be able to tell that that dollar was worth it, by wildly swinging the instruments to either ear. Sometimes purposeful, but most often a fad. That died down in the early 70s and then stereo was used to try and create how the band would sound in a typical placement on the stage with YOUR viewpoint (the listener) being the best seat in the house. Dead center a few rows back. That's called "imaging" and is probably the most important measure of good speakers (or headphones) and audio components
This was 1967. The production, musicianship and feel of this song was “magical” back then. I was 15 and a young guitar player, who had just found something that was unique and “not the Beatles”. Everybody loved the Beatles, but I loved the underground and the alternative groups.
Daniel, it's been a few minutes since you did a Doors' song. Don't know if it's that weird (Morrison weird?) but The Soft Parade could be what you're looking for. An eight minute progressive, jazzy, acid rock and pop influenced song that incorporates stream of consciousness lyrics with a crooner(lounge lizard) style that only a young Jim Morrison could do. What else do you want?
"Disraeli Gears". Probably one of the greatest albums ever produced. I bought it in Nashville, Tennessee in 1968. Just sayin', GREAT choice and reaction.
I always loved how both this song and Home at Last by Steely Dan harken back to Homer. There's just something about a well crafted rock song singing about ancient mythology I absolutely love.
I used to have this album back in the late 60s, and we played all of the songs on it until we knew every lyric, and note played. We had a little "garage Band" back then, just like millions of other teens. What a time to grow up. "Tiny purple fishes, run laughing through your fingers..." Yes this was also the start of the drug culture too. Lots of LSD and other mind altering drugs. Just look at the album cover art. Most Bands had pretty similar album art on their covers. You have to love "Eric Clapton" (guitar/vocals) "Jack Bruce" (Bass/Vocals) and "Ginger Baker" (Drums). Only the great Eric Clapton is still alive. All we in their early 20s Back in 1967. The best music era ever. The 60s and 70s. Thanks
Daniel, you want to know what other weird songs to discover? Try Strange Band by Family. They were a prog rock band from late 60s/early 70s, very innovative in the use of instruments and instrumentation but largely forgotten today. It's weird but it's still a toe tapper
I always liked the song As You Said. Which doesn't sound like a typical Cream song with Jack doing his thing on cello. But you may enjoy Those Were The Days, Deserted Cities of the Heart, or We're Going Wrong.
Eric Clapton said the guitar sequence was inspired by "Summer In The City" by The Loving Spoonful!!! Listen to it and you'll hear what Clapton was doing .
Power Blues meets psychedelia. Heavy man, heavvvy. Ps, "Sirens on the rooftops wailing, but there's no ship sailing..." Broadway Melody of 1974 (The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway)
I just considered how long you have been dethstrok 9 and it seems so wrong to me that you haven't been promoted to dethstrok 10 by now. You need to take a meeting.
If you want weird anything off Captain Beefheart's album Trout Mask Replica will fit the bill. "Ella Guru" and "Neon Mete Dream of a Octofish" (I'm 95% sure that is the correct spelling on the album) would be a good place to start.

Hi Daniel. Great song but I recommend you the live version from ' live cream volume II '. It's in a little bit more slower pace but really raw and in your face. Bruce s Bass and singing, Claptons guitar and Bakers drums are sheer amazing here.
'Ole Audiophile here, I was 12 years old when this was released. My sister didn't like a couple of her birthday presents, she was six years older. Imagine a twelve-year-old mind being totally inspired by this group & this album... It's no wonder I was warped enough to venture toward audiophilia.
First song on side 2 of the first album I ever bought (for $3.19). Unusual for lyrics being free verse (no rhyming). Clapton heavily into his wah-wah pedal at the time. Still love Cream.
Disraeli Gears .... a Desert Island Disc.
This is one of THE great rock albums.
It really is
Cream was the first Supergroup. Swlabr is one of their greatest. It's the song right after this one on Disraeli Gears.
SWLABR for sure doesn't get nearly enough love.
The great Jack Bruce, vocals and bass ❤️
Now he should try Politician another great tune that shows the talents of Jack Bruce.
@@michaelbochnia5686 I concur 😁
I didn’t know what a Wah-Wah pedal was until I heard this song. Cream is the only Eric Clapton I listen to.
I disagree, Blind Faith is the 'listen to' Eric Clapton album.

I had a roommate that played live Cream volume 2 nonstop
So happy you did this one. Other reactors seem to leave this one behind.
An excellent choice, this is my favorite Cream song, so mythic, romantic and psychedelic.

Hello
Laurie Anderson "O'Superman".
This takes me back to high school. Cream was considered an "underground" group in some quarters - which meant they were not played on AM radio. Now Clapton is very much in the mainstream, and FM radio is accessible to everyone. Wonderful song.
Next up from this album should be Strange Brew- and I agree with @eddie willers, a true Desert Island classic ✌🏻
"SWLABR", very psychedelic lyrics and awesome music. Sadly, another too short song. Also "Crossroads" live from their Wheels of Fire album. A great opening riff and one of Claptons great guitar solos.
It is amazing how much great music Cream made in just a couple of years.
This is high up in my favorite Cream songs. I'm glad you found it!
Oh yeah. I am back in high school all of a sudden. Classic number. You have really good taste, DS9. Try "Sunshine of Your Love".
