I love the footage and god bless you for rendering this video to 4k for us to see
Thank you, Ryan!!
@@Filmboy24 I just came back from my local photography store and bought a pre-owned one (same model) bought in 1980! Kind of excited to go to new york, get some film, and test this out! Thank you!
@@PS4everROCKS That's awesome, Ryan! Good luck with it and have fun!!
Excellent video! Awesome results! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Jeffrey!!
It’s auto exposure looks like it did a good job. I’ve seen some amazingly good looking 50D super 8mm footage lately.
Thanks, Mike! I'm pretty happy with it all things considered :)
Great video Mike!
11-22mm is quite an odd choice. 11mm is way too tight in my opinion, especially indoors.
Thanks, Nisei!! I'm with you, there's so many others with much wider lenses. Not sure why or how they settled on 11.
Hi I was wondering how you converted your flim and where did you buy your flim?
I've gotten my fresh stock direct from Kodak, just call their customer service number if you're in the US or Canada. I process and scan everything myself. Scan is done on my MovieStuff scanners.
Excellent, Thanks ! ! !
Thank you, Cecil!!
If I put in batteries but no film cartridge, should the camera still make some sort of noise? I'm trying to test it without having to buy film first.
Yes, the camera should still operate without film.
Where there many or any super8 camera's made with metal bodies?
There were several but not nearly as many as plastic. My Bolex 150 and 155 Super are both metal, as is my Zenit Quarz. My little Minolta Pocket Z-8 and Yashica Electro-8 are both metal bodies. Still quite fragile though 🙃
Hey I have a Chinon 40 SM XL. Mine isn’t powering up though with batteries. I did see on the back there is a 6 volt battery input, does yours have that? And can you use that to try and power it up? I know it’s not the same camera but I wondered if yours had that as well since it’s the same brand
My Chinon 20P XL doesn't have that, however I have several other Chinon models that do. Yes, you can run them independently off that jack in lieu of the batteries. Give it a shot, sometimes that brings them back to life :)
@@Filmboy24 thanks for the help. For some reason my camera just started making noise one day and came back to life with batteries. Don’t know how but I’m not gonna question it haha. Thanks again!
4:30
Mike, you're saying it will measure from ISO 40 to 160 but it's actually 40 OR 160 (nothing in between). It depends on the exact position of the film speed pin in the camera but ISO 100 will probably be exposed as 160. Not a problem for negative film but underexposing reversal film is not what you want.
Yes, you're absolutely right! I probably should have mentioned that if shooting 100D in this camera, you really should tape the BLC button down (I've done it several times). Thanks!!
Where do you purchase s-8 film?
Direct from Kodak (US & Canada) is the freshest and cheapest.
Hi! Do you know anything about the chinon 30af xl? I saw it recently in a store and was tempted to purchase, but I cant seen to find any videos on it!
I don't personally have one but I do know a little about them They have an Auto Focus (AF) mode along with manual focus, which is probably the most unique feature on a Super 8 camera. It has a 3:1 zoom (hence the 30 in the model number) and I believe it has exposure compensation (a dial to over/under expose), which is a really great feature. Now you're making me want one 😅
@@Filmboy24 wow thank you so much! Now I feel like I gotta buy it!
Just came home with 4 AA's and am POSITIVE about how they go in, and am getting nothing, including no check battery light. They work, as I then dropped 2 of them into my minty Yashica Electro 8 Macro. All good there. (Last time I used that was around 1990). Surprised at the fail of the Chinon, as battery terminals are minty, and camera is super clean. No question on battery direction. Do I need a film cartridge in this to get power? And what's the round nub below the lens?
That's a real bummer! You do not need a film cartridge in it for the camera to run. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast with these vintage electronics. Sometimes they simply fail (capacitors, circuit boards, etc.). You can try spraying some contact cleaner into the battery compartment. I've had a couple cameras come to life from doing this. Never know.
As for the round thing below the lens, I don't believe it's used for anything. It may be there as an accessory spot for a different model of similar design or something.
The contacts on the little pop off door are just springs on the one I have, and when I shine a flashlight down in the handle, the contacts look different on 2 of them. Orienting the camera upside down, facing away from me the the one on the left rear is positive end down and the right rear is obviously positive end up. the terminals inside look like a small flat disc on the left and another disc but with a little center nipple-looking protrusion.
The pair in front are totally different and I don't know if they are missing or just designed differently. Best way I can describe them is they look like thin slots with straight metal contacts just barely sticking up.
Check yours out (if you still have it) and let me know what you see and maybe we can figure it out together because mine doesn't seem to power up either.
@@RaceFanDana What you described is exactly what the terminals should look like inside the battery compartment.
It's hard to know why yours won't power up without a disassembly, but I would spray some contact cleaner (I use WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner) down into the battery compartment and see if that helps. I've resurrected several cameras this way. Not always a long term fix, but at least it might help get you going.
@@Filmboy24 Oh thank you for that info. Glad to know that's the design. To be honest I've got this one listed for sale on both craigslist and FB marketplace. Would you have any interest in buying it? (Or anyone else reading this?)
@@Filmboy24 Question: Does it have to have a film cartridge inserted to power up?
At 12 minutes, is an image of this in the manual, or not or you don't have the manual?
Ooops! See that at 13 minutes, but wish you left the image up a little longer. Thanks for another solid video!
Thanks, Nicholas!!
Do you know if normal earplugs will work?
I haven’t tried them but I’m pretty sure they will work.
no sprocket holes?
oooooh, no way!! I'm not a sprocket hole guy, I think they take away from the viewing experience 😀
They arent mean to be seen.
