My experience is that acoustic basses suffer from the inevitable volume deficiency of a bass instrument as against an acoustic guitar, or a singing voice, if you are playing around a campfire or something like that. It's a cool alternative to a usual bass, but unfortunately for any practical application you still need an amp.
