- I visited Sherborne abbey formally cathedral and prominent in the kingdom of Wessex. Featuring King Alfreds brothers burials found in 1840 and 1925 respectfully. I say king only as that is according to the Saxon Chronicles widley contested
A history is as follows below
Saxon cathedral: In 705, the Saxon scholar Aldhelm established a cathedral and became the first bishop of Western Wessex.
Capital of Wessex: Sherborne was the capital of Wessex from 860-878 while Winchester was threatened by Viking attacks.
Benedictine abbey: In 998, the cathedral became a Benedictine abbey.
Bishop's seat: The bishop's seat was moved to Old Sarum in 1075, and the Sherborne church became a Benedictine monastery.
Dissolution of the Monasteries: In 1539, Sir John Horsey bought the monastery buildings and sold them to the townspeople.
Sherborne School: The monastery buildings became Edward VI's Sherborne School.
Sherborne Museum: The former east gatehouse and almonry are now home to Sherborne Museum.
Sherborne Castle: The castle is surrounded by Capability Brown's lake, and Alexander Pope's Seat is a good place to view the castle.

Sherborne House: William Charles Macready leased Sherborne House from 1850-1860. Charles Dickens visited the house and gave public readings, including A Christmas Carol.
The name Sherborne comes from the Old English words scir, meaning "bright" or "clear," and burna, referring to a brook or a stream.
Sherborne holds a significant position in the history of Wessex. Although not mentioned by name, events relating to its foundation are recorded in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles
Sherborne was the site of a bishopric from the later seventh-century until the Normans 'moved' the cathedra 'bishops seat' to a more secure site at [Old] Sarum. Sherborne was, however, to remain a large ecclesiastical manor until the Henry VIII Dissolution of 1542.
