      I agree. Putting aside Maurice's story (post-Gaston song through Belle seeing him in mirror), The timeline between Belle and Beast is not set in stone. Let's say (going by Belle's dress color) blue dress/wolf chase are same day and night and green dress is next morning and Beast shows her the library after she comes back in later in the morning or afternoon. Breakfast in the pink dress is indeterminant of when it occurs because she could have been uncomfortable to dine with Beast at all until that morning. There could have been plenty of (lovely) Belle/Beast bonding moments between pink and gold gown, too. I would love to read it if someone wrote a YA novel based on the '91 film.

    I think you are missing a LOT of things in this movie.
    First of all, I don't think Belle is a snob. She's just bored with small-town life and wants some adventure based upon the stories she reads in books, which are her only real window to possibilities outside her current situation. She's not being a snob and saying that she's better than everyone else, she's just not content like they are.
    Secondly, I think Belle stayed home because they appear to live on a farm with only the two of them. If Maurice needs to leave for some reason, someone has to stay and look after the animals or perhaps the expensive equipment her father keeps in the cellar and many other things. This was before home security systems you can view on your smart phone.
    Thirdly, the passage of time in the movie is NOT explicitly stated and it is CERTAINLY longer than a week. They go from comfortably warm weather to freezing cold winter snow. This implies that the story is taking place in the span of a few months. I don't think that's long enough to wed to someone, but it's long enough to know if you care for them enough to start a serious relationship. I know a few couples that wed within three to give months and are still together and happy today. Sometimes you just know.
    Finally, you're making it seem like because it's not explicitly stated that they want to adventure, that they won't. They don't have to be in-your-face with all their future plans at the end of the movie. YES, they will travel. OF COURSE THEY WILL! Someone who wants adventure and someone who's been locked up for a good decade are surely going to go somewhere. Also, a women falling in love and marrying someone isn't the end of the line for them and it doesn't mean they'll-in your words- be a 'baby factory.'

      Not to mention the final ballroom scene was likely them re-integrating themselves into high society. Just ditching the castle would leave the staff vulnerable, and no one would know who they were. Announcing the former Beast's return to the nobility would secure the staff and give plenty of opportunities for Belle and the prince to travel to meet foreign dignitaries. Belle's not impulsive and selfish; she returned to the castle because the Beast needed her. She would let his need to return to society come first, and that need making it much easier for her to travel safely wouldn't hurt.

      I will also add that this (and most Disney films) is based on a fairytale. Even though they digress (no sisters; inventor, not merchant) they kept the main elements in their story (and added some inspired by Cocteu (misspelled?)). As for chasing Belle's dream of travelling, a recently published Disney YA book, Rebel Rose, begins with just that, the two of them recently broken the spell and marry a few months later start their honeymoon with plans to travel all over Europe. I loved the book BTW and would recommend it to anyone who loves Disney's BatB or likes a French aristocratic historical fiction.

      It's a classic yes, BUT... Because, we don't get official time stamps on the montage sequences, but we know Belle ran away and the Beast saved her on the first night. And, we know Maurice fell ill while trying to get get to the castle. Maurice went straight to the village and begged for help, then set out on his own. In a wintery area, he's not going to survive without shelter for weeks at a time - meaning he's been out there for probably a day, MAYBE two if he had provisions we didn't know about. So, it should be that, while Maurice is asking for help, Belle is running away, and everything else takes place within a few days after that.

    • @east02west
      @east02west 7 років тому +13

      I think it's implied that she stayed there for much longer than a week given the change in seasons. Maurice arrives towards what we suspect is autumn, Belle gets a wardrobe change when she's wearing a much heavier coat and wardrobe during the winter, and finally when Belle is granted leave, she returns home and back to the castle in what one may suspect is spring.

      That's what I thought as well. I mean it has been a couple of years since I have seen the movie but like from what I can remember when Maurice was circling the fountain after being thrown out from the pub was like when what seemed like the first snow of happened. It also leads us to think that it is at the very least late fall because of one scene that was also shown in this video where Bell was in a field of dandy lions. For it to be as close to the end of winter as it was at the end of the movie I do not think there would be Dandy Lions with their fluffs still on them.

What happened is I couldn't afford uni and couldn't decide what to do so didn't want to waste money by studying the wrong thing, ended up in hospital recovering from a major surgery and ended up meeting an amazing guy who I married two years later and we've been together for ten years. Do you really think that they're going to be spinning in that Ballroom forever? Most likely that that was just a party to celebrate the end, and they'll be having an adventure soon enough. I think that it was a few months, mainly because it's Autumn when Belle leaves, and late winter when she gets back (no snow). I think the movie ended perfectly because it never says they're going to get married right away, and being late 18th century, marriage was basically the goal for every woman. Adam and Belle are going to have adventures, mainly because the movie never states they aren't.
    I love this movie with my heart, and I could never come across a problem with it mainly because I don't see it as real life.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  7 років тому +6

      It doesn't matter if they're spinning in the ballroom forever, because that's where the movie ends. That's all we're giving, so that's all there is.
      And, with the seasons, that can't be right, because Maurice goes immediately to get help in the tavern and it's already snowing outside. I agree it looks like late fall in the beginning, but they must have had a sudden storm as it's clearly snowing by the time Maurice arrives back in the village (presumably in the same day).

    Respectfully, the time these were set wasn't exactly a time where Woman was allowed to be independent. Even if she naturally challenged authority, she is following her heart as a single woman, then she met beast who took a lot of pressure of her shoulders. Marriage was like, a must for women back then. Can you blame her for jumping for the first person who caught her heart? She was stubborn. So if she settles with beast, she must have a strong feeling he would be the correct choice.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  7 років тому +12

      I have to disagree, since Disney does not adhere to the culture norms of any era. IF it were historically accurate, Gaston would have asked Belle's father to marry her, and he would have said yes (since he had no idea Belle didn't like him). There would also have to be entire council's and meetings for the Lords to decide if Belle could marry the Beast - and they would likely have said "no." Remember, he's not a king, he doesn't make the rules, and if we're looking at the 1700s, that's well into the time period where nobles were forbidden from marrying whoever their hearts desired. So, if Disney is taking a cafeteria approach to what historical rules they'll follow and what they won't, then my arguments still stand, because those obstacles were chosen for convenience and not legitimacy.

    On the point of the convention: Belle and Maurice are not fully established within the village and they own livestock. So I'd reckon Belle had to stay behind to tend to the house and animals and that they could or would not ask the neighbours.

    I disagree about the "one week and then we're married thing" about the movie, since in the movie, it seems like months go by since it was mid summer at the start and then spring at the end. I think that's an realistic amount of time to get to know a guy. With that said, I think they should've made that more clear.
    One thing I heard about the animated one is that the screen writer, who was a woman, did want to add a scene with the map to show Belle being more adventurous, but was forced to take it out for reasons I forget. The writer and the studio found a compromise that they would add elements of her being adventurous, but also doing housework. However, the element with the map was added into the remake. Whether or not this is pure rumour, I don't know. But if that is the case, the muddled nature of Belle wanting adventure, but then heel turning after that makes a bit more sense.
    With that said, I do kinda wish that they showed Belle and the Beast going off on an adventure somewhere since she would be completing her goal and Adam would explore the world after getting the world's worst cabin fever.
    How I would've ended it is maybe having them celebrating in the ballroom, but as the night is coming to a close, Belle looks as Adam, smirking, saying, "You want to go to Siam?"
    He returns it. "You know it."
    Belle pulls out the book from the remake, places her hand on it and they are whisked away to the distant land, off on another adventure together.

    I don't think that the end of the movie necessarily means the Belle and the Beast are just going to settle down and become the royal family. Like you said in one of your other theory videos, it is unlikely that the beast was a ruling monarch or the next in line, because nobody is freaking out over him going missing. He is more likely a prince farther down in the royal line, which is why it is alright for him to marry a commoner in the first place (because he will never be king). So, there is no expectation for Belle to push out heirs and to rub elbows with other royals because she and the Beast aren't that important in the royal family. So they could go on adventures together probably whenever they want.
    As for the ending of the film, I always got the impression that the ball scene was pretty much right after the beast turns back human. Even though the Beast is not the heir, he is still a royal, so an entire town realizing that a prince was living cursed in the forest and that they tried to kill him and his servants would be a pretty big thing to deal with. The Beast would have to give announcements, maybe imprison or execute people who wouldn't accept him (you really think that everyone would just accept that the magic curse lifted and that this terrifying beast and his magic castle are now a-okay?), and announce his wedding to a commoner. The ball could be their wedding, or more likely, it was a celebration of the Prince's "return" as well as a formal event to introduce Belle as his intended bride. Also, he and his servants were cursed for ten years. I am sure that there are some important affairs that would need to be sorted through before the Beast and Belle could just run off together, like contacting his family, making sure they would have funds available, packing, making a travel schedule, etc. Also, seeing as how proper they were back then, it would probably be scandalous for a young woman and man to travel the world together without being married, so that would have had to be taken care of before they could start traveling, which means balls and parties and invitations and on and on.
    Also, you can't assume that Belle has never seen anything outside of their town because in the "Bonjour" song, she says the town hasn't changed "since the moment that we came", which means that Belle wasn't born there. She had to at least be old enough to remember when they first moved there to know that things have never changed. It is possible, if not very likely, that her childhood home was in a much larger, more diverse town or city. So, if she can remember movie to this poor, provincial town, she probably remembers the not so poor, more urban town she moved from. Also, who knows how old she was when they moved? They could have moved only a few years before the movie takes place. I know the new live action movie tried to explain away the plot holes from the original, like how the town forgot the prince, and it gave Belle more of a background, but that is separate from the animated original.
    I do agree with the some other commenters (like +Bloodmoon209 ) that Belle stayed there much longer than a week because of the change in weather. It was obviously warm when Belle left, but the sequel takes place over Christmas. I think the sequel would count as cannon to the original film because it plays off the story line of the animated film, whereas the live action is a "remake", so as a story it exists independently from the animated film.
    I want to know what you guys think. Sorry for the extremely long post. Also, I want to thank The Fangirl for all of the awesome videos and theories. Keep up the good work!

    I heard there was a straight to DVD movie about just belle's life in the castle while she and beast fall in love, so I think "something there that wasn't there before" was just a montage. She was there for a lot more than a few days.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  7 років тому

      That would work, if not for Maurice's involvement in the story. When he gets sent back to the village, he goes straight to the tavern for help and it's already snowing there. Now, remember, his horse is at the castle with Belle, so there's no way that he could have survived out in the cold for weeks or months on end.
      As for the sequel, I believe Disney churned out a few of them - but my stance is that they are as cannon as Belle's appearance in Sofia the First or Sing a Story with Belle. It was a money grab and has poor continuity with the original (like many of the Disney straight-to-video releases).

    Also, some other problems:
    1. Ariel actually achieved her dream (of being human). Jasmine didn't give up on her dream, rather Aladdin won her heart by giving her a way to achieve her dream.
    2. calling someone a "baby factory" is incredibly rude.
    3. Belle never claims to be better than the village people.
    4. Who's to say they don't travel together after they get married?Just because you meet someone doesn't automatically glue you to one spot.

    For this, in my opinion it more like the ending was a celebration/wedding kinda thing and if it is she wanting to settle down, it's like a child that says they never want kids, girls/boys have cooties, I wanna be an astronaut, people and their goals do change. And sometimes staying with the one you love, you find more fulfilling than traveling a world that ultimately hates you. This is a story of two outcasts finding romance in how they can relate, it would be more of an us against them kinda thing. So her finding someone like herself would worth slowing down for, maybe that's what she always wanted to look for and why she escaped reality and thought of travel. Being a vet seems like fun because animals, but then you hear about the 8+ years it takes to actually do it and all the sudden just own animals seems way better since it fufills it. You didn't give up on your dreams, you just found another way to get what you truly wanted. She didn't throw her life away for a man, she just found another person to share it with. And romance isn't a bad thing for a girl. Just hell if anything it needs to be explained more because honestly, how many girls know how it works? Just I think this is ACTUALLY a good love story for it. It's realistic, but still fairytale-like, it's actually a deep connection, just so few people understand an actual deep connection that they would rather say she has Stockholm even though to someome who knows any psychology knows that's bullshit. Kinda how people assume being bi is just a phase and eventually we choose one because we got married to either a guy or a girl. It's meant to be a romance and it does amazingly~ just like kinks or different sexualities or even just lifestyles are often taken out of context and shoved into a negative light because people find it more amusing when its a horror story. A hate bandwagon. sad really..

    Emma Watson talked about how after the wedding she would have like to open up the library and make it a school for the children in the village. To me having a young woman so passionate about reading teach others to read would have been worth more than any place she could have visited. Sometimes meeting our significant other makes us change our plans and priorities. I found marriage and children to be the greatest adventure I have ever been on and if other women feel that way, it is surely their right. Belle with all her intelligence would hardly be a trophy wife but would work hard at making life better for all those in the kingdom.

  • @GanonGhidorah
    @GanonGhidorah 6 років тому +2

    My objections to this are obvious;
    for the one thing before Philipe arrives to take Belle into the woods, its established that Belle and her Father own animals; like a few chickens, maybe even a goat, in addition to Phillipe. So therefore, Belle had to stay behind to take care of the animals as well as the house while Maurice was gone. If they were both gone, then someone could've easily stolen their livestock - and potentially raided their house - in their absense.
    Secondly; Belle DOES get her adventure...unless you don't call being imprisoned by a monster in an enchanted castle and slowly melting his heart through kindness and friendship, culminating in a climactic roof-top battle during a rainstorm as an Adventure? Belle experienced things that no other human can; an enchanted castle filled with magical servants, genuine danger from the wolves, and managed to tame a Savage Beast and turn him human again, all the while getting away from her crappy home-life being accosted by a guy who doesn't take "No" for an answer.
    And who is to say that Belle and Adam's life ends with their marriage? Adam is a PRINCE...the guy is wealthy AF, he's literally going to provide Belle with the life she's always wanted. Anywhere Belle wants to travel to, any place that Belle wants to see, he'll take her there. This isn't like in Once Upon a Time, where Rumple won't travel the world with Belle because he'll lose his magic; this is a guy who genuinely loves Belle and wants to give her everything she deserves, because she saved him.
    You really think they're not going to Travel to other places?
    Just because we don't see it in the movie doesn't mean it's not going to happen. Life doesn't end at marriage, nor does it end with the credits to a movie.

      Disney impacted a lot of lives and telling girls that 'it doesn't matter if you're independent or not you still will fall in love and will marry someone' is a terrible message. And she isn't a snob it was the people who were a snob against her because she's a woman who wants freedom, pursues her hobbies, and uses her brain for once. Back in the 17th-19th century, women weren't allowed to do anything productive like men do only cook, clean and raise their children. Once they were married to a man, they are nothing but a property to their husband. Gaston is a perfect example.

    In my opinion it didn’t really seem like Belle was just content with staying in the castle forever and never got out and have an adventure out there, I think it was more of them having a dance to celebrate the new beginning of both Belle & the Beasts lives. The hardest part of their lives that they’ve had to encounter is over, the world is they’re oyster now and they are just celebrating it

    Plus my mother wanted to do same thing as Belle..see the world.. But my mother grew up become logical. You can have fantasy/adventure in our own home. It seems Belle realized it too in the end. Her new adventure would was going to be marriage, and being in love...and by default being a prince..of course! They would travel. The ballroom scene was just a happy. "YEA WE ALL HUMAN AGAIN LETS HAVE A PARTY! But after the party we are leaving and gonna see the world!"

      ♚ QUEEN OF OBSCURE PAIRINGS ♚ What a lie. Having kids, being a trophy wife, baby factory, a slave to do all the cooking, cleaning, groceries, childcare, dishes, washing, and everything else for a man replaced any dreams of traveling the world? Because love? If a guy really loved you, he wouldn't keep you at home to make babies and do all the work like a default slave. And he wouldn't invalidate all your dreams of traveling the world, like, "forget exploring the world. Your new happily-ever-after adventures are slaving away at home for me and raising my kids for the rest of your life!" Don't love someone who does this to you. I know I'm being harsh, but I can't stand it when girls throw away real dreams for this kind of "adventure." What about marriages where the women isn't a house slave and her husband helps her out and doesn't invalidate her dreams and supports them? Do we all have to conform to such an abusive marriage standard instead? I guess some people don't know any better than to have that kind of awful marriage that society teaches is normal, but sacrificing your dreams to marry and have kids should not be considered normal. You should be able to have both, family and dreams. You shouldn't have to sacrifice one for the other. We should ALL able to be like one of the rare good examples I mentioned earlier.

      Janica Everlens Sometimes people just change their priorities in life.
      Just because you do chores around the house doesn't make you a slave. It's something everyone would have to do.
      And husbands do help out with housework if they're decent humans. (But if you're an at home wife and they work I only think its fair the one staying at home does most of the work.)
      There are people who have some tick in their mind that goes off where they really want children. If that happen to their mom, it would make sense that since she has the kids her dream right now would be to focus on keeping her kids healthy and feeling loved.
      Only people living in a perfect world can everyone achieve every dream they have.
      Kids grow up though and will live in their own, that's when her dream of adventure would probably be most convenient to achieve, and she wouldn't have to give up on it in the end.
      Sometimes dreams get put on hold, but it doesn't mean her life is as worthless as it feels you're making it out to be.

    I also hate how many books/shows that "take a new spin" on fairy tales (mainly Once Upon a Time and the comics Fables) don't know what to do with Belle. She usually stuck in a library as exposition keeper. Or in Fables, she's kinda there... I haven't read all the comics, so she might have gotten her own story, but Beast gets to become a police officer! I always feel bad for Belle.
    Beauty by McKinley was an interesting adaptation but still ends the same as the movie (but it makes sense within the story as well).

In the book of the life action (where they do get married in the end) it even says they are about to travel the world before settling and putting their ideas for the kingdom into action. Don’t understand why you call yourself „The Fangirl“ if you tear it all apart. But I do see your point and every one is entitled to their own opinion. Okay first of all Belle is not a snob. Just because she reads books and is pretty doesn't mean she is a snob. Also Belle doesn't leave with her father because she needs to stay home and take care of the house and also to clean up so when her father comes home from his long journey he can come home and rest. Also when Maurice leaves there is no snow, but when he comes back, there is snow. When he leaves he ends up at the Beasts castle, and there is snow there (also note the witch lady, erased all the memoirs of everyone who new about the castle, then there is snow, yet at the end of the movie the snow is gone and everything goes back to normal) and when Belle comes and takes her fathers place, he goes back and there is snow. Which probably means that they were in the month November or September and there was a little cold and snow, it would probably be more like November. Anyway Belle stays and she doesn't fall in love with the beast after a week, if she is there for Christmas (like in the special they showed them spending Christmas together) then that is WAY longer then a week. By the time The Beast does let her go its spring and she leaves him and then Gaston comes in and tries to kill him and all that. At the end of the movie she says she loves him and he turns into a human, then they get married and that's we're the movie ends. Know think beyond the end of the movie Belles father still probably lives in the Village and so her and Adam would probably go and visit him and if she has kids of course her and Adam would want to take them and go explore and probably even before they have kids they might explore. Just because you don't see them do that at the end of the movie doesn't mean they don't leave. Both of them want to see the world and they are going to travel. I am sorry but I don't agree with anything you said. She didn't fall in love with him after a week, this isn't Romeo and Juliet (even though they only new each other for maybe 3 days) she fell in love with him after a couple of months. Know that you now this information do you change your mind?

      You are confusing the live action movie with the animated one. They are not the same. Also, the movie involving Xmas is not canon. It's like Belle appearing on Sofia the First or Sing a Story with Belle - it's just a way to use a character to get money. Just like Adam is not the prince's name - he's never officially given one and Adam is just a fan name that stuck.
      And, how is telling everyone around you that they bore you and are provincial not snobbish?

    Actually, I completely disagree with your original statement for all the Era 2 princesses EXCEPT Belle. Ariel wanted to live a life independent from her father's wishes and explore the human world-- Which she did. Her meeting the 'cute boy' is actually what encouraged her to finally take initiative and seek out a way to achieve her original dream of exploring the human world. Jasmine wanted to marry for love and be treated with respect as an independent individual who could leave her home-- Both things she got by the end of the movie. After meeting Ali (who she recognized instantly as Aladdin) there was no need for her to try to run away again, she was getting what she wanted. Mulan wanted to make her family proud of her, save her father from war, and be able to express who she is free from society's scrutiny-- All of which she accomplished while also SAVING ALL OF CHINA. Shang and her relationship was just an afterthought at the end of the movie. Pocahontas wanted to choose her own path in life and not be forced to marry-- Her choosing to love and defend John Smith WAS her choosing her own path in life, one that she fought the entire movie to make. And Cocono died, so, she didn't have to marry him. Belle wanted adventure in the great wide somewhere and someone who understood her--- And, well, she got one of those things? I mean, I guess the library means the Beast understands her. I ADOOOORE BATB, but Belle is technically the only Era 2 Disney princess who gives up part of her dream for a boy.

  • @jokergirl129
    @jokergirl129 7 років тому +2

    I'm sorry but there is a lot that I don't agree with in this video. For one I don't see how Belle is being a snob in the beginning of the film. We clearly see that the other villagers thinks she is odd for reading so much and acting differently from everyone else. But the brief interactions we do see of Belle interacting with them she is being friendly and polite. Yes she wants more out of her life but Belle isn't looking down on the other villagers. As for why Belle doesn't go to the convention with her father in the “Belle Reprise” we see that they have a small farm with goats and chickens. Someone has to stay behind to take care of the animals and to look after the house. So it makes sense that Belle would stay behind to keep an eye on things. Plus I don't think they would be able to ask someone else in the village to look after their home since the people think that Maurice is a little odd too.
    As for how long Belle was with the Beast for it's really hard to tell how much time passes by. We know it's late Fall/Winter in the film base on the background and the weather. But during the ball scene at the end of the movie it looks like it might be Spring. There is no clear indication if the events of the film happen between a few days/weeks or a few months. And
    weather you consider An Enchanted Christmas to be canon or not can really muddy the waters. The original tale I think was also vague on how much time went by. But when it comes to fairy tales and Disney movies in general it's common for characters to fall in love in a short amount of time. It's one of those things that seems to be a given because in most cases it's hard to tell how much time passes between events in certain films and you have a limited run time. So you have to get the plot moving while showing the characters spending time together as they fall in love. We do see Belle and Beast getting to know each other and spending time together and how they begin to developed feelings for each other. I think it's important we do see that. Falling in love quickly may not always be a good thing when it comes to real life but it's kind of different when it comes to fairy tales and movies. As long as it doesn't come completely out of nowhere and we see two characters spending time together and forming a bond then it's okay.
    My biggest issue however is that you take such a negative view on Belle for falling in love and marrying Adam when he turns back to being human. Thinking that she's given up
    on her dreams and will only be having babies. There's nothing in the movie that indicates that Belle has given up on her dreams for adventure. Yes the movie ends with Belle and Adam dancing at the ball but that to me just shows them celebrating breaking the curse and connecting with the people again. They went through a lot to get their happy ending and now they have their whole lives to do things together. Since Adam is a prince he has the money and the means for him and Belle to travel and see the wold together. Their marriage is
    a whole new beginning for both of them and an adventure in itself. Belle is given the opportunity to have the life she's always wanted and the fact she gets to share that with someone she loves is all the better. Just because we aren't shown them packing their bags or talking about traveling elsewhere doesn't mean it doesn't happen at all.

    did you even watch the movie? because if you were paying even a scant bit of attention you'd notice the passing seasons. Also, you keep whining about belle not having an adventure. In case you haven't noticed, SHE DID. IN AN ENCHANTED FUCKING CASTLE. Belle is a peasant girl living in a small, boring village. The most exciting thing she's likely seen before the events of the movie is a chicken running around with its head cut off. And you said belle doesn't make her own decisions. Tell me, was she told to go after maurice? was she told to exchange her freedom for his? when she was told to stay out of the west wing, did she? was she told to help the beast back to the castle? was she told to fall in love with the beast? Riddle me that.

      Not unless Maurice is a ghost. He was tossed out of the castle and the enchanted carriage took him straight back to the village. 1 day ride at most, probably less. Maurice goes straight into the tavern, where everyone laughs at him. Maurice then immediately goes out to rescue Belle on his own and is wondering around for maybe 1-2 days before Belle goes to rescue him. In the cold weather, an old, fat man with no wilderness training (which he obviously didn't have, or else he would have never found the castle) wouldn't survive any longer than that.
      After that, the villagers storm the castle, implying that it's not that long of a walk away from town, and Belle immediate arrives and ultimately changes the Beast back in the prince. So, giving the travel lots of time, you're looking at 4 days.

    You know this is a romantic ending, but it doesn't outright say they're getting married right at that moment. That dance could have easily just been celebratory for everything being right again with the enchantment being broken. Ultimately yeah, they probably got together, but it's ambiguous about how long they take to tie the knot, and there's nothing saying even if they did get married soon after that they stayed holed up there forever and didn't travel. Marrying Adam doesn't take away her characterization or automatically mean she's just reduced to a 'baby factory' for royals, and it's sad that people don't seem to consider marriage as an adventure in itself in these stories. Just because they're interested in someone or fall in love with someone doesn't mean they're giving up on their dreams. Ariel's dream wasn't given up because of Eric. He was in fact, part of that dream. She wanted to be part of the human world, and he was a vehicle to that end. How was that giving up her dream for a handsome face? Sure all the love stories in these fairy tales are super rushed, but that's also part of the problem of a hour and a half running time. As for Jasmine, she didn't really change who she was either, or immediately give up her dreams. She wanted to marry for love, and she didn't want to get married to someone just because of her social status. Both things accomplished. Two movies afterward shows them not immediately married. Time has passed, she's GIVEN time to decide whether her love for Aladdin is real or strong or not. So really, I can't categorize any of these girls in the lump you chose to lump them.
    Going back to Beauty and the Beast the first movie is actually pretty ambiguous on the timeline she's there. When they first arrive at the castle it is not winter, it's in fact summer at least. There's mature dandelions and green on the trees. They are there during a winter, and when the castle is attacked, it's raining and the snow is melted and its spring again. (Though admittedly this makes very little sense with Maurice and the snow when they get home.) The movie suggests it goes on for some amount of time in any case, with Maurice and the weather's side of things just muddling up the plot.

  • @bunnychu15
    @bunnychu15 6 років тому

    I agree that the story is somewhat flawed as no story is perfect, but I also strongly feel that the Broadway musical version fixes most of the problems you pointed out which is why (despite the girl who bullied me nearly to death in high school playing the character in our senior year musical removed her as my favorite Disney princess) it is still my favorite Broadway musical adaptation of a Disney movie. The movie doesn't really explain this well, but the musical (being given two acts on a Broadway stage thus the ability to expand) is able to show that Belle's time with the Beast helped her grow as a person, understanding that she is not the only one who deals with the feeling of being "odd," all while wanting more in life.
    To provide some examples of this, I'll use two scenes from the movie and explain what the musical did to fix it. When Belle asks her father if she's odd, instead of just talking to her, Maurice has a heart-to-heart in a song called "No Matter What," explaining that he too feels a bit odd, as does everyone in their own way, despite seeming to fit into the mold that was provided for them. The other scene from the movie that they used to further fix this took place during the "Something There" scene and was a very touching bonding moment between the two. When the Beast gives Belle the library, she learns that the Beast never learned to read as a child and reads him a story. The Beast says he enjoys the story because it helps him forget what he is. Belle responds by saying "we have something in common, you know" and explains that she's always felt like the odd one out in her town.
    I feel this fixes the flaws the movie had because it shows that her time in the Beast's castle didn't just help Belle meet her true love, but it helped her grow as a person, understanding that she's not the only one who feels like she's odd. The movie also makes it look like she was given more in life, but the musical essentially shows that she only got it through a journey she had to take, one that completely frightened her at first. There's a song called "Home" that is only in the Broadway show that I recommend you listen to, as well as "If I Can't Love Her," which explains a bit of why the Beast acts the way he does around Belle.

    I've adored Belle since I was a wee lass. I still think she is a smart and independent person with a strong sense of adventure. And I also agree with you. She wanted knowledge and adventure. I believe she wanted to be an inventor like her father. I am not saying that the way the movie ended is a bad end. But she did give up her original dream to be with a new one. She found a great adventure with the Beast. However, I don't think that he should've been her only adventure. I've sort of hoped that she was reading and inventing things in her new life. And planning to set out into the world! Proving people similar to Gaston that she's really not that odd of a woman to do what she expected of herself instead of what was expected of her :)

    1. Belle wanting adventure doesn’t mean she immediately has to go with him to the convention. Someone has to watch over they’re place, his inventions, and the animals
    2. She stayed for more than just a week. There was one sing in the movie where her and the beast hang out in the snow. The ending scene wasn’t even a wedding. It was just a celebration. If it was a wedding, she probably wouldn’t have been wearing her gold dress again.
    3. Just because she feel in love doesn’t mean she suddenly stopped being adventurous. She wanted adventure and she got it.
    4. I have absolutely no idea how her being bored of her life then what it currently is being a snob. Hell she never bitches about anyone but Gaston and that was for a good reason. I’ve lived in one state my entire life......guess how much I want to completely leave it behind? It’s probably not any different for her and she’s more than likely not even from there.

    I like to think after having a little celebration dance they went on a long trip around the world. I don't think they got married right away because in Disney descendants Belle says they got married when the Beast was 28 (near the beginning Belle said "you decided to marry me at 28" when the Beast said "I didn't make a good decision until I was at least 42". That would mean they were together for about 7 YEARS before getting married since the Beast is 21 in this movie.

  • @EmilyCheetham

    Who’s to say it was immediately? It could have been a couple months after he turned human again that they married. Plus people’s plans and ambitions can change. Lastly on the timing. Some people theorise that the castle was in a time bubble (theoretically) so time went differently so they could have been together for months and the love grew. After all the kiss did break the spell.

    I agree, they could love each other in a platonic way like they did in the original tale. They became great friends over a long period of time until Bell decided she was happy with being with Beast. She even went home for a couple of weeks to think about it.

    I like to think it was a lot longer than a week. Mostly because it was late fall, or very early winter, when she came. Then it was late winter even x-mas passed, from Beauty and the Beast enchanted x-mas, thenit was spring at they're wedding.

    They were just celebrating at the end. no wedding. no lock down on adventures. they don't show what comes next because everyone can imagine their own happy endings. like when you read a book and it resolves the main conflict in the end and doesn't tell you what the rest of the characters' lives are like. I always thought after the end they would travel, get
    married and Belle would open her own library and teach people to read.

  • @Zaya512

    You literally see the seasons change.... and there's nothing to say they didn't go travel after that, just because that's not what they were doing right that moment at the end, I mean that is another time jump, for all we know, that particular ball at the end could be to celebrate them having just returned from some year long adventure.

    Something that frustrates me is that everyone seems to think that falling in love or depending on someone is being weak but thats simply just not true cause relationships are about leaning on eachother which makes both parties stronger. This is the problem with a lot of people who say they are feminists they act like jerks to men and even the idea of being vulnerable ever. Its not easy to be strong and in charge all the time we gotta depend on each other. I think it would have been nice to see Belle and Adam go visit somewhere cool but honestly they are living in medieval France finding a cool castle fighting of wolves and taming a beast would be more adventure than most could ever dream of. If they had gone on a boat they would have died of horrible diseases and Im sure they visited other towns after marriage. People fail to remember the time this was set in

    I've hoped so long for someone to address this thing! I mean, everyone seems to hate Ariel for giving up everything for a man, yet Belle does exactly the same thing and no-one even notices. To me, those two were almost the same character: they both dream about faraway places, and yet settle down living with a prince in the castle not even that far from their homes. And Jasmine doesn't even get out of her own castle...

    They wouldn't have had to work extra hard to deliver her to the beast if she'd gone with her father.
    The people who made this movie could have easily had Belle fall asleep in the back of the wagon when her father chose that pass.
    That could have cut time actually, then they could have given the beast more back story.

  • @arezkiabderrahman704

    okay, please let me said it in my way:
    i'm a boy yeah but not against you, to get a hot or any guy don't make you perfect and the same thing with males
    there's another kinds of love: family, friendship, get a hero who want to be like
    a good example i can get from anime and animations and anime is this: wirt and greg, naruto and sasuke, izuku and all might
    however, that don't mean we don't need a life partner. this is in our nature and not think to feel shame about it
    but the point it's don't give up everything you wanted to be for them
    it's important for male and female to be a parents and make a good new generation
    but you don't have to be like belle and give up when everything is perfect
    in real life we can't get always happily ever after
    there's pain, suffering, sadness, racism, a weird marriages, breaking, satanism, Illness
    and sooo many bad things
    also women can do things man can't do and this true and in same time man can do things woman can't do
    actually this is brain science
    but the point here nobody is perfect, and the fact that man can do things woman can't do don't make her less important
    there is soooooo many people who are now a heroes or scientists because of there's mother or wife or even daughter
    this true, ask thomas edison for example
    see i'am a man and i can't say that the man can be without a woman
    in the end, don't wait for prince or give up everything you want for him (unless if he told you to stop doing something bad, nevermind)
    make your dreams true. or at least try don't be like belle. and when the time came and you married him
    be a good wife a good mother and he also should be like this.
    so just do what you was going to do and be happy and a good person.
    and note: don't try to be like man, be yourself that mean yourself
    and i don't want my message be women are weak or can't stay without man. my message again make your dreams true then find your prince

    I can understand the frustration with belle. She's not that independent as they make her. I will say that maybe they were to travel, but the movie might of ended at their wedding. However, we could not know if they were to travel afterwards. You also got to think about belles father. He is old and she may need to take care of him because it.
    I'm sorry if I sound arguementative, it's just ur theories really get me thinking! 😅 Have you done one on the beast and whether or not his behavior is acceptable in the movie? That would be interesting.

    Well, I never thought very highly of that movie, even as a kid. But now the issue I see with it is that the moral of the story is kind of heavy-handed. You shouldn't judge a person based on their looks, yet the Beast never learns that lesson because all the movie expects from him is falling in love with the pretty and intelligent girl - who gets rewarded with the Beast being turned back into a human. She dreams of a "great, wide somewhere", yet she trades it in by staying with the Beast, after her Stockholm Syndrome kicked into gear. And also, the servants also don't express any desire to leave the place they have been trapped in for the past decade? :'D

      Naaah Just referencing some bits from the original Madame de Villeneuve story where it was confirmed that Belle was the child of a king and a good Fairy and in order to protect her from an evil fairy switched her with a merchants dying baby.
      My rule of thumb for adaptions is 'Source material=Canon to adaption UNLESS adaptation contradicts source material'
      so the Disney animated film DOESN'T say Belle is half fairy..... but her mother is surprisingly absent and not mentioned and we DO have a barley mentioned Female magic user who COULD be described as a fairy sooooooooo....

      Remember, the Christmas special isn't really cannon. It's on the same level as Belle appearing on Sofia the 1st or Once Upon a Time - or, heck, even those dozens of Belle's Story Time videos. The Enchanted Christmas was a money grab, and while it does exist, notice how Disney completely ignored it when re-releasing the animated original on Blu Ray?

    I disagree with your interpretation of the film. I believe that Belle was there longer than a week. Also, her feelings for the beast a quite genuine. After she tried to leave the castle he came to save her. She could have just left and went home, but she decided that if he would do that for her then she could go with him and help him back to the castle. Another point I disagree with was the end scene. I believe it was there to represent their marriage. Belle and the beast are two people who have no reason to stay there after they get married. They will travel in the future and go on adventures, the movie, however, needed more of a definitive ending. If it showed Belle and the beast packing up then it it would leave the audience believing that a sequel was was in the future. Besides for a straight to dvd sequel that (if I’m remembering correctly) shows more of the time that Belle spent with the beast in his castle before the transformation, there wasn’t a sequel. Also, if it was all about Belle dropping all of her dreams after finding a cute boy then she would have settled for Gaston and none of this would have taken place.
    (P.S.- I love your Coraline theories)

    I thought the time she spent there was around a year though. Since the castle was enchanted time there would be akin to entering the Fae World.
    A couple of minutes in there would be a couple of years here.
    Though I think I'm just thinking of another story.😏
    Especially since the weather is the same outside of the castles boundaries.😐
