Thanks for taking the time to show us this, no pun intended. I was just sitting here waiting for my wings to finish when I chose to look at my clicking timer better and I began to wonder how it worked. =)

Ended up getting a timer due to the timer on my dryer busting, and curiosity lead me to wanting to know how it works, appreciate the video 👍

Thanks! My tomato timer ticks but the bell doesn't ring. The woman who sold it to me said they don't come with bells. I took it apart as per your video and saw the striking hammer and the metal bell. Then the spring jumped off. It was a super big pain to put back on. The timer is ticking again but the bell still doesn't ring. It went off a few times when I was trying to pull the spring back on, but not now that it is back together. I need to get better tools. Fascinating.

Did you turn it clockwise to the 60mins and then anti clockwise to the time you need? That's what instruction says

Good video but what you call a pendulum is actually a balance wheel, the same system used in mechanical watches. Pendulum movements use a weight that swings back and forth at a set rate to keep time like on grandfather clocks

The timer I have is an old vintage collectors item and works intermittently. I'm told it needs to be oiled, but what part do I oil? The teeth on the gears? The shaft the knob goes on?
Please help. This is a birthday gift for my wife.

You didn't explain how the spring makes the gears turn

Hello, very interesting video. I learned a lot. I want to modify a kitchen timer to be 60 sec instead of 60 min. Could you give me any suggestion? The idea behind is to install it in a toy kitchen as timer for the oven.

You have to change the gears I would imagine. Excapements are absolutely not meant to be run as quickly as you are asking. You may just want to put a flywheel or governor on the spring from a kitchen timer to replace the escapement. But there is no way you could properly time it.

The pendulum is actually is called the escapement lever. The end has pallet forks or pin levers to actuate the escape wheel allowing it to lock and run at the proper intervals due to the winding down of the mainspring. The back and forth motion of the pin lever is caused by the balance wheel that has a hair spring that pushes it one way ( lock). As the tension is overcome the hairspring causes the balance wheel to return back and push the lever the other way ( run) and then it starts over again and regulating the escapement wheel as it counts down. It's quite the process though learning the mechanics. Here is an example of a similar movement, but more sophisticated. The principal is basically the same.

You are giving information about gears. Gears turn at different speeds in a stack due to the ratio of teeth with relationship to each other. Not due to size alone.
