New to the Commodore 64 and i have a question😂. I see there are different versions files for the same game. I see some games can be either tape. D64 or even crt. Which version is the best to use? I found a almost complete set but not sure which ones to keep and which copys to get rid of. Thanks for any help.

I agree that VICE is the best, most full-featured C64 emulator, however it does have some shortcomings.
The emulator only saves a single default configuration. Why is this a problem? Because NTSC and PAL modes have different colors. After you spend ages getting the screen to look exactly like you remember on your real machine, you switch to the other mode and now the colors look nothing like you remember. You should be able to save different configurations for each model.
Speaking of video settings, Unless you can find a magical combination of screen resolution and video settings, scanlines are probably going to look like crap in fullscreen mode. The problem is that they should be 100% evenly spaced, but they aren't. Apparently the inclusion of the border throws the calculations off, so unless you can figure out exactly the right settings, the lines aren't evenly spaced and it looks like hell. Modern LCD screens can complicate the issue if you're not using the screen's native resolution, because one pixel in the program no longer equals one pixel on the screen. Other emulators manage to get scanlines right, but VICE struggles with them. Several years ago when I brought this up on the Lemon64 forum, I was told point blank that the developers didn't care about playing games in fullscreen mode, and that they overwhelmingly used VICE to watch demos in a window.
Modern controllers have multiple buttons, and it would be very helpful if you could configure those extra buttons to emulate the keyboard or even the other joystick. There was a hack of VICE years ago to allow you to do this, but it's long since been abandoned. UAE is great in this regard as you can assign pretty much anything to any of the controller buttons or functions. Admittedly, the method for doing so is a little confusing, but it works.
The SuperCPU is a nice idea, but forget about using it for games. Outside of the one or maybe two games that were designed for it, it makes games unplayable. You'd think it would be great for 3D games, but it makes the entire game run too fast, so that as soon as you get attacked, you die. You can find many 3D games that claim to work on the SuperCPU, or that claim to be fixed for it, but every last one of them ends up being unplayable in some aspect.
As for the loading, I've never understood why VICE can't auto-switch Warp mode on when the tape or disk drive is being accessed. I was once told that this would be impossible, but I'm skeptical. It has to know when the emulated tape or disk drive is active, so why not toggle on Warp mode when it is, and toggle it off when the activity stops? Not by default of course, but as an option. I mean, when you use the auto-load option, it does this and turns off Warp mode at the end of the load, so why couldn't it do it automatically all the time? As it is, the only way to speed up all disk access is to add a copy of the JiffyDOS ROMs. This will make disk access about five times faster. It's not as fast as some cartridge based fast-load routines, although they usually only work on single files.
Finally, although this isn't the fault of VICE, it's annoying that The C64 and Amiga seem to be the only systems where nobody labels the games as being US/NTSC or European/PAL. While the vast majority of game images available on the net are PAL, there are a few US versions floating around, but it's trial and error which mode you need to use. The only other systems I've seen that don't indicate the region for games are ones that were either release in only one region, or the region doesn't matter. Back when I was using my real C64 in the US, this was a problem as many cracked PAL games didn't work properly on NTSC systems. For years, I thought the cracking groups were incompetent for releasing such broken games.

I liked how SDL version can 'emulate" the CRT monitor .

Can it really be correct that you can't configure 2 buttons, so you have 1 button for fire and 1 for jumping??
I can do it in CSS64 but that doesn't save on exit and more and more games do not work on it, so I was looking more and more at Vice

I'm guessing the SDL is preferred.
I'm on Mac M1, so Rosetta is needed (Rosetta does not emulate scripts/Terminal)

Although I definitely have a 64-bit system, the 32-bit version worked instead!
I couldn't get Project Firestart working in an older version I had (WinVICE-2.4-x86) so started looking around for alternatives. This worked though! Thanks for the quick response.
