Dear Dave, Really enjoying the fire school series of vid uploads. I watched you with Cody on dual survivor which was great too, but this really is a Masterful compilation. Great to have such clear cam work, setup and development of processes and procedures explained so thoughtfully and clearly. These video series really are a great gift for the community writ large to have the benefit of access to your distilled down wisdom. Thank you very much!
That was awsome! I can say I have learned something and very useful today. Thanks Dave and thanks to the person who mentioned it. That's what I love about this, I can always learn something new. Safe trips to you and Iris, have fun at the School of the Longhunter, wish we could be there this year.
Simpy amazing. And only you would take time out from gettign ready to head to the fort to run out and do this experiment. This is why so many of us love your videos!
Hello Dave! Kevin from all the way up here in Canada Eh! Love your channel-keep up the great work. You talk clear, explain things in a way that is easy to understand and always have great tips-Thanks! Reason why i'm here is i wanted to share a little something I've learned while volunteering for a whole summer two years ago in a special place 3 hrs north of my house in Ontario called Algonquin Park. Long-story-short is the horse hoof fungus (Fomes formentarius)-Tinder Fungus,Tinder Conk-native name is "Amadou" which was found(1991) in the pocket of a preserved body in the Alps near the Austrian-Italian border. I'm not going to lie, I had to check for better details for you and others before i posted, but I hope you enjoyed what I had to share. Oh one last thing I just wanted to say is a real BIG thanks Dave for opening up and sharing all of your self reliance skills! Thanks again.
Awesome, posted last video im amazed I still learn stuff from every one of your videos, even cooler to see your still learning new things all the time and that you still get giddy when you find something new, really cool
Great job dave! I would of never thought that that would work. Normally horse hoof fungus is ether to brittle or to damp so you have to ether allow it to dry out a little or use it as it is if its brittle and hope for the best ha ha ether way I would of thought a spindle would just drive through it or crumble it but you made it work! Thanks for showing us the grayman
Thanks for trying this and posting the video. My buddy and I teach survival but our area does not have a lot of the wood types which are good for the bow drill. So we wanted to try this (tried it once, did not succeed). We also want to try it with two corn cobs tied together. Glad you got an ember eventually!
Chaga you can use to get an ember with bow and drill. I seen it done by a friend of mine . She has a vid up on it , Gullrica is the name of the channel.Good video cool test.
Nice job Dave. Now I want to see you shave some slices off the tinder fungus, char them as you would char cloth and get an ember using flint and steel. I've done it so it can be done.
I haven't tried using the bow drill and horsehoof technique,, but have used ferro rod striker to get embers going on horsehoof fungi .. and also may try to soak horsehoof fungi in lamp oil
Sounds like you have a nice holler next to you. A friend of mine has a really nice one. You can hear and understand the neighbors talking a little over 300 yards away and vice versa, and it doesn't have to be very quiet out. Might make a good video as people used to value a good holler to communicate with each other. They are useful for tracking game and such as well.
That looks different from the Fomes Fomentarius we have in the UK. Perhaps it is different? Dave is bowing into the pores on the underside. I have tried this alot and got nowhere. I then flipped it over and it started to smoke, realising I was bowing into the amadou which seems much more viable. I can't see our stuff working pore side up but will keep trying both sides. Any other experienced comments welcome!
Dave, I don't remember where I saw that instead of catching the amber in a piece of wood the natives would put the birds nest right underneath the notch saved a step and created fire faster, don't really know if that will work but it seems logical... Would you try it out, and let us know if it works?
you should try this with the hand drill method with a string at the top of the spindle and 2 loops on it with a notch at the top of the spindle for the string to go into. i recently found some horse hoof and its awesome straight off the tree it took a spark from a ferro rod when i made it into dust
Hey Dave i have a question. So the other day i was out in the woods and i always have a couple carabiners with me for hanging stuff and what not. But i was wondering in there is a product out there (i couldnt find one) that is a carabiner and also a steel for a flint and steel. I think that would make a great product and would be super multi functional. Let me know when you can if you know of anything like this. Thanks
I have a Brimble Hickory butcher knife i got from my grandmother like 20 years ago.I was wondering if you have any information or can direct to someone who might? It's been a great bush knife. Is it related to the old hickory?
Did you make or purchase the metal arrowhead piece that you use to hold the drill part? If you purchased it where can I get one. Thank you again for the video.
Good Idea of this guy ! I´d be interested, if it is easier with this fungus than with wood. I mean, is it easier to find this fungus in good dry condition than a peace of wood ?
VERY NICE .....The best part in my opinion is you don't give up much like my self .....lmao....watch to many episodes of NAKED N AFRAID ....were they just give up .....hope to shake your hand one day .... :)
Good point, another question i feel like 7 inches is a bit long (you're opinion?) is there a shorter version as i like the style but are just unsure of the length of the blade, thoughts? Thanks brother :D
i really wanted to see if it would work to dave,,you may have just created charred dust that might take a spark to brother..you sure started something now since its called the false tinder fungus ..nice brother.. ..bill
Wow! Dave I never heard you huff and puff lol That must have been a job to get that fungus to give an ember. JK I doubt I could have made it if it gave you such a hard time.
Your a humble guy Dave . You don't mind giving credit to others and that makes you a class act . GBY
I just can't get enough of your videos my friend. You're humble and simple. Thank you for everything.

never seen you more excited about something. this is absolutely what the pathfinder learning center is all about!

nice video!
your fire series is the best you made so far!
thank you for all the information!
Cool!! I think foregoing the re-faceting of the spindle will increase friction and reduce the cutting action.
Great job,Dave!
Job well done, Dave.
Great job, awesome to see it work ;)-
Hi Dave
wow, very interesting! made very cool and good drill, I'm going to remember.
Thank you.
LG Remo
Fungus among-us. Thanks Dave...good stuff as always. Bug photo-bomb at the end, LOL.
Otro objetivo conseguido por el Sr Canterbury.
Congratulations.

Cool that was quite neat, and it sounds as though you are having a lot of fun.
Nice job Dave. Now I want to see you shave some slices off the tinder fungus, char them as you would char cloth and get an ember using flint and steel.

Loving these in depth vids, thanks.
Very cool Dave! Great Job! ATB Sepp
Great video. Not sure what the fungus is that we have around here but I'm going experiment with it now.
Awesome video dave.
thank's Dave,
Another great trick for my back go tricks. Good info.

What happens to a pile of horsehoof fungus/tinder fungus dust when sparked with a ferro rod?
you should try this with the hand drill method with a string at the top of the spindle and 2 loops on it with a notch at the top of the spindle for the string to go into. i recently found some horse hoof and its awesome straight off the tree it took a spark from a ferro rod when i made it into dust

Another awesome learning experience!
Did you make or purchase the metal arrowhead piece that you use to hold the drill part? If you purchased it where can I get one. Thank you again for the video.
may also try pine sap and horeshoe fungi to the bow drill technique,, maybe a pinch of fff blackpowder
Let's learn together huh? Awesome Dave!
Good Idea of this guy ! I´d be interested, if it is easier with this fungus than with wood. I mean, is it easier to find this fungus in good dry condition than a peace of wood ?
What's that arrowhead thing all about?
Where can I buy that Pathfinder Hand Hold? I didn't see it on the website.
Im curious as well if it came directly off the tree ?
I like the knife. I say the green river style butcher knives are the best frontier mans knives ever made.
Went looking for the forum, but didn't see it... can you give us a link?
I met this old guy at a lake we used to camp at and he was doing this with that horsehoof fungus. I actually forgot all about it until this video.
I thought that was called horse saddle.
Life is Learning, we learn as we go.
With that being fungus it isn't going to be as forgiving as wood when it's damp outside, will it? Still good to know, though!
Nice! was your horse hoof fungus dried out any or straight off the tree?
i think dry as he is at the classroom and in other vids he has it in his fire kit hope that helps
VERY NICE .....The best part in my opinion is you don't give up much like my self .....lmao....watch to many episodes of NAKED N AFRAID ....were they just give up .....hope to shake your hand one day .... :)
was the fungis fresh or had it been dried?
Dave, prickets Fort is about 5 miles from me to bad I can't be there ,
I thought you were going to use friction to make the surface of the fungus combust, rather than create a separate ember.
Nothing like learning!
Would a knife like that old hickory one be suitable for a bushcraft/survival/ hunting knife? Love your vids. From the UK, Rock on Brother
I would say yes, that's why they keep it there for students to use that bring the wrong knife with them. :)
Good point, another question i feel like 7 inches is a bit long (you're opinion?) is there a shorter version as i like the style but are just unsure of the length of the blade, thoughts? Thanks brother :D
i have a raccoon hide and i salted it but left it for way too long and now its raw hide can i save it
Well done!
I find this one hard. Chaga however works like a champ.
i really wanted to see if it would work to dave,,you may have just created charred dust that might take a spark to brother..you sure started something now since its called the false tinder fungus ..nice brother..
..bill
Fantastic.
That's cool!!
Thanks for the video
I love your fire school videos! But I wood like to see some hunting how to videos if you can
Think you
Nice, I didn't know it was possible.
Never doubted ya for a minute...well actually I did but anyway...nice job
That fungus is kinda rare isn't it?
Tier 1 of woodscraft
Awesome
Wow! Dave I never heard you huff and puff lol That must have been a job to get that fungus to give an ember. JK I doubt I could have made it if it gave you such a hard time.
What a video to post as your 900th!!
Nice!.
Nice video! Your white beard and long hear makes you look like a bad ass. Reminds me of Snake from Metal Gear Solid.
