Montreal's Most Thrilling Attraction

- The infamous Lachine Rapids of Montreal are a 3-mile long series of Class 5 rapids in the Saint Lawrence River made up of large year-round standing waves, ranking 2nd in North America for largest runnable rapids by total water volume (after the Colorado River). Historically, they were known for being extremely dangerous and un-passable to ships, and were the reason the French explorers chose to port nearby in 1535, giving birth to the city of Montreal. Today, the rapids attract thrill seekers from around the world who are drawn to the many unique water activities it offers, including kayaking, river surfing, whitewater rafting and jet boating, all within a 10 minute ride of Downtown Montreal.

I learned about this jet boat today, this is now in my bucket list. Hopefully by 2022 we will be able to go, if Covid-19 safety guidelines permit it. Viva Quebec, greetings from a Mexican amigo in Arizona.
I won a free ride through Chom, It was pretty cool don't sit in front cause if you get hit by a wave it's like a cement wall. Middle or back if you want to be safe.
You forgot to show our roads... the potholes are something else to see and for sure an attraction
Small solar systems within the potholes..
If you fall in one of these you endup in China, quite the ride
There isnt any pot holes.. there are just little bits of road surrounding divets!
Yes, there is enormous Mafia involvement in Montreal's road system. Ottawa has the exact same climate as Montreal, but the roads there are in much better condition.
@@antonboludo8886 I agree.
The shampoo thing killed me lol
😂
That mohawk lol
Awesome video! My bucket list is to one day visit Canada, especially MONTREAL.. I want to ride on this jet wave boat!
it’s weird how a natural feature like these rapids were once so feared and hated back in the day. and now look at the enjoyment people get out of it. i went whitewater rafting in Colorado, was amazing!
So true!
Did this about 25 years ago and i live 15 minutes away. Great ride that i should do again.
ive biked past these rapids a few times last year on my longer bike runs. those fisherman out in the shallow calm areas are a tad bit crazy...
Be careful that you're not arrested for having fun...
I know about it cause i live there
Great! Unfortunately so many people don’t 🙁
@@DiscoverMontréal My hometown, greetings from ns. Great video!
Do they allow you to take pictures or videos?
Yes! But it may need to be attached to you.
Would love to do this! Any idea on the cost?
I'm sure you'll find it online, Montreal Saute Mouton.
FYI, in summer the Saint Lawrence water temperature gets as high as 25C near Montreal.
Oh wow much higher than we thought that’s good to know thank you!
A kid on my high school bus drowned there on a rafting tour back in the late 1980s.
😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻 Fantastic!
ok so princess diana doesnt bother anymore to hide herself now
Also aren't there rocks you can get hurt on there?
Yes that's why it's best to go with experts who know what they're doing!
@@DiscoverMontréal lol ok.
That water is so dirty 🤮
So the thumbnail picture is Île Ste-Hélène before it was expended because of the construction of the metro and yet this video is about a tourist trap in Old Port ? Get your shit right .
100% incorrect. That is Îles-aux-Hérons right next to the Lachine Rapids, which is what this video is about.
@@DiscoverMontréal I can see this island from my place.. The coolest thing about these jet boats is you hear the roaaaar 1st and a few seconds later it's screams lol
So, where's the Jacques Cartier bridge?
The best attraction in montreal is watching the shit float down the river.
The Lachine rapids are actually one of the main reasons Montréal even exists. The first european explorers planned on going way further inland but their ships could not get past the rapids.
The construction of Montreal is actually the sole reason that the Lachine rapids even exists. The governor wanted to protect the city, therefore they built the rapids.
Montréal was chosen because of all the waterways that lead to the island. Nouvelle France economy was based on fur trade , it was the best place to install a trading post . The rapids were not that much of a problem .
@@claudeturgeon385 I'm pretty sure I read that in Jacques Lacoursière's books. It's been a while though, I might remember it wrong. We should ask Jacques. :)
@@anthonyboca3176 lolwut? no.
I'm a Montrealer and I had no clue this jet boating existed. I just added a new THINGS TO DO on my bucket list.
Yeah, especially since we can’t go anywhere
Love Montreal. Just move there. Definitely gonna do those rapids either way.
Exciting! Welcome!
@Coconut Lady beautiful indeed
See the guy in my avatar? This is my ancestor, he was captain of a boat that sink few km from Lachine. Look for Cecilia L. Shipwreck if you want to know more of montreal history.
True story, I live nearby, right there along the seaway (Lasalle) where surfers and jet boats go nuts
Texas
Neighbours. Guess it's mostly montrealers watching Montreal videos.
@@landrewmackinnon4888 Covid Times
@@landrewmackinnon4888 better than Toronto. I am working on my french so I can move there once I finish up my schooling.
Looks like fun. Once Covid passes I will visit. I haven't been to Montreal in a long time
I did this a few years ago for part of my bud's bachelor party, it was nuts! one of the groomsmen puked all over the ladies in front and we were crying laughing. By the way no shout out to Dave McMillan at 3:57 on the right? one of the most known chefs in Montreal?
I've been living in Montreal for the past 26 years and didn't even know about this😶 Let me revoke my own Montrealer card 🤦🏾♀️😂
How did I not know this was a thing?
Welcome to Montréal, eh!
My buddy grew up in LaSalle and took us to the Lachine rapids all the time.
I want to do this so much!!! Montreal, I am coming to see you soon!
😳😁🤪😂😂😂👌 this is super fun!
The video is hilarious to see people's reactions and the joy that they demonstrate.
Indeed a unique opportunity/experience
my boy Johnny Bananas!!!!
Alex from MTL blog
everyone in Montreal, or at least, from the province of Quebec, knows about Saute-Mouton! haha
Grew up and live in Lachine, can vouch that no one in Montreal knows we exist, at least before COVID hit, now everyone’s found us somehow, finally, i still absolutely love it here
Amazing when this covic is done i am coming looks alot of fun cant wait
I have lived the majority of my life in Lachine and have passed this jetboat 10,000 times without ever having the urge to do it, rather I go to a park on the edge of the rapids, tie myself off to a tree and I stand so close to the rapids to fish, that I get water in my mouth. (Drinking the areas lake water is Not recommended).
St Laurent,
Actually should be said,
Polluted to the core from industries around it and no fresh water is here,
Water is filled with waste and old rusted metal, many bodies as well
Wow. I've lived in Montreal for 50 years, and never knew this existed.
Being told we're the second largest city is a terrible start. My city is the métropole .
Live near Moncton now, but this definitely brings me back to Montréal. And let’s not forget the food you can eat in this area too. Can’t wait to go back.
This is a wonderful spot, I used to run everyday along those rapide . There is a wonderful small trail along the wather you can feel you are in Montreal. in the summer time i used to refresh me in the water from the arsh summer. my best memories back in Montreal
what the Jonny Bananas is going on here!
I live in Montreal the water around the island isn't fresh water it's dirty now
Did the Saute Mouton when I was 13. A lot of fun!
Weird, they definitely don't look like Class V...
I've known about it for many years, even though I have never done it, at least not yet, LOL.
Why am I not surfing ? I’d like to do that this year
You should do it! When it gets warmer 😂🏄
Cool!
Everyone knows the saute mouton it’s been around for at least two decades lol.
I did it on my very first trip to Montreal in July 1989, so that’s 32 years ago. The owner said they had been operating for 37 years. It was terrifying and thrilling!
I live 45min from there and never heard about it
Me: goes by the edge of the water near Jacques Cartier Brige... looks at color of the water and smell................ (gagging up)
MMMM.. ... NAH!
😂
Near the shore it's normal and you'll get that feeling near any clean lake at times, you have to boat it away, water is clean, been there numerous times
No tengo saldo de verdad y si
I do this one once
🤔 the surfing sounds fun
WOWZeR!!!
Hey Cindy!! I was just telling Karen and Melanie we should do a cousins day on the rapids!
@@janasali821 Who are you
@@cynthiaalt9745 Cindy... How can you not remember Jana from book club?? Ya silly goose!

J'ai fait le Saute-Mouton 3 fois et j'y retournerai certainement.
I experienced Saute-Mouton 3 times and I will surely return.
I loves the experience as well.
Too bad there has been an 8pm curfew in Montreal since Jan. 8
Had the pleasure of enjoying this experience this past Grand Prix weekend. HIGHLY recommended!
That's awesome!
This is kinda of a pleb filter
"surf in Montréal" is a well kept secret. Unfortunatly i don't surf, even if i am a local. 😕😕☹️
When it comes to surfing in Montreal, the real locals are those who live close to the rapids. The rest are just regular city folks. It's easy to forget you even live on an island when you spend most of your time in Rosemont / Plateau / Mile-End / Parc-Ex/ NDG / etc.
Why why why nobody told me about this?
I’m going ASAP
Are you #$#$king kidding me. With a phony pandemic how the hell can anyone ride that boat with a mask on. Sorry Discover Montreal but Im too jaded at this point to get excited about a boat trip I can't take.
plandemic
scamdemic
@@onmykneesforYehova exactly.
So the pandemic is phony? So this is one heck of a global conspiracy which of course must employ co-conspirators in every country of the world. As well it is being kept up remarkably by these co-conspirators for over a year now... To what end? Who stands to benefit that they could organize such an event? People like you who make these erroneous ridiculous comments should provide information about themselves so the rest of us could point and say:”Yup. There you go. There’s the problem right there.” Please. Thou the conspiracy theorist; reveal thyself!
Mon amour pour toi est infini!♥️
Buried my dad's ashes into mid rapids from one of those boats
Huh? Your dad died in saute mouton? I'm sorry for your loss
Oh no....he enjoyed his youth playing in the rapids so that's where we buried him.
should this say instead of montreals but that of CANADA lets promote ALL of CANADA not just parts of it besides now that place is nothing but a festering hole of crime and pollution
I hope that the surfers and kayakers etc. take a nice soapy decontamination shower afterwards. Below is an inconclusive report on the water quality.
Due to industrialization over the past 100 years, the sediments at the bottom of the Lachine Canal and Bay have become contaminated. This study investigated the heavy metal accumulation mechanisms within the Lachine Canal sediments and was carried out in three phases. The Phase I, 28 parameters were measured on 44 sediment samples collected along the Lachine Canal and Bay. The results revealed the presence of a wide variety of both organic and inorganic contaminants. Heavy metals such as Zn < Pb < Cr < Ni < Cu < Cd (in order of decreasing abundance) in addition to organic contaminants (PAHs < MAHs < PCBs) were found in high concentrations exceeding background concentrations and various quality criteria levels. The total load of both organic and inorganic contaminants was found to be higher in the canal than in the bay zone. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate sediment assessment values with respect to known adsorptive phases such as % clay fraction, TOC (Total Organic Carbon), and % CaCO3. Although a positive correlation existed between % clay fraction or TOC and the total cumulative load of heavy metals, the correlation could not be assessed as conclusive. Significant correlations were obtained between Pb, Ni, and Zn and the carbonate content of the sediments. Pollution Indices (PI) were used according to the format proposed by Canadian authorities and as such were evaluated as incomplete.
Enjoy what Montréal has to offer but be careful about your water sports activities around the island.
Ciao from Little Italy 🇮🇹 Montréal
What the water quality like?
Multiple cities drop their feces in that river lol
Where the Saint Lawrence meets Montreal the water is clear and swimming is allowed. The Lachine Rapids are a further along though. The good thing is that the water quality has been steadily improving since the 1990s.
@@NinjaRem09 there you go.
I guess it there is strong volume bacteria would be less. Funny I never hear anything about testing and numbers.
Water is fine here, it's worst upstream from Ontario but lake St-Louis is pretty much filtering it, in Montréal it's fine, anyway, look at the splashes, it's all white and clean, well oxygenated.
Buzzing with activity? Is that a joke?
What do you mean?
Aye! Local Montréal UA-camrs!
Just don't go the same day Catherine McKenna releases all the raw sewage haha
And yet, Victoria BC has been releasing 100% of its sewage in the Pacific ocean 365 days a year, since.... its foundation!
But still everyone in Canada keeps bugging us for an event that lasted exactly 5 days - a few years ago.
@@erictremblay4940 That's because the west hates the east and the east hates the west But the east will win because the west is dying a slow death thanks to the east
Nice commercial - how about showing us where we can access the rapids on our own an not pay $$ for the tours.
Parc des Rapides is the nicest spot to see the rapids. Just venturing into them is not encouraged without a professional who knows what they’re doing.
well, hope you have good health insurance because they are brutal.
There are no fences and riding on the seaway is not monitored, step on your boat and go wherever, i might see you pass by for a few seconds, and help you out of the water after
There are 2 popular spots to surf all you want. Vague à Guy (access under renovation now) and Expo 67 further down ...
Dude.... Lachine rapids... try looking in Lachine.
