First of all thank you so much for making this video. I was wondering, will this help the fluid re-absorb into the blood? I've watched bursitis drainage videos and am afraid to have it sucked out :P
Hi, I want this worksheet, but I have a question. My PCM diagnosed me with Bursitis in my knees and I never had pain, just swelled and a burning sensation, I haven’t had swelling in maybe two weeks... It’s ok do this stretching?
I've been struggling with knee bursitis for over a week. My doctor suggested doing some physio to strengthen my leg, but because of Covid I'm a bit reluctant to visit an office. I literally came across this video this morning, did the routine, and I feel so much relief. I'm going to make sure I start my day off with these exercises as much as possible. Thank you!
Wow! Just wow! I’ve was diagnosed with “water on the knee” when I was 11 and prepatellar bursitis as an adult - I recently started running and doing squats and other strength training and it flared up, well! I can feel the difference from doing these exercises just the once! Can’t wait to carry on with them and not live with knee pain - thank you dr jo!!
I have pes anserine bursistis, that I got from running, and just wanted to say that I love your videos. Your good mood just makes me want to feel better. Thanks Jo!
With COVID19, I’m not able to get an appointment with my chiropractor and I just developed bursitis in my right knee while gardening yesterday. The exercises in this video have already been immensely relieving even after just one session. Thank you for making these exercises accessible!
You have helped me more than all the doctors, surgeons and medical websites put together! With knee bursitis due to arthritis I was told to just rest and take antiflam meds ice packs on the inflamed area. It was almost getting worse. Until I came across your videos. Wow! It was a miraculous loosening up of my stiff knee and immediate relief from pain. Thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!.
Wow! I’ve been having knee pain for 2 months and your stretch is the only thing that’s helped and only after doing them once! Amazing! Thanks so much!!
Thanks doctor I will be doing these tomorrow. I've been having that prepatellar bursitis which won't let me do my exercise routine for more than a month already. Went to the doctor and they didn't say much or at least refer me to a PT. Glad I found this video.
A big thank you for your great excercise video for bursitis. They are helping so much. & appreciate your help & advice available for all. Thank you Dr Jo
Thank You Dr Jo feel so much better after first try. Your video help me in the past as well to cure my femoral patella syndrome. I really appreciated you to put these videos on UA-cam.
Thank you so much for these I fell off a wall chasing our escaped rabbits in October, had to have my knee glued and it was right on the patella. I’m a runner & rested for 5 weeks I think I went back to running too soon and damaged it and now an x ray has shown soft tissue damage & I need an ultrasound. I can’t run at min which is super hard but these exercises already help relieve it I’ll keep doing them and hold it eases. Thank you so much for your kindness 🙏♥️
So glad I tried these exercises. My knee is very swollen. On the second rep of the exercise with the towel under knee I felt the Bakers Cyst get squeezed right out, with the noise and sensation I thought I did some damage. But no pain and was able to bend knee further without pain straight after. Pain at back of knee is gone. Thanks.
Your videos are incredibly helpful and your funny personality makes them enjoyable to watch. I'm an avid hiker, like to do 10+ miles a day in the Sierras and a few months ago started having knee pain. The MRI of my left knee showed mild extensor tendinosis and mild posteromedial bursal inflammation. After weeks of rest and no improvement the doc gave me a depo medrol shot 2 days ago so maybe that will help. I'm watching almost all your videos and have starting doing many of your exercises. Just trying to dial down which ones would be the most helpful. They're so many! Thanks for your great videos
Thanks, and you're welcome! I would probably focus on hamstring stretches. Do you have access to a pool? You can do water walking, or aqua jogging, as well as general exercises in the water (I have several aquatic videos too), but it is low impact so it doesn't tend to irritate an injury. Bursitis can be pretty tricky because you still need to stretch and exercise, but find that happy middle ground of working it, but not too much where it irritates it more. Good luck!
Just walking the dog around a couple blocks made the back of my legs slightly swell last night, so I guess even walking is too much impact? The water videos I have not watched yet but I will now. Thanks for the suggestions Doctor Jo!
These stretches and exercises really do help! Thanks for the video! Right now II can only do three sets of five with the last two exercises...the straight leg raise and the one for the hip abductors. But I know that I can increase those eventually to sets of ten, and then higher. These will become part of my daily morning routine. I want this bursitis to heal, and never come back. I wonder if I should do these exercises for my other leg as a preventative against knee injury. What is your opinion?
Thank you very much for exercises. I tried all of them despite i have carpal tunnel syndrome. It was hard to pull the string but they helped me to get rid of burning pain in my knee. It is good that the last two did not involve the pulling. Thanks again!
A Big thanks to you Dr.Jo.😊 I was struggling with knee bursitis for nearly 1.5 month, I couldn't even sleep peacefully, went to hospital took medications, did some basic exercises but nothing worked much...then I saw your video I'm doing these stretches for 2days now nd my knee feels absolutely fine! I am back to my routine with some healthy stretching exercises now! I feel energetic.thanks a lot❤🙏
Thanks Dr. Jo for this exercise. I have been feeling stiffness on my right knee for years but this exercise helps lighten the stiffness. Appreciate your effort with CC on the video!
Dr Jo, I am so glad I found your channel here on youtube. This video and your video for hip bursitis stretches have been a GODSEND. Thank you so much! And keep it up with the great videos.
I have had pain in my knee ever since riding a century tour in NYC. I stayed off the bike for 5 months and it still hurt. I just had a shot into the knee that was to alleviate the pain but it is still there. I will now do these stretches every day. Thanks hope it helps me.
Thanks Dr Jo. Is it ok to do the strengthening when the bursa is inflamed, or should I just do the stretches until it the inflammation goes down first , and then work on the strengthening later. ?
I really appreciate the information. I’ve started doing these. My goal is to get back to squatting with weights. How often should I do these? And should I wait for the ache to completely go away before I start squatting? Thanks again for the vid!
Doctor Jo, you are the best! Your stretches are the best, they force the immense relax and even make me sleepy. It’s the best indication to me. Thank you very much’
hi ! my doctor diagnosed me is pes anserine brutitis & a slightly torn meniscus. will these exercises help heal this ? and how long is the usual recovery ? thank you :)
+alisha dominguez Hopefully they will help. It really depends on how severe each is. The torn meniscus also depends on where the tear is. It might be worth going to a PT for at least 1-2 sessions to get exercises specific to you. Good luck.
Hi there, Are there any modifications you would make to this program for prepatellar bursitis specifically? I had it diagnosed today from an MRI, but it's been stubborn for a couple months now so I'm wondering what I could be doing wrong. Thanks!
This is very helpful to me. Do you have any stretches for the tendons behind the knee--in the bend of the knee. That's what bothers me most after exercise. Thanks!
Very beneficial To Me. Question 1: do I do this on a Daily basis? Question 2: Do I Do this Before or After My fitness workout? Thanks in Advance, Michael
Thank you so much for posting this great video. I definitely have bursitis (I started martial arts a few weeks ago, but my legs are not in good shape). My knees are stiff, locking and so swollen. These exercises are very helpful and I can't thank you enough! :) Is there anything you recommend to help with my knee stiffness/locking? (I can't even bend my knees properly right now).
Kiwami24 You're welcome! I'm glad they are helping! I sometimes recommend stretching in a warm bath or in the shower, so the muscles can loosen up with the warm water. Good luck!
Thank you for this video! 3 days after doing these stretches 3 times a day Most of my pain is gone! The swelling is slower at going I keep my knee wrapped
Hi Dr Jo! I have stopped exercising since i was diagnosed with mild bursitis in my knee. The problem is that I have gained weight since then and i think is making the bursitis worst! ups. Do you have a list of exercises that are a no no while your bursitis recovers? I know squats or jumping are not recommended. What about biking or strength training that don't involve too much knee work? I have the one at the back of the knee towards the bottom. Thanks!
+mdefelix I usually go with "don't do it if it hurts." A flared up bursa will let you know pretty quickly what you can and can't do. The back of the knee? That sounds a little more like a Baker's cyst. Have you been to the doctor yet?
Hi Doctor Jo. Thanks for your videos. Could you please advise on what exercises to do for suprapatellar bursitis? Would slow-moving squats help or worsen it? Why does this bursa slightly swell and redden after a long walk? No accompanying fever. Thanks so much! Jas
So I love art, I cant really sit at my desk because I have t4 syndrome that affects my back so I been kneeling as it doesnt hurt my back but now I've seemed to develop what sounds like bursitis in my knee. I've had it for 2 days, been rubbing ice, pulped ginger, and resting it but once I've healed a little more I will do some exercises.
Thank you so much! I've been in agony for the past couple of weeks and, after your stretches, I pain had near disappeared. The quad stretch, however, I couldn't hold as the pain was too much for even a gentle stretch. I imagine when I continue to stretching that pain will ease too? Thanks again.
What a great channel! I have been going for a few physio treatments and I really like the relief of ultrasound on my knee. I was looking at purchasing a home unit online. Just wondered if you had any thoughts on the effectiveness of these machines? Thx!
+JenuineAirbrushTan Thanks! It really depends on what you are using it for. The research is pretty mixed, showing that it is beneficial for tendonitis, but more of the placebo effect for other uses. I have had many patients really benefit from it, placebo effect or not! My thoughts are, if you feel like it is helping and you have the money to purchase one, it is probably worth it. Good luck!
How soon after I was diagnosed with bursitis can I start these stretches & exercises? I went to my doc last week and he told me to rest my damaged leg/knee and gave me a zinc oxide bandage for inflammation but ever since I removed that I feel like the pain got worse especially since I kinda feel like my leg is getting weaker from not doing any exercise whatsoever...I am also bow legged so I wonder if that would affect these exercises in any way??
V Marton You can definitely start these, but make sure you are gentle with them. Yes, the worst thing to do is nothing. Unfortunately, that is what is recommended often. I don't think being bow legged will make a difference. Good luck!
Hey Dr. Jo, thanks for the great video. How often/when should I do these stretches and exercises? Should I be combining it with ice/heat/compression therapy?
Romaion You're welcome! I would try to do them 2-3 times a day. I would recommend an ice massage as well. If it is bursitis, then you probably don't want to do heat or compression right now. If it is tendonitis, then that would be okay. Here is a link to the ice massage: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/ice-massage-tendonitis-or-bursitis Good luck!
My videos for a torn meniscus and knee osteoarthritis might help since those are what cause a baker's cyst. You can find them at: ua-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo
Hey Doc thank you for sharing these tips. I am suffering with this in one knee. It's been months now. With this condition weightlifting is a good thing? ( deadlift, lunges only) no squats.
Thx Dr Joe I finally got relief ... how many times a day should I do them. I had bursitis of the knee for 3 weeks after gardening. Ouch kneeling too much
if your bursa is inflamed, are these exercises safe to do in pain. My PT suggested that I still exercise since my muscles and quads are weak. also how often should I do it for pain relief?
You're welcome. It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
Just found your video...looks like a great set of exercises! Question: I had a double knee injury about 5 years ago...doctor told me permanent chronic bursitis (being double jointed doesnt help, I guess). I was doing decent until I fell down a hill the other day. I iced right away, took some aleve, and have been doing my tens until regularly since then. In your opinion, is it too soon to start these exercises?
I just loved the exercises ...I think I have got knee bursitis..but I am not sure about it. Sometimes there is a slight swelling in the right knee area , towards the right. And the swelling is painful too. I find it very difficult to sit cross legged on the floor and to kneel down. Is it knee bursitis?
You're welcome. It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
Hi doctor Jo! I am an active Jiu Jitsu competitor so I put a lot of wear on my knees, I am currently dealing with infrapatellar bursitis and I must say that since I've started watching your videos and doing the exercises and stretches you've shown, the swelling has gone down and as well as the pain is getting better, I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos!
+AskDoctorJo I know with bursitis I am not suppose to do vigorous exercise nor just be ideal, could you recommend some cardio/conditioning exercises that I would be able to do until my bursitis gets 100%? I do have access to a pool as well but not sure what I should and shouldn't do, I am just weary to put my bursitis more at risk. Thanks Dr.Jo.
+Gabe A The pool would be a great place because then you can take impact out of it: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/deep-water-cardio-exercises-pool Good luck!
I know this video is from a while ago but hopefully someone can help. My pain fits the description of bursitis BUT it's only super painful when I put pressure on it, like kneeling while cleaning. Could it be bursitis if it is not consistent pain? Thanks for this video! Your channel is super informative and helpful! ❤
You're welcome! That sounds a little more like chondromalacia. These might help: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/patellofemoral-syndrome-exercises Good luck.
Hello Dr Jo, I'm aged 66 and while trying to lose weight and regain my previous levels of mobility, I've tried using my exercise bike to help with it. But what I'm now learning is infrapatellar(?) bursitis, is making it extremely difficult to use my bike, due to considerable pain while cycling, in both my knees. I need to clarify, I've experienced this pain for a couple of years and not because me using my bike caused the injury. I also cannot kneel and lean back anymore without experiencing that same painful reaction. Will the exercises in this video help to eventually overcome this problem, or are there more specific routines I can work on to help with my bursitis?
Dr Jo, this has been so helpful. This is my second flareup of bursitis in my knee (the first one was last August and took me a couple of months to get fully back to normal). I'm wondering if there is anything I can do in the future to keep this from occurring again down the road? Also, do I need to baby this knee, as I tend to do (fearful that it might happen again)? Thanks so much.
Thanks, and you're welcome. Do you know what's causing it? Did you have an injury? Sometimes it keeps recurring because something else is out of alignment (maybe in the hips, back or feet).
Can you please tell me more about this alignment you mentioned? Since I didn't have any obvious injury that I know of, perhaps this is the problem. Who does this and what is involved? I'm new to this so thanks so much for your advice.
Probably not just getting an adjustment, but more like finding out if you have imbalances in your muscles. For example, you have tightness on one side of your low back, it might cause you to lean more one way, and then put increased pressure on that side/knee. If you can, really the best thing to do would be to get an evaluation from a physical therapist who can look at all that and try to narrow down what is going on.
It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
How long does it take for bursitis to heal? I tripped over my (large) dog and landed hard on our concrete floor - my doctor recommended rest, ice, and Tylenol...and while I’m about 90% recovered, I still have some soreness and I have to be VERY careful when kneeling. If I roll onto the upper part of my kneecap (suprapatellar) at all, I still have severe pain 6 months later.

3 days after doing these stretches 3 times a day
Most of my pain is gone!
The swelling is slower at going
I keep my knee wrapped
You're welcome!
Thanks Doctor, how often do you recommend doing this routine?
You're welcome. Therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day.
Have you been to the doctor yet?
thanks! I did see a doctor and it seems that is over tightness of my upper calf muscle. Thanks so much!
Hi Doctor Jo. Thanks for your videos. Could you please advise on what exercises to do for suprapatellar bursitis? Would slow-moving squats help or worsen it? Why does this bursa slightly swell and redden after a long walk? No accompanying fever. Thanks so much! Jas
You had saved me at least 3 times 🙏🏼
So I love art, I cant really sit at my desk because I have t4 syndrome that affects my back so I been kneeling as it doesnt hurt my back but now I've seemed to develop what sounds like bursitis in my knee. I've had it for 2 days, been rubbing ice, pulped ginger, and resting it but once I've healed a little more I will do some exercises.
I hope they help. Good luck.
Thank you so much! I've been in agony for the past couple of weeks and, after your stretches, I pain had near disappeared. The quad stretch, however, I couldn't hold as the pain was too much for even a gentle stretch. I imagine when I continue to stretching that pain will ease too? Thanks again.
You're welcome!
Good luck!
+AskDoctorJo you are awesome thank you! 😊
+JenuineAirbrushTan Thanks, and you're welcome!
Awesome. Thanks again Dr. Jo.
Romaion You're welcome! I hope they help!
Thank you will try this.
You're welcome.
Are there any particular exercises you'd recommend for a baker's cyst? (Also have torn meniscus and osteoarthritis)
My videos for a torn meniscus and knee osteoarthritis might help since those are what cause a baker's cyst. You can find them at: ua-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo
Hi! Just watching for the first time! Do you think pairing these with mat Pilates could help me as well?
Hey Doc thank you for sharing these tips. I am suffering with this in one knee. It's been months now. With this condition weightlifting is a good thing? ( deadlift, lunges only) no squats.
Thx Dr Joe I finally got relief ... how many times a day should I do them. I had bursitis of the knee for 3 weeks after gardening. Ouch kneeling too much
You're welcome. They can be done 2-3 times a day.
AskDoctorJo thank you so much
if your bursa is inflamed, are these exercises safe to do in pain. My PT suggested that I still exercise since my muscles and quads are weak. also how often should I do it for pain relief?
Yes, it's okay to still do them. If you can, 1-2 times a day. Good luck.
Does ur bursitis gone
Hey jo! Thanks for this. Question, how often per day do you recommend doing this?
You're welcome. It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
Just found your video...looks like a great set of exercises! Question: I had a double knee injury about 5 years ago...doctor told me permanent chronic bursitis (being double jointed doesnt help, I guess). I was doing decent until I fell down a hill the other day. I iced right away, took some aleve, and have been doing my tens until regularly since then. In your opinion, is it too soon to start these exercises?
I think it's okay to start them as long as they don't increase the pain. Good luck.
Awesome, thanks for the quick response!
You're welcome!
Thank you fellow Gamecock for posting these helpful stretches and exercises!
You're welcome! 🐔🤙
Love her! Great explanation of exercises, and Go Gamecocks!!!
Thanks! Go Gamecocks!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
You're welcome!
How often a week should we do them? Everyday or 3 times a week? Thanks felt instant relief after these stretches.
You're welcome. It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
@@AskDoctorJo yeah done it earlier and had instant relief she's aching a bit there now so gonna crack on again with another few sets. Cheers
+Gabe A You're welcome! I'm so glad they are helping. Good luck with your competitions!
Really needed this so bad ❤❤
Thank you best doctor ❤
You're welcome.
Hello Dr Jo,
I'm aged 66 and while trying to lose weight and regain my previous levels of mobility, I've tried using my exercise bike to help with it. But what I'm now learning is infrapatellar(?) bursitis, is making it extremely difficult to use my bike, due to considerable pain while cycling, in both my knees.
I need to clarify, I've experienced this pain for a couple of years and not because me
using my bike caused the injury.
That's interesting. Do you think getting aligned by a chiropractor would help?
Can you please tell me more about this alignment you mentioned? Since I didn't have any obvious injury that I know of, perhaps this is the problem. Who does this and what is involved? I'm new to this so thanks so much for your advice.
Probably not just getting an adjustment, but more like finding out if you have imbalances in your muscles. For example, you have tightness on one side of your low back, it might cause you to lean more one way, and then put increased pressure on that side/knee. If you can, really the best thing to do would be to get an evaluation from a physical therapist who can look at all that and try to narrow down what is going on.
Very helpful
Heem Royal Thanks! Good luck!
Thanks Dr. Jo!
Diane Hochmuth You're welcome! Good luck!
Thanks!
You're welcome, and thank you for your support!
How often should these stretches and exercises be done? Every day?
It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
How long does it take for bursitis to heal? I tripped over my (large) dog and landed hard on our concrete floor - my doctor recommended rest, ice, and Tylenol...and while I’m about 90% recovered, I still have some soreness and I have to be VERY careful when kneeling. If I roll onto the upper part of my kneecap (suprapatellar) at all, I still have severe pain 6 months later.
