    I really hope SpaceX’s mars sample mission is just “well we will land starship there, our astronaut will walk over and grab the samples and we will bring them back”

      Their mission proposal does involve Starship but makes use of Perseverance itself to drop off the samples on the mars ascent vehicle that would be inside the Starship lander.

    Once Starship goes into orbit they can keep it there as long as needed to catch the booster, safe it, and remove it from the OLM. Then Starship can leave orbit and return to be caught by the chopsticks.

    Looking forward to something closer to a full orbit for future Starship tests. The original test flight plan from a couple years ago was for Starship to splash down in the Pacific somewhere north of Hawaii. And then SpaceX revised their plans to the Indian Ocean.
    Hopefully, they'll get more ambitious with their flight test plans in the coming months.
    A full orbit with a splashdown somewhere east of Florida's Space Coast would be good, sometime in the first half of 2025.

    • @ryanhamstra49
      @ryanhamstra49 8 годин тому +3

      Yeah, orbit is the next obvious step. The question is if they need to do one more flight to prove they can reignite the engines in orbit. Someone told me that that was a requirement to get an orbital license but I couldn’t find any proof one way or another

    • @zachb1706
      @zachb1706 8 годин тому

      @@ryanhamstra49the requirement is that you can prove to the FAA that it’s safe. New Glenn will launch to orbit on its first flight for example and the upper stages will need to reenter.
      SpaceX could do so without a launch, but they like doing it practically

    feel like ship recovery is still a long ways off. not like they wouldn't be able to but the regulatory side is gonna push that back to maybe even 2026. for ship recovery they will need to make at least 1 orbit and get approval to reenter over Mexico and US. if something goes wrong, like it desintegrates or the flaps stop working it could fall short. for the booster that doesn't matter bc it comes back from the sea side. if something goes wrong there it will just hit the ocean. i would be very surprised if they get a launch license for that that quickly.
    like we cant forget how big starship is. its a lot bigger than the spaceshuttle and made out of very heatresistant stuff that could rain down all over the place

    A huge mobile canopy, either wheeled or on rails, can be positioned near the launch site so right after Starship liftoff it can be rolled over the launch mount then locked down on the ground to protect the launch mount from heavy booster landing flames.
    In addition to sending Optimus robots on the first landing mission to Mars, not just to go along for the ride but to do some serious work, Musk should send a boring machine to land on Mars. Maybe those Optimus robots could make some underground habitats. And why not a sample return mission on this first Starship Mars landing mission.

    • @echomande4395
      @echomande4395 7 годин тому

      Pad 2's launch mount looks to be very different and if it works better I would not be too surprised to see Pad 1's mount torn down and replaced with a copy of pad 2's mount.
      Pad 2's hardware might be built as modules. Build them with armor yes, but also quick to replace. There is that big crane that lives there after all and maybe the chopsticks could be used for the heavy lifting.
      A cover dome or plate (leave a cutout for the QD hardware) might work, maybe if it was run on rails. Moving it into place would be a time sensitive operation though. The hard part might be preventing damage to the shield and its rails or other handling system during launch.
