I'm learning Chinese, Korean, Japanese and French on my own, Spanish in school, and I'm fluent in English and Portuguese (I'm from Brazil) I’m 12 years old, but I’m still learning many languages, because I want to go to many places when I grow up, I don’t want to stay in Brazil, I want to go to another country right away, lmao
hey rin! I am chinese and I am confident to say that I am flUeNT in chinese... a few tips for anyone trying to learn chinese~ rin you prob already know how to read pinyin, therefore reading books in chinese with pinyin on top of characters (does this make sense) will definitely help, that was how we learned how to recognize/remember the characters as children. I can tell from your video that you probably read the pinyin text out loud, and that definitely helps too! I also noticed myself losing my chinese after moving to Canada, a way for me to try to remember how to write chinese would be writing my diary entry in chinese everyday, if you can’t remember how to write something then write it in pinyin, and that definitely counts as practice too! But overall I think the fastest way for someone to be improving would be reading, since you learn both characters and grammar from reading. Or also watching some chinese youtubers or variety shows? You’re doing really great!!! Keep it up!!! (you can also talk to me to practice if you want hehe 😉)
the journal is a good idea! i'll have to try that out, though i've forgotten how to write a lot of characters 😩 and i was practicing reading characters in the video! that's why i was reading so slowly hehe and why i quit so early on lmao i get really frustrated trying to read characters. i find when i try to read something that's mixed characters and pinyin, i end up only reading the pinyin and ignoring the characters 😆

i’m minoring in chinese and i’m so excited to start studying!! i’m reluctant to learn anything myself so i don’t form any bad habits before i begin studying in a classroom setting though. but i’ve studied a lot of korean lmao
I'm technically minoring in Chinese as well!! (It's a joint honours in history and contemporary Chinese studies. so I guess major/minoring in Chinese😂). I'm scared as well about learning before hand but I've spent a year already at uni and pretty much figured out that it's all mostly your own study routine anyway. The classes are mostly for you to have access to guided speaking and writing. :)
both of my parents are from Malaysia. they mainly speak cantonese but im trying to learn Mandarin instead because my friend speaks Mandarin. Thanks for the tips! :D
Starting to learn Korean was a really exciting and rewarding experience for me, and what I did after I got the alphabet down was to just write words in Korean all the time, it didnt matter if I spelled them wrong I’d just write out nct members names or try to write down song lyrics as i listened to them. The first time I added the korean keyboard to my phone, I kinda laughed to myself because I never thought I’d be able to use it meaningfully but it’s been about two years and i find myself using the korean keyboard on my phone every day now. Im not fluent at all but its so exciting to be able to understand bits and pieces of dramas or vlives and kind of weave them together and understand that way. I wish you the best in your learning journey and just have fun with it ❤️

i speak chinese (mostly) fluently so idk why i'm watching this HAHA... but i would say that even i can't really understand a lot of wayv's lyrics (i think it might be because a lot of them aren't from the mainland). i live in shanghai, so you'd think i'd be able to understand more than i do but i guess i kinda live in an international bubble. ooh! also, i definitely agree with the writing with thin-tipped pens thing, i write with pencil mostly, but it's really hard to make definitive strokes with a pen/pencil that's too thick. i would also recommend listening to renjun's radio show if you don't already!! it's half in korean and half in chinese so it's helping me understand more korean as well :D (sorry this comment is so long oops)
I’m trying to learn Chinese at the moment and it’s pretty hard ;( but a tip I got from a Chinese linguistics teacher was to learn without characters for the first few months - as in only in pinyin - and it seems to be working so far..?? He said otherwise it’s too much information to try learn at once. I don’t know if people usually study Chinese like that though...but anyway love the studying-style video it’s making me want to study as well :)
i can confirm that we did learn pinyin before characters in my first chinese class, and focused a lot on how to read and properly pronounce the pinyin and tones. characters are useful for meaning, since pinyin sounds can be very similar, but once you start learning them in the hundreds, it can be pretty overwhelming. good luck with learning chinese! it's hard but we can power through~

I watched a couple UA-cam videos a little over a year ago and memorized it in an afternoon, I think you’ll find it really easy and refreshing compared to Chinese. Even though I don’t always know what the words mean when I read them, I feel like knowing it has really benefited me :) loved the video!!
I've been learning Spanish in school but just before quarantine I started learning Mandarin using duolingo. My mom made me go to Mandarin classes when I was younger so learning the basics has been a bit of a review. However I'm not sure how to practice speaking & getting the tones right because duolingo can't tell my if my pronunciation is good lol. Side note but in another one of your videos you talked about being mixed and how getting into kpop inspired you to learn Chinese and connect more with your chinese side of the family. For me it was crazy to hear that because that's exactly how I feel! I'm also chinese and white and when I got into kpop, especially seeing chinese idols who could speak chinese and korean and sometimes even more languages, it inspired me to learn chinese. Seeing idols from Hong Kong like Lucas and Jackson made me proud of the place where my family is from. Kpop made me more interested in learning about Asian culture in general and visiting Asia, especially returning to Hong Kong which unfortunately hasn't been an option first with the political instability then the situation with COVID-19. Anyway this is a bit rambly but I wanted to share because I never expected to hear someone express the same feelings that I've had around kpop and my identity!
ah i'm so glad to hear that! it's always nice to find other mixed people with similar experiences, because sometimes i find it can feel very isolating to have the complex experiences that come with being different parts of different cultures, but not fully belonging to any one? if that makes sense lol

It's also been interesting for me to see mixed kpop idols like Vernon, somi, and Kai from TXT. It makes me thing about life as a half white person in Asia and how you are treated differently and what my life would have been like if I had grown up half white in Hong Kong. Ig theres not much point to it but I just like thinking about this stuff 😅. Just mixed things ig lmao.
you can watch the chinese survival show idol producer! it’s really similar to produce 101. the first season of idol producer was for boys, and included got7’s jackson, exo’s lay, pristin’s and kyulkyung. the second season (which is airing right now), is for girls, and includes bp’s lisa, 9percent’s caixukun, SHE’s ella, and jony j. its in chinese and has subtitles included on the free app “iqiyi”, along with a lot of chinese dramas and movies :))

Yeah nobody just loves teaching English in Asia that I've met. As for your mom not understanding your Chinese, I can relate. I went abroad for a summer in Germany and came back so happy that I could speak German at a basic level and wanted to show off to my dad but he didn't understand a word I said. My German was too sloppy. As for reading Chinese.. have you tried reading on a kindle? I studied a lot of Japanese and I was always so jealous that with Chinese you can just tell it to add pinyin to all the hanzi. No such option for Japanese. And yes, this completely slowed down my ability to learn Japanese as compared to German. I'm finally starting in on Chinese which is how I found your channel. Good luck with your studies.
Please do a learning Korean vid. I have been sorta barely learning Korean for almost two years. But all I know is Hangul and some phrases you can pickup from dramas and stuff. I would love to go along with someone else who’s near my level. Especially cause nobody I know speaks of is willing to learn Korean with me.

Im learning Chinese as my 3rd language and also my major(?) at school (I go to a specialized high school and the school system in Vietnam is weird). At school we use the same textbooks as you do while at home I study with the Boya textbooks. We have Chinese students here at my high school but they arent really that good at Chinese haha 😂😂 Ive learnt Chinese for about 9 months now, we use the same dictionary app as you do mostly for cheating in exams because we make really little progress :)) We are doing HSK2 right now and the schools bar for graduating students in the 3-year classes is HSK4. Sorry if this comment is long uwu
