I sat directly across from them as they discussed what they were doing and the various inputs that are contributing to the problem and I had to figure out how best to paint their visuals so they could explain all of those different variables. These are brilliant scientists, totally immersed in the research. If they tell us that mankind is causing the globe to warm (and they do ! ! !), then we had better start taking the very seriously.
It is sad that people buy into alternative facts over verifiable facts.. I think she also has covered Soros, and in some other interview (I hope I do not mix anything up, she mentions that substantially more flows in from the Conservative than the Liberal side). Mayer's fascination with the Kochs and their super-rich allies is that they do not just focus on the big elections but everhthing in between, and thus way more effectively thannothers with regard to the impact they have on politics, judiciary, think tanks, universities, popular narratives. Her fascination with the Mercers (topic of this interview) would be that they are disruptors with a potentially big impact on the future of American democracy, political economy, the environment, etc. I agree with you with regard to shining light into the entire system regardless of from which spart of the political spectrum the money comes from.

Like many (most) people in this country and around the world (and David Magerman), I am deeply concerned about the issues you bring up. But I fear that it plays into the hand of the other side when we come across with too strong of an agenda, and don't get all the facts right. The ACL actually stands for: Association for Computational Linguistics (not what was said in the video). The piece from Bob's Lifetime Achievement Award was taken out of context. i was in the room at the time. The work that Bob was being recognized for was funded by the government. The government also funded most of the audience. Bob was playing to the audience. The audience isn't opposed to government-funded research, but they have strong opinions about how to fund research, and many of them think they know how to do so more effectively than it is currently done. For a better place to get a sense of how Bob views Computational Linguistics (and perhaps Wall Street and politics), listen to the opening remarks by the president of the ACL about firing linguists. There is a bunch of history behind that remark that the audience would know well. There is a reference to Bob's former boss (Jelinek), who could be outspoken, but had a sweet heart (Jelinek's wife studied linguistics at Harvard). But Bob makes his views on that subject clear later in the talk. It is hard to find connections between this debate and politics in writing but it has been suggested to me that there is one by people that deeply respect Bob (but also deeply disagree with him). I agree with the larger points -- Bob is a force to be deeply concerned about -- it is scary that the country (and Brexit) can be taken over by a single guy (with a few friends). But Bob is a force to be taken seriously and respected, especially if we don't agree with him.
It's a serious flaw in the Judge-appointment procedure when there is nil or flimsy obligation of the prospective appointee to declare supporters and the nature of that support, whether or not he considers recusal in specific or general cases. Where "big money" is the Applicant, I believe the latest score is 80-0 in their favour. That may have something to say about the Applicant being able to afford the best lawyers, but I remain sceptical.
If Mercer was hoping to shrink government rather than right size the government based on the tasks assigned, he did get the indiscriminate hollowing Trump favored. I suppose this is the ultimate end to Citizens United: Money is free speech and corporations are people, therefore the Constitution protects the political rights of corporations to enter politics in an unlimited way. Of course the dark side of that is the role of value. Just as Mercer has succeeded in divorcing value from trading in the Stock Market, he and his daughter dissolved the bond between value and government by, for and at the behest of the governed. Successful sizing government to the task requires the combined cortical horsepower of many individuals willing to work together. That is the opposite of Trumpism. Are they still with him? Some say not. Do the very rich ever feel buyer's remorse? Do they ever feel the empty spot of a seminal but fleeting opportunity that edged close to them but lasted too little time for their notice? Regret for a decision that did not turn out as we might wish is nothing to the remorse of recognizing too late that a good deed well within our power yet has gone undone forever. All those special children, lost.

Her fascination with the Mercers (topic of this interview) would be that they are disruptors with a potentially big impact on the future of American democracy, political economy, the environment, etc. I agree with you with regard to shining light into the entire system regardless of from which spart of the political spectrum the money comes from.
Maybe Mercer and Renaissance are so secretive because they are involved in insider trading. They wouldn't be the first hedge fund to do so.

Like many (most) people in this country and around the world (and David Magerman), I am deeply concerned about the issues you bring up. But I fear that it plays into the hand of the other side when we come across with too strong of an agenda, and don't get all the facts right. The ACL actually stands for: Association for Computational Linguistics (not what was said in the video).
The piece from Bob's Lifetime Achievement Award was taken out of context. i was in the room at the time. The work that Bob was being recognized for was funded by the government. The government also funded most of the audience. Bob was playing to the audience. The audience isn't opposed to government-funded research, but they have strong opinions about how to fund research, and many of them think they know how to do so more effectively than it is currently done.
For a better place to get a sense of how Bob views Computational Linguistics (and perhaps Wall Street and politics), listen to the opening remarks by the president of the ACL about firing linguists. There is a bunch of history behind that remark that the audience would know well. There is a reference to Bob's former boss (Jelinek), who could be outspoken, but had a sweet heart (Jelinek's wife studied linguistics at Harvard). But Bob makes his views on that subject clear later in the talk. It is hard to find connections between this debate and politics in writing but it has been suggested to me that there is one by people that deeply respect Bob (but also deeply disagree with him).
I agree with the larger points -- Bob is a force to be deeply concerned about -- it is scary that the country (and Brexit) can be taken over by a single guy (with a few friends). But Bob is a force to be taken seriously and respected, especially if we don't agree with him.
It's a serious flaw in the Judge-appointment procedure when there is nil or flimsy obligation of the prospective appointee to declare supporters and the nature of that support, whether or not he considers recusal in specific or general cases. Where "big money" is the Applicant, I believe the latest score is 80-0 in their favour. That may have something to say about the Applicant being able to afford the best lawyers, but I remain sceptical.

If Mercer was hoping to shrink government rather than right size the government based on the tasks assigned, he did get the indiscriminate hollowing Trump favored. I suppose this is the ultimate end to Citizens United: Money is free speech and corporations are people, therefore the Constitution protects the political rights of corporations to enter politics in an unlimited way.
Of course the dark side of that is the role of value. Just as Mercer has succeeded in divorcing value from trading in the Stock Market, he and his daughter dissolved the bond between value and government by, for and at the behest of the governed. Successful sizing government to the task requires the combined cortical horsepower of many individuals willing to work together. That is the opposite of Trumpism. Are they still with him? Some say not.
Do the very rich ever feel buyer's remorse? Do they ever feel the empty spot of a seminal but fleeting opportunity that edged close to them but lasted too little time for their notice? Regret for a decision that did not turn out as we might wish is nothing to the remorse of recognizing too late that a good deed well within our power yet has gone undone forever. All those special children, lost.
