I love soy sauce and chicken combo, so I tried to boil chicken and soy sauce and since soy and coca cola has the same color why not try that also? The results are in and I did not expect this.

Guga I am looking forward to the Jerk Sauce, BbQ sauce, Salsa steak experiment to rival the ketchup, mustard mayo one. Suggested side dish would be chili garlic plantains
Do more experiments with the giant flintstones steak
The ingredients are not in the description guga
I would love to see an experiment tournament. Head to head dishes until one is crowned ultimate experiment dish.
Considering a 2 liter of coke costs less than a small bottle of soy sauce, I imagine the soy sauce chicken costed significantly more to make. So as a budget option that coke chicken might not be crazy.
You might even boil down the coke to a little bit of a thicker consistency, so the flavor is more concentrated. Maybe that solves the "not so flavorful"-problem
Tbh at that rate just cook chicken adobo lol

I used to work at a BBQ place that marinated the chicken in a mixture of coke and dr.pepper along with orange juice and some seasonings and then smoked. It was actually the best chicken I've had from a BBQ place. Obviously boiling chicken in soda is very different.
In the Philippines we add Sprite or 7-Up in our bbq. I’ll add the orange juice. Sounds good.
I must say it is a bit weird to see what was basically a struggle food for me growing up becoming a side dish next to chicken boiled in Coca-cola
The turns life takes.

@@nickkorkodylas5005 they were talking about the egg dish.
They said it's inexpensive. Also that's just eggs.
lots of struggle foods are derivatives of side dishes, which is already a downgrade from main dishes.
Honestly a 50/50 mix of the 2 together would probably be the best especially if you like sweet and savory
I was just thinking that. Why not try one with both?
There's actually a Cantonese dish of coca cola chicken, but it's usually just braised wings and you reduce the coca cola mix until it becomes a thick gravy
yeah I've had that before and you literally can't tell that the remaining gravy is cola, it's just chicken with sweet sauce. It was nice.
@@omgwtfbbqxD Yea it is like a super sweet BBQ sauce (I always add a bit of crushed ginger, garlic, spring onion and some light soy at the end of the reduction)
That sounds SO MUCH BETTER
My uncle makes it from time to time, there isn’t any Coca Cola flavor left, but the flavor is great
I didn't know that's cantonese, I usually do that with a touch of orange juice too. Shit's delicious
For most Cantonese recipes for the soy sauce chicken, once you bring the soy sauce to a boil, you drop the chicken in, cover, and then kill the heat. The chicken tends to be more tender and juicy than having it cook on a full boil.
I suppose you need a cast iron pot for that, no?
@@SviatoslavDamaschin I guess for home cooking, that would be a wiser option. People used ceramic or clay pots in the past and most BBQ places use large vats.

@@OrvinReyes Depends. Some might say lower, some might say kill the heat. Depends on chefs, vessels, and size. Lots of factors. Traditionally, you’d kill the heat though.

Hi Guga
I am from South Africa and we often cook chicken in Coke. I normally boil the chicken in the Coke, then remove it and immediately throw in some potatoes to boil in the leftover Coke the chicken was boiled with.
After that you can pour some Coke in a pan and reduce it until it becomes a nice sticky sauce.
Then I put all the Coke boiled chicken pieces in a oven pan. Add the potatoes and some seasonal veggies and pour over that reduced Coke sticky sauce and wack in the oven with the grill function on and when nice and golden and sticky take it out.
Enjoy it just like that or with some basmati rice... Its DELICIOUS!!!

Here in the Philippines, we have a similar recipe. However, we mix soy sauce and Sprite, along with some aromatics (garlic, ginger, shallots, peppercorns, bay leaves). You just boil it and it turns to a similar brownish color and is extremely juicy as well.
I came into the comments to find the Pinoys!
The dish is called Humba if you add star anise and sprite. But if its just aromatics, its called chicken adobo with sauce

Coke Chicken (Wings) is actually a common homemade dish in Hong Kong and it includes both soy sauce and coke as part of the ingredients.
So we shouldn't be surprised the coca chicken was good.
Wow this video unlocked an old memory of mine. Back in the day when I was a sous chef I had a chef show me a recipe that this video reminded me of. We reduced a 2 liter of Coca Cola with a handle of Captain Morgan rum with onion, garlic, bay leaves, black peppercorns, and cilantro. We reduce it until it's thick like a syrup and then we add it to a sous vide bag with pork butt and cook it low and slow until it's super tender. Once it's all tender you can eat it like pulled pork, or throw it on a flat top grill and get it all crispy and caramelize the sugars a little bit. At first I was skeptical but it was honestly so good. I think I'm going to braise some chicken thighs in a Coca Cola/Soy Sauce type situation soon. Thanks for the inspiration Guga!

Hi Guga. Here is a video idea for you. I recently learned that snacks that use MSG sometimes also contain Disodium Inosinate and Disodium Guanylate to enhance the effect of MSG by 20x-30x stronger (for example, Doritos, Pringles, etc).
I'm not sure what ratio/blend of MSG, DSI, and DSG is needed, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere. America's Test Kitchen + Kenji Lopez Alt have a video that discusses some of the science behind it.
I was thinking the experiment could be this:
1. Steak + SPG (control)
2. Steak + SPG + MSG
3. Steak + SPG + MSG + DSI + DSG
Since the MSG, DSI, and DSG has sodium in it, the salt in the SPG might need to be reduced a bit, but it's up to you. Anyways, I hope you give it a shot!
Also ngl leo is kinda annoying no hate but he just seems quite extra we need the og angel or mamau to review them food
I wouldn't be surprised. I'm addicted to those friggin' snacks. For instance, Crunchy Cheetos are my Kryptonite. I am pretty sure there's artificial flavors in them, which have probably been designed to taste better than real life and make me eat them all. Either that or I have no willpower.
Leo seems like a nice guy. Why the hate?
@@AlinZamfiroiu you have the wrong comment section. This is the artificial flavors section, not the hate Leo section.
I actually prefer Leo to Mamau. You at least get a reaction there and some descriptive words...
@@Briguy1027 Thats the WHOLE POINT of the MSG unholy trinity. MSG is there to make the foods ADDICTING. They intend for you to BUY the food. The more you buy, the more $$$ they make.
Artificial flavors (and UNnatural flavors) do the SAME thing.
I make coke cola ham at Christmas, but I have to make it at Easter as well now my children have gotten older, as well as Aunts and Uncles who love it, I boil it with brown sugar, onions, carrots etc, then take it out and put it in the oven so it’s perfect, the liquid left from my boil is reduced to a thick sauce and poured over the ham, remember to remove the black stuff that rises while boiling, just skim it every so often.
So when we have a hurricane and we run out of water or soy sauce to boil chicken, we will always have Coca-Cola 😂😂😂
mad man guga back at it again
He looks like curly as three stooges
I can't say I've ever seen poultry boiled in Coke, but I have seen Coca-Cola chicken where the Coke is used to make a sauce for chicken. I've also slow-cooked with root beer, which I suppose is the same concept as what you did, without the burnt sugar issue.
Soy sauce boiled chicken is always going to have more flavor though, because salt is a natural flavor enhancer and Coke just doesn't have close to the sodium levels of soy sauce (~37 mg sodium per cup of Coke vs 14,000 mg sodium per cup soy sauce). Maybe instead of adding brown sugar like you did to the Coke, add salt? I mean, there was already more than enough sugar in the Coke as it is, and you could probably add enough salt to act as a flavor enhancer without making it taste salty.
Colas can be surprisingly handy when it comes to cooking. I know Dr. Pepper makes for a great basting liquid for hams and I've heard of home made BBQ sauces and braises that use cola and rootbeer. And this is something of an aside, but leftover coffee makes for an AMAZING addition to anything with pork.
@@Ninetails2000 Yeah all of that stuff I have either heard of or used myself. But none of that is the same as flat out boiling a chicken in coke.
I've always watched Guga for his experiments on steaks, now it's all about the side dishes!!!! Love it!
Should simmer the Coke until reduced to take out most of the water, makes the Coke taste more intense.

I've been making Coca-Cola chicken since the 70s! It's really good.
I don't boil my chicken in it, I bake mine in the oven, but it's the same concept.
I like the bit of a sweet taste, not as sweet as barbecue, but just enough for flavor, and it always comes out tender and juicy.
In the oven, some sort of magic happens and the caramel coloring disappears, leaving clear broth that is delicious.
The sugar also mainly seems to disappear.
I love Coca-Cola chicken!
I've got a question. Are you saying you *marinade* the chicken in Coca-cola and then bake it or are you putting the chicken in a tray full of Coca-cola and then *stewing* it in the oven? Curious about your method.
@@uqox Don't know how he do it but my take is this:
- Marinade the chicken in coca-cola
- Bake the chicken in the oven on low heat so it doesn't burn (since the skin has some sugar on it now)
- Boiled up the marinade with some starch to make a sauce
I have seen what's called beer can chicken where sometimes they will use coke. You stand the chicken on the can, they even make specialised stainless steel things now for it. It's difficult to do in the oven as a lot of them aren't high enough to take a chicken the other way up on a stand.

It only tastes so good, because coke tends to have lots of sugar in it. Most of it is sugar and caffeine😂
People really should try out and do it with just wings, it is so simple yet tasty
Actually in Indonesia, several stall sells Chicken cooked with Cola. But not similar with your way, Guga.
Is it sweet and chilli flavour?
I feel like this was an unfair comparison. Coca Cola only really has the Caramel Flavoring going for it. It isn't a Complex Flavor. Soy Sauce on the other hand is full of Umami. When used in cooking, it is a Complex Flavor. It also has Salt, which helps improve the flavor. The Coke, doesn't have enough salt. Even though your rub contains salt, there isn't enough salt in Coke to not wash out the salt in your rub. I feel if you had replaced the Brown Sugar in the Coke Boil with a decent amount of Salt, your results would be very different.
I usually mix the two together. Chicken and rice with a soy cola glaze is one of my favorite meals
Guga in 2025 be like: I dry aged my nephew Angel in sugar for 30 days and this happend!
Lmfao
The soy sauce one is called See Yao Gai in Cantonese. One of my favourite dishes.
I am malay, for my family (idk if other do the same) the chicken was boiled in the water with generous amount of ginger n garlic untill cook, after that we marinade it with soy sauce n make sure the chicken was covered with only soy sauce (the sweet one) like u cover your steak with butter for dry age then let it rest, 15 minutes is enough, but the longer the better. N then deep fry it with palm oil untill u get the beautiful colour with crunchy skin. For the sauce just use some garlic add ginger if u like, then use some chicken stock that u use to cook the chicken before, maybe one cup, then use the soy sauce that left over from the marinade process n add maybe 2 or 3 cup of sweet soy sauce, add sugar if u want then add some salt, then let it boil for 15 minutes. Optionally u also can use coconut sugar (i think the name) that we call it gula kabong in malay to get the soy sauce thicker n some additional flavour.
The Coca Cola is best used when you reduce it to get all the sugar from it. You also needed to salt it more so it probably was bland. Definitely could have gone a lot better.
My mom always cooked our Christmas ham with Coke, pineapple, and cloves. Super unique flavor, but it’s really good.

I've had beef cooked with cola a few times (braised I think), but not chicken. It works surprisingly well as a base flavor, although a touch too sweet for my tastes. It worked better as a small dish rather than main course, a whole meal of it was a bit much for me.
Cola Chicken IS a dish in South East Asia (specifically Malaysia)... It's a Nyonya/Peranakan-style (mixed Malay-Chinese culture) dish, it's usually boiled down and glazes the smaller chicken pieces, and not cooked in the same style as Chinese-style soy sauce boiled chicken.
Over here in Ireland and the UK a very popular dish is coca cola chicken and for a lower calorie version, diet cola chicken and it is delicious. You can also make a quick sweet and sour sauce recipe with orange soda or cola (and diet version for lower calorie) and garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vinegar and pineapple pieces (you can even leave those out and it is still a great, quick version). Much simpler than making a sweet and sour sauce from scratch and way easier to balance the sweet and sour taste.
Cooking chicken in coke is something people don't normally think about, hopefully it turns out.

I agree. Unless it is a top shelf cut, quality, and cooked right steak, I way rather just have same chicken. Chicken is much more consistently delicious.
His voice when he was saying what ingredients he was putting in just kept getting higher and higher😂😂
You two should be grateful. I'd be honored to eat chicken with Guga someday if he'd allow me.
Been marinating steak in coke for years, makes the meat super tender.
Yup tender and extremely sugary and unhealthy good luck with your analysis
Both good options, a small additional step of marinating the chickens would really improve the depth of flavor! I knew the cola one had promise, one of my favorite holiday recipes involves baking a ham in cola, brown sugar, and spices, always tasty!
This channel really knows how to get your attention
I told youtube to stop recommending, because I'm tired of seeing so much meat.... and they still got me 🙈
@@IndecisionTelevision Me too 🤣
My mom makes what she calls "hong kong" chicken. she uses soy, garlic and brown sugar and everybody loves it!!! The sauce becomes very sticky and flavorful
oh, there's a famous recipe in China called 可乐鸡翅. literally coke chicken wings. usually we add in some ginger in the coke, and remove them after a short while, then boil the coke until the coke becomes kinda thick. because of the sugar in coke, the sauce would be quite easy to stick on to the chicken and gives it more flavour
Gah damn, that’s delicious!
Guga sou Brasileiro e adoro seus vídeos vida longa ai chefe!!!!!!
Wow this sounds crazy, almost as crazy as dry aging a steak in toothpaste
Everytime I watch this my mouth gets watery.
I think I'll definitively try this one in the weekend.
This is actually one way we have our chicken bento box in Taiwan. Gooey skin but super flavorful to go with rice.. super yummy
So what would chicken boiled in beef broth taste like lol
my family actually uses coca cola to make many different things like braised pork feet or lo bah png lol
I’ve never noticed that when he lists ingredients he says them like he isn’t sure. Like it’s a question. Now I can’t unhear it 😂😂😂😂
I’ve never subscribed to a channel after 2 videos. This is wild, you’re blowing my mind
Cooking chicken with coke (the soft drink) is quite popular in Hong Kong as well. And regarding to how soy sauce is more expensive than coke, no we don't just use soy sauce but usually mix it with water so you can't just compare them like that. And they taste, pretty obviously, different and give you a different flavour.
Guga channeling his inner stalekracker. THATS MONEY DUDE!
in korea we use soda to soften the meat a lot. my fam uses coke for bulgoki.
1:20 Little bit of oil>?? Your eggs swiming in it . AHAHAH
Lol that's a pan deep fried egg lol 😂 1 of my grandmothers used to cook her fried eggs like that all the time lol ohh nostalgia lol 😂 💕
“Who Framed Roger Rabbit” 🐰 popped in my head when I saw all the knives 🔪 😂😂😂
Guga, please dryage a steak when it is wrapped in bacon, and another covered with bacon fat, and maybe another covered in like crispened up bacon bits to see how they will turn out! Love your videos!
Hi Guga, if you wanting that wow effect of the coke, instead of cooking a whole chicken. get yourself a pack of chicken wings and thighs, boil for 30min in salted water then add 500ml of coke and cook till you can see the coke thickening and becoming more like syrup, which takes around 15-20min. Hello to all from RSA
"...Caramelization?"
"No."
LMAO. I don't need to explain this one.
I worked in a kitchen when I was younger and spilled a fresh cup of fountain cola across the grill over a grilled chicken breast and finished cooking it and it was amazing.
No bro, i'm sorry the way you just voice this video and you are a cooking pro, is just god level. when i looked at your profile pick i said, ohh look some crazy nobody cooking chicken in coke, lemme dislike, 1:53 minutes in and i wa slike nah fam, this guy is a cooking god. well done keep up the great work, you've earned a new sub
after cooking this i usually save the soy sauce to cook dishes i usually cook with soy sauce or i dump in pre boiled and peeled eggs into the soy sauce.
Listening to the guy speak is just satisfying for some reason.
My family marinades chicken in coke and has for years. Makes the chicken so sweet and tender its incredible.
I seen this comment in one of Gugas videos a long time ago, and it said every time he names ingredients his voice gets high pitch 🤣🤣 and In this one I definitely noticed it
Ham is usually what my grandfather used with diet and regular Cola when he’d make some for thanks giving.
