Life cycle of spider mite

- Spider mite infestations affect many crops throughout the world. With their great reproductive capacity they can destroy plants rapidly. Adult spider mites can be red, orange, yellow, green or brown in colour. Both males and females usually have two large black spots. That is why they are called ‘two-spotted spider mite’. Spider mites cause damage to the host plant by feeding on plant tissue and plant sap. They mainly occur on the underside of leaves where they suck out the contents of the cells. These dead cells become yellow. As damage increases whole leaves turn yellow, and eventually the plant may die. Nymphs and adults also produce webs, and plants can be completely covered by them. They can reproduce sexually as well as asexually. Eggs are laid on the underside of the leaves. The larvae that emerge from the eggs are virtually colourless with two dark red eyes. Once they start feeding they become light green, brownish yellow or even dark green. The two dark spots also develop on the middle of the body. Once sufficient food is consumed, they become inactive and develop into protonymphs. Another feeding and resting period follows, that leads to a moult. The deutonymph emerges. After another moult the adult mite appears. With each moult spider mites shed their skin. The colour of the adults often depends on the crop on which they occur. The intensive use of chemicals has led to many spider mite populations developing resistance to pesticides.

I can't find any research on how mites make silk. Is it from the mouth? From some gland by the anus?
Or the feet even like the webspinnrr insect?

good camera for sure. you can see the guts in action with the translucent bodies. I personally hate spider mites. I havent had them in my garden a long time though. When I did...I took care of business with neem/Azadiractin oils and pyrethrum.
Unfortunately i only have 1 plant in my house and it became infected. How did you know it was mites anyway? I did not know until I used a microscope and saw the eggs.

@@paloosalama No, this could not have possibly been an electronic microscope, since then, it would have no colors...It probably is an optical microscope.
I was cutting a box privet hedge the other day and found the bottom cover in old cobwebs and tiny little white grains and flakes in the cob webs.. I just wondered what it was?.. if anyone would know..
Would it be harmful if it was spider mite larve or eggs, as during working I was at time breathing in some of this white bits?

There exist organic friendly options like abamectin, spiromefisan, neem oil + lemon grass essential oil combo, etc.
Even non organic options like propagite are life savers because of the minimal quantities required for a full knock out.
But most of the isolated compounds are effective only one or two stages of their life cycle. Thus a combo ensures the adult and the eggs both die.
Good information
Very informative..... 👊
Thanks....
I’ve heard mites are related to spiders, this is evidence of the closest mite to the spider.
They are arachnids, but not necessarily close. Spider mites just have the ability to produce silk. The relationship is as close as we are to canines or felines.
how are they everywhere where i have no plants?
You need to cut off the messed up leaves so the plant can grow new ones after you spray the mites with soap if the plant is still young in age...
Thank you!

My Dahlias and Zinnias got attacked by orange spider-mites... initially i thought that it was just some web of Spiders and leaves turning yellowish because of bright sun, in 3-4 days all five Dahlias almost died. then i sprayed mixure of 2 pesticides, but of no use... but i conclude the spray of mixture helped because of water to stop there growth.
just watched a video in which they says that the cold water spray will kill spider-mites.

@@ritikasinghchauhan8867 thanks... can you please tell the experience of getting rid off d white mealy bugs
@@gurwin86 u can try this chemical for mealy bugs, actually it is especially for mealy bugs " buprofezin 25% sc " in 15 liter tank of water use 50ml , or if you are using 1 liter of water use 3.3 ml per liter of water.. or if you need some organic treatment then use 5% neem oil or simply use a plain jet of water to disrupt the bugs feeding.
@@ritikasinghchauhan8867 thank you... water jet is not effective enough even for countable mealy bugs... rain works well though... i will prefer Buprofezin 25% at first,,,, will try neem oil afterwards.. thanks

I use 5 parts water, 1 part rubbing alcohol with a few drops of dish soap and wipe leaves and stems every other day. From what I read, the hatch time of eggs is about 3 days. This should take care of them quickly and efficiently
I also spray the soil with it too
Good, that stuff is not good for you
Phytoselius persimillis
Thanks a lot ❤️
I need to know how big they are and the damage looks like. Have tiny webs and discoloration but do not see any bugs on my house plants.
Sometimes they are too small to see... Spray your plant with dish soap or any natural soap to kill them off then trim the leaves so the plant doesn't waste energy on dead leaves...
say use a push pin to prick a leaf, any leaf. it leaves a mark? = thats how big. Initially left them alone thinking they are basil seeds (very small, dark too) until I saw one moved im like "uh oh, my plants are bugged and doomed!" 😱
im still harvesting well but now knowing why some pots constantly do so bad (due to pests). Youre welcomed.
@@henrietta9206 That was 2 years ago, today I am expert on spider mites, I check all my plants for them if I find them I isolate the plant and then spray the hell out of it with any bug spray every ten days, use paint brush to get into all parts of the plant I am bug free for a year and a half.
Why am i itchy now?
0:43 trying to hate these guys but they are kinda cute
Everyone so hateful towards bugs that eat plants yet when an animal like a deer bites the top off a small tree people are like ‘wow so cool’
that small tree is wild tree , bugs attack house plants which humans own , as simple as that ....
Every subject needs context, and therefore, nuance. The deer in the woods surrounding my house have kept the majority of brush/thorns nicely trimmed. This allows me to snowboard through the woods when we get good snowfall...
Thanks 🦌 🦌 🦌
It's either them or my plants. Sorry the deer aren't killing my plants
So how do you get rid of them ?
On most plants (including cannabis) it's just a mix of rubbing alcohol (any kind) and water in a spray bottle.
Spray during the night cycle of the plant to avoid sun or light burning, and they'll all die off.
Zen Jon yes I also add tablespoon of dish detergent 👍
You can’t. Best sign a peace treaty with them.
