Thank you Sir for sharing this talk with Lissant Bolton. Lissant was a dear friend of my father James Qwero who is now passed on but my father was the longest serving Vanuatu Cultural Centre Field Worker. My sister and her husband took over from my father to continue as field workers. She weaves a lot of 'bari' mats with different designs and uses traditional dyes to dye them. Wish more of this on your show.

Once I was a Peace Corp volunteer in Africa. I was always treated with great kindness and respect. A great experience. It was painful to come back to the US and see the unkindness.
Uplifting to know there are people like Ms. Bolton in the world. Such a caring and thoughtful person. Well done British Museum for supporting her work!

What a beautiful fable, and so different from the ones we tell here.
I loved this account of how things tie families together. Being from a very large family, I have missed seeing and being with family during this pendamic. We have not been able to have a family reunion or even hold a family funeral for my second eldest brother who was 93 and passed away. The separation has effected all of us. Such a very sad story 🌴I’m living in NYC - and since this Covid - lockdown, I have lost the last remnants of my family & friends , including my place of employment which was a great source of my socializing. I lost my dog & I lost my brother. I am living in a state of disconnection .. In a time when everyone is afraid of contamination .. Top it off with riots in the streets .. that lasted several weeks on end.. It is very clear to me, that it’s impossible to think of one self as “completely individual”7 & yet we are being forced into living as separate people ... what a nightmare 🎍
Miss Merry Berry So true. So much like a weird fever nightmare. I don’t know when we will all wake up with life somewhat normal. I’m so very truly sorry for all your losses and isolation. I’m in California and where I live we haven’t seen the worst yet. I don’t know how this will all play out. But we must all stick together and support each other if we are to survive this. You can contact me here if you need a friend. I can’t do much to make up for your losses but you aren’t alone in the world. I may only have my friendship to offer but if you need a friend, Im here.
My heart goes out to you. I'm glad people can still connect online. I am sure there are people around you that are also feeling disconnected and would be happy for your friendship. I feel bad for elderly people who had in-home caretakers because during the lockdown, their caretakers went home to their families and those elderly are alone now.

When I married a Frenchman in 1975 I moved from the States to France and just getting connected to anybody outside of my husband's very small, immediate family was very difficult. I had to force myself to go out n talk to people who usually ignored me everyday. I had to try really hard. It took time but it ended up paying off. I was young n healthy and nothing seemed impossible. The world has changed so much since then but don't give up. Perhaps when you're feeling better you might try volunteer work at yr local food bank, library or animal shelter. It could help to meet new people.
A fascinating & engaging account not only of the object itself but of why Lissant Bolton selected it for this discussion. However I'd like to raise a couple of points. At 3.19 she describes the article as being plaited. As a weaver my understanding is that in plaiting, individual strips pass under & over other strips but do not continue in the same direction, as they do in weaving. She also says (3.30) that Pandanus is also known as Cabbage Tree. Having woven with both I can assure her that whilst they are both monocots, they are of different plant families & have very different attributes.
It’s about having compassion for others.
jay of course this is how you learn compassion towards others is by having compassion for oneself.
It is also about the wealth of family and the poverty of being alone...

You say this on a video where the presenter clearly has a respectful relationship with the culture from which the artifacts came.
If you want something valuable you need to be strong enough to protect it.
