One thing my teacher stresses is that the benefits of making Istighfar is in proportion with the amount of Istighfar that is said, so if you can manage more, then do more in sha’Allah. If we can stretch to 1k or 2k or even 7k Astaghfirullah al-Azeem a day, then it is better than the minimum and will bring real beneficial changes into our lives in sha’Allah.
