I have deep respect for those that navigated this world, centuries ago, without modern conveniences.

I spent 1 season in the bearing sea ,at the time I was 45 years old and made that season $60,000 richer Now I am 59years old and I am gearing to go long lining for halibut! There is something in us that gets us to return every year and that is the Respect I have for this powerful sea.

Every ship I was on in Alaska, there was a nautical globe compass inset in the wheel house near the wheel and/or joystick.

A boat without an old-school compass is like a car without tires... I highly doubt there just blindly traveling along... lol

There's a camera boat that follows them around. I'm sure they couldn't pull gear but they definitely knew where they were going.

Thing is they're so far north a traditional compass probably won't be much use. You rely heavily on gyrocompass headings the further north you go

@@philipwright3847it is posted on the chart what the variation is for that area and you correct for deviation with magnets. How do you think Sigs father would navigate in the 70’s? They didn’t have GPS compasses back then.

@@philipwright3847 compasses still work but you need to have declination charts as it changes more quickly.

I always checked the fathometer reading against my course and present position on my watch . Gave me something to do . Also made hourly engine room checks . I enjoyed navigating the boat .
And if was getting tired I would stand for the rest of my watch .

You could clearly see one of the production team unplugging it to shut it off to make it seem like it just suddenly went out.

Was he faking an outage or a basic troubleshooting technique? They tried turning it off then tuning it back on. They should have waited 15 seconds before turning it back on. Given the situation, it might not matter. I wonder when the next season will be. I think the fishery is shut down so there won't be anything to catch except cod.

Only in a matter of life and limb can people have that kind of trust and willingness to help. Ships have ferried parts and even deckhands to help another boat, the saga saved a crew of another boat, etc. Seems the more dangerous a job the closer the bond between those who do it (cops, firefighters, emts, soldiers, etc)

And they have a chaser boat that does All The Longshots views so I'm sure they were relying on the other boats radar and navigational LOL still made for interesting television

They were only missing the auto pilot's compass feed (electronic). They still had a compass and to hand steer due to the auto pilot not working. Just a little inconvenient, still have radar and charts as well as redundant gps. Make believe drama.
