Max save was sheer brilliance, he was so close to the barrier that he could not continue with counter lock as that way he would do a 360 and put him in the barrier.
Instead he straightened out the wheel, that way the momentum of the car (possible mostly thanks to a wet road, on a dry road much harder, you need significantly more momentum) carried the car forward, then when the car slowed down a bit, regained balance and traction, he turned right and released the brakes.
As an example we can take Vettel from this video, he had all the road from left to right, if Max continued with counter lock (instead of straighting out the wheel), he would spun a 360, but because Max was so close to the barrier He would ended up in the barriers instead of 360 as the oversteer was going towards barrier side.

They're saves in the sense that instead of completely losing the car and hitting a wall/beaching on grass or gravel, they kept the car going.
Also because a complete 360 spin takes more skill to pull off (and wastes less time) than having to turn the car around from sideways or backwards.
