Also worth pointing out that overtime was shortened to 10 minutes in 2017.
This is all a product of the current trend of offense first in the NFL. You want a chance? Go stop them. I miss dominant defence preventing high powered offenses from scoring almost at will...
Agreed
College kinda screwed up their overtime by having 2 point plays after the 2nd overtime
I think each team deserves a possession in ot. Then sudden death with any score! Games should never be decided by a coin toss. One possession per team allows both offenses and defenses to showcase their abilities.
Correction.
Defense should have a chance in the spotlight.
Rules shouldnt favor offense.
Good video I learned something about football which doesn't happen often
NFL should do overtime like how College football does overtime
Use the college ot rules
Answering your question on what was wrong with rule. Every team deserves a chance to have possession. I mean just look at how the chiefs fans celebrated the coin toss win Vs bengals. Winning Coin toss was clearly an advantage therefore it had to be changed
LEGEND
ChiefsKingdom tried to change the Playoff OT rules after their bitter loss to the Patriots in 2019. 2 years later, ChiefsKingdom had been 2 years away from their Super Bowl title. Beat the Bills. And the BillsMafia purposed the same Playoff OT change. and well, its here. Also as a young member of the SteelCurtain, I wanted the OT Rules changed as we felt cheated after Demaryius Thomas took it in on the first play.
How can sudden death be fair when it comes to touchdowns taking place?
Let's take an example where both teams are equally good at scoring touchdowns, and bad at defending:
The team WINNING the coin toss will:
1. Score a touchdown when attacking first
2. (potentially) Fail to prevent other team from scoring a touchdown afterwards when defending second
Result: They win, because the game ends in a victory after their attacking phase
The team LOSING the coin toss will:
1. Fail to prevent other team from scoring a touchdown afterwards when defending first
2. (potentially) Score a touchdown when attacking second
Result: They lose, because the game ends in a loss after their defending phase
So even though both team are EXACTLY EQUALLY good, and the ONLY thing changed here is the ORDER of attacking/defending decided by a totally random coin-flip which has NOTHING to do with skill - one team gets an advantage from the coin, while the other gets a disadvantage. That's not how sports should be. And that's why the rule is not fair. It's not a casino. It's sports. Winning should not be based on random chance.
What about good defense.
Regular season overtime rules should be ten minute per OT with both teams get two possions with two timeouts
I like the old rules these new rules, just don't even make sense🩸
They might of well do continuous overtime 😒
John madden and I
For the postseason overtime rules should be fifften minutes with three OT with both teams get three possions with three timeout s
With coaches challge Wil be used
Lol that Lions and Steelers one, that one will never not be funny.
I remember back in 98 feeling undeserving for that win.
