Billie is the best to EVER do it Jack. Ty Harri Besties. Ty ty ☘️🇺🇲
Lady Day .... she has perhaps the most unique voice of all time.
Billie Holiday had such a great voice and a very distinctive way of singing. Thank you Ian and Harri.
Fine and Mellow with all stars from late 50s maybe best TV collection ever of jazz giants
Wonderful request and reaction. It didn’t get much better back in the day. Thanks Harri and Ian 🌺✌️
Ian, Your choice of dedicating this song to your brother and he had a very good ear for the greatness of Billie Holiday. Great review, Harri.
Thanks very much, Dave. Like the song you dedicated to your mother, these songs really hold special significance/feelings. They’re not songs we plucked out of a hat! I’m grateful to you and the other Besties for your kindness and sensitivity when commenting on a song request. As you well know, it means more than people realize 😉🙏🏼
Thanks so very much for reacting to this song, Harri. It was recorded in 1936 with The Billie Holiday Orchestra, which included Bunny Berigan on trumpet, among other great jazz musicians.
The sound quality is less than stellar because this was from the original master on Vocalion. No, the technology wasn’t there. They had only just started recording music about 15 or so years before this was released.
I chose this recording of this particular song for my older brother. This was one of his favorite songs by an artist who he dearly loved.
He passed away several decades ago when he was only 32 years old, sadly; however, his birthday is coming up.
Many many thanks 🙏🏼
"Strange Fruit" sung by Billie Holiday, when you feel the need to get into a somber mood. Otherwise, you might sample George Gershwin's
1924 famous, classic composition "Rhapsody In Blue", for something different.
You know that Frank Sinatra was a loyal confidant of Ms Day talked to her a lot about her phrasing. He shut himself up for 2 days in his apartment when she passed.
It's from 1936.
Are there any artists today that will be remembered as long as Billie Holiday, Patsy Kline, Etc. I might get beat up for this but here goes. A lot of the black singers from the jazz era stripped any black accent from their voice, but she doesn't. I don't expect Harri or any of his fellow Brits to hear this, but I'm curious what others think.
To your point, not a lot of Black artists are known for doing original recordings of songs covered by white artists. Moreover, Black music was called “race music”, and radio stations were segregated! People seem to be much more familiar with white artists. Jazz music is roots music- by Black artists in the early 1920s. Were it not for these Black artists, there would be no Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, etc. White people misappropriated Black music and decided that it was theirs. If you know anything about music history, you can’t argue this point. Racism is very real and very old. It permeates every aspect of society. It did back then, and it still does today.
I’m sure some people will get their undies in a bunch, but it’s because they don’t have knowledge and they just want to argue. Don’t even give them head space.
She was soo special. Wish you would have chosen a better recording.
What a Little Moonlight Can Do is my favorite from early 30s or her televisión appearance in 50s timex jazz shows.
Can't go wrong with Billie!
The diva
Thank you Ian ❤ What a wonderfull song 👍😊🥰
Do love Billie Holiday
Remember the song from a Fred Astair movie / if I remember correctly
Thank you Harri for bringing the song
Thanks very much, Agnete ❤❤
You do remember correctly, of course 🎉
Why am I not surprised?!

Billie Holiday had scores of successful, lighthearted tunes like this that let her pave the way to have the kind of clout it took to record and release “Strange Fruit.”
I prefer early Billie, 1930s, with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra, so many great tracks. If I had to pick one 'Miss Brown To You'
This IS early Billie! It was recorded in 1936- the same time that she was working with Teddy Wilson and her own orchestra. You don’t really know her work.
