Thank you Dvayers for sharing...I was beginning to think I'm hearing things, haha. This is all the video is...meant to listen, and learn to listen better, until you hear what it is you've been listening for. / The song you hear actually has a lot of versions, the one I'm using is called "Sei He Ki". UA-cam user "TheSuperZenSpot" has this exact version on their channel. All the best...IB

It's a shame that 50 years after his death, people without any authenticity profit off his teachings by plastering ads all over it. The longing for money, influence and approval forced on us by big tech / social media algorithms are a corruption of all Alan Watts taught. People have even co-opted his voice by letting AI generate endorsements for their snake oil business. The well has been poisoned.

I am a seeker. I've been meditating over thirty years and am always open to peace, learning, humor, and love. In my life I am so deeply touched by the extraordinary people I am honored to meet as an UBER driver. I look forward to the experiences of driving and hearing incredible new beings and their stories while we are moving and sharing as a form of meditation.
This video slides the bar of relaxation and peace so much further than I can remember. It enhances my overall wellbeing. What a combination to add to these other beautiful life experiences.

Me too! I'm autistic and have ADHD(oh, and 4 kids haha). I've been trying to meditate for over a year now and can't seem to get anywhere fast. That's okay. I keep finding inspiration to try again. This video is golden. It gives me enough of a distraction to keep my mind occupied with things other than, "what's fixing to happen, how long is this, how many minutes now, what was that noise", etc. Anyhow, I made it through the whole thing. lol That's good for me. Longest I've made it in silence was for 20 minutes and, I shit you not, I started seeing rainbow colored geometrical shapes. I know that sounds nuts; if it is, that's cool, I'm happy.
Apologies for the ramble, I have 4 kids, autism and ADHD. haha

    • @adamnilsson4417
      @adamnilsson4417 7 років тому +4

EY3CON U What makes something an interruption is entirely your choice. Even if someone calls your name, you can just sit there, they will eventually realise you aren't responding.
The point is to get to the state where nothing is 'pleasant' or 'unpleasant', where nothing interrupts you, where everything just is 'something'.
One can also ask: What are you being interrupted from? Meditation is basically living but with the dials turned up (more focus). If you get interrupted while living, doesn't that mean you are dead?
Since all happenings happens in the present, being interrupted is latching on to something that happened to examine if it disturbed your being in the present or not. Well since you are sitting there examining if it did that or not, you are answering your own question! Since you are now the one interrupting yourself by seeking to examine if something interrupted you or not! This is the nature of being interrupted, it starts out as just latching on to something, then trying to figure out why that happened and seeking to blame something other than yourself for the loss of concentration.
This is not an easy task, not interrupting yourself, but I truly believe one can accomplish great things by just letting oneself flow forward in time with the eternal happening.
Be honest with yourself, and seek the answers deep inside you! Look long enough and you shall find the nature of your being.
      Peace 😊

Well now, the easiest way to get into the meditative state is to begin by listening. If you simply close your eyes, and allow yourself to hear all the sounds that are going round and round you. Just listen to the general hum and buzz of the world as if you were listening to music. Don't try to identify the sounds you are hearing, don't put names on them, simply allow them to play with your eardrums. And let them go. Now the words you could put it - let your ears hear whatever they want to hear. Don't judge the sounds, there are no as if it were proper sounds or improper sounds and it doesn't matter if somebody coughs or sneezes or drops something. It's all just sound. And if I am talking to you right now and you are doing this I want you to listen to the sound of my voice just as if it were noise. Don't try to make any sense out of what I am saying because your brain will take care of that automatically. You don't have to try to understand anything. Just listen to the sound. As you pursue that experiment, you will very naturally find that you cant help naming sounds, identifying them, that you will go on thinking, that is to say talking to yourself inside your head automatically. But it is important that you don't to repress those thoughts by forcing them out of your mind because that will have precisely the same effect as if you were trying to smooth rough water with a flat iron - you are just going to disturb it all the more. What you do is this - as you hear sounds coming up in your head, thoughts, you simply listen to them as part of the general noise going on just as you'd be listening to the sound of my voice or just as you'd be listening to cars going by or to birds chattering outside the window. So look at your own thoughts as just noises. And soon you will find that the so-called outside world and the so-called inside world come together. They are a happening. Your thoughts are a happening just like the sounds going on outside and everything is simply a happening and all you are doing is watching it.
Now, in this process another thing that is happening that is very important is that you are breathing and as you start meditation you allow your breath to run just as it will. In other words, don't do at first any breathing exercise but just watch your breath breathing the way it wants to breathe. And notice a curious thing about this - you say in the ordinary way "I breathe", because you feel that breathing is something you are doing voluntarily just in the same way as you might be walking or talking. But you will also notice that when you are not thinking about breathing, your breathing goes on just the same. So the curious thing about breath is that it can be looked at both as a voluntarily and an involuntarily action. You can feel on the one hand "I am doing it" and on the other "It is happening to me". And that is why breathing is the most important part of meditation because it is going to show you as you become aware of your breath that the hard and fast division that we make between what we do on the one hand and what happens to us on the other is arbitrary.
So that as you watch your breathing you will become
aware that both the voluntary and the involuntary aspects of your experience are all one happening. Now that may at first seem a little scary because you may think "Well am I just a puppet of a happening, the mere passive witness of something that is going on completely beyond my control? Or on the other hand am I really doing everything that's going on? Well if I were I should be God and that would be very embarassing because I will be in charge of everything and that will be a terribly responsible position." The truth as a matter as you will see it is that both things are true. You can see it that everything is happening to you and on the other hand you are doing everything. For example, it's your eyes that are turning the sun into light, it's the nerve ends in your skin that are turning electric vibrations in the air into heat and temperature. It's your eardrums that are turning vibrations in the air into sound and in that way you are creating the world. But when we are not talking about it, when we are not philosophizing about it, then there is just this happening, this [sound of a gong est. 5 sec] and we won't give it a name.
Now then, when you breathe for a while, just letting it happen and not forcing it in any way, you will discover a curious thing that without making any effort you can breathe more and more deeply. In other words, supposing you are simply breathing out and breathing out is important because it is the breathe of relaxation as when we give a sigh of relief. So when you are breathing out, you get the sensation that your breath is falling out, dropping, dropping, dropping out with the same sort of feeling you have as if you are settling down in an extremely comfortable bed and you just get as heavy as possible and let yourself go. And you let your breath go out in just that way. And when it's thoroughly comfortably out and it feels like coming back again, you don't pull it back in, you let it fall back in. Letting your lungs expand, expand, expand until they feel very comfortably full and you wait a moment of waiting stay there and then once again you let it fall out. And so in this way you will discover that your breath get quite naturally easier and easier and slower and slower and more and more powerful. So that with these various aids - listening to sound, listening to your own interior feelings and thoughts just as if they were something going on, not something you are doing, but just happenings and watching your breath as happening that is neither voluntarily nor involuntarily, you are simply aware of these basic sensations, then you begin to be in the state of meditation. But don't hurry anything, don't worry about the future, don't worry about what progress you are making, just be entirely content to be aware of what is. Don't be terribly selective, particular say 'I should think of this and not of that'. Just watch whatever is happening.

To anyone trying this for maybe the first time, this is actually a very good meditation re: the concepts he introduces (treating thought as noise, the breath, etc), and is a fantastic place to start. I’d also recommend, just at some point, watching some longer form Sam Harris (and others) videos and learn what thoughts and emotions are in our minds, why trying to shove them down won’t work, and so on. The more you learn about tenants of meditation, the deeper you can explore the concepts and tailor them to your experience down the road.
Also Alan Watts is the best. It would’ve been really special to get to see him speak live

It’s so interesting; I can clearly remember focusing “on the buzz of the world” as a kid so often. It was so easy to clear my head, be now, like second nature. Only now as an adult do I recognize how beautiful and important that ability is to keep with us until we pass on. The ability to be one with now.

For me, I would probably describe brain fog as some sort of mental grogginess I experience. It's mostly an exhausted feeling I have up in my head which is accompanied by a lack of focus/alertness. After meditation I feel calm, as light as a feather, with a clear head. Don't get me wrong, I have to ''start up my system'' up there by getting to work in order to get improved focus after the meditation, so I'm not alert at first. Just calm, light, clear-headed and detached as much as I possibly can from biological desires and social formalities.

Mindful. Everything feel and looks much clearer. I rarely do these guided meditations anymore, but it was good to go back and try one.
I feel a calmness that will help me deal with any " negativity" I may possibly encounter today. I try to meditate at least once a day, or twice. I have noticed if I meditate in the a.m. before I pick up a thing or leave the bedroom my days are much brighter. Love and light to you all.

I tried this, and on the back of what I thought were my eyelids starting dancing in very very faint fractals as I was letting go, I felt this shiver through my body, the fractals were gone, but I saw what looked like if you go underwater, the shimmering of light beaming through the murky lens of my perception. It was beautiful, and so calming. For a minute, in my entire life, I felt at peace. :)

I do hate to disagree with someone who I share a love for meditation with, but I completely disagree. Well. I do agree that whomever made this video likely doesn’t know how to truly meditate, but arguing that the music in the background ruins the meditative state is like saying my ego stops me from becoming enlightened. Because we all surely know, there is no ego to get in the way, because it doesn’t exist. And I can’t beat my ego into submission. It’s like, as watts said, trying to straighten water with a flat iron. In fact, Hindu music often includes a droning noise similar to this background music. It represents the Atamn. What is always there. In the back of your mind. In the very deaths of your soul. The droning noise that we are conditioned to ignore. Just some food for thought

I grew up catholic, but as a young teen I stopped believing. In my high school days, 5 years ago I got into this. I don't know what to call it maybe Buddhism with other religions mixed in. I was taking acid very frequently and meditating and reading as much Buddhist philosophy as could. It was good because it got me to start thinking spiritually again, which I never did after leaving the church. Over time I thought that if I read enough, meditated enough, and tried enough, that I would eventually get to the destination or become enlightened for lack of a better word. But, it never came. About a year or two after getting into Alan watts, and Buddhist thought, I started to look to other places and explore the many different philosophies and religions. I never really knew what Christianity and the bible were about, so out of curiosity, I started to read it and read about it's history. I was fascinated with it and kept learning more about it. And, then there came a point were I knew I had to recognize the divinity of the bible, the spiritual knowledge and power it holds was too much to not accept its message. 4 years later, and I am still a believer, with more faith than ever, and i am the most peaceful I've ever been.
I stumbled upon this video again and decided to share my story with you in the hopes that at least one person reads this and gives the bible a shot. You don't have to believe anything, just read some of the books of the bible like you would any other book. Even if you don't end up believing, you will see the immense wisdom in it, and you will gain wisdom and knowledge.
I was never able to find peace in Buddhism, Hinduism, and other philosophy like Absurd-ism and Nihilism. But in the bible, I was able to find the peace and joy that I was looking for.
If you are curious and want to check out the bible, read the book of John for an account of Jesus' life; The book of Ecclesiastes, Job, and proverbs for wisdom; the book of psalms for the love of God. I pray anyone reading this finds peace.

Alan Watts was brilliant - one of the most important philosopher/ascetics who has ever lived. He has extensive sets of lectures from the 1960's that can be found as seminars in various places, including UA-cam. He gave up everyday material life fairly young to pursue where we had lost our way - and our true connection to the Universe we are woven into; and while he understood WHY people took Magic Mushrooms, L.S.D. and other hallucinogens, and never judged it as 'wrong' or harmful. What he DID equate it to was a shortcut to the top of a mountain, from which you can see glimpses of a truer reality, unfettered by the labels we put on objects all around us, which makes us separate ourselves from everything - but which never allowed us to stay there, because he knew the key to attaining that state at will, or permanently (achieving what Buddhist Monks at the highest level, who attain the highest state of awareness, eventually release their spirit as a "Rainbow Light Body," during which a rainbow streams out of their body - which shrinks and becomes lighter and lighter, until the energy level they have achieved allows them complete connection with Everything, and to no longer need to pursue what our spirits have spent thousands of lifetimes learning to achieve, and their bodies de-materialize. While this may sound a little "Woo-Woo" to many steeped in a Western materialistic point of perspective that we must label everything, associate other things with it, and find a way to USE it, instead of simply BEING, in Unity with a living Universe which is itself a living thing thing. His philosophy was to use spiritual and ancient techniques, like those he discusses here, that allow you to REMAIN in a completely aware state. Anyone who is interested in what he is saying - and can hear how completely relaxing, clarifying and awakening this man was, and taught others to be - should read one of his first books: "The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are." His last book, before he died, was "Cloud Hidden - Whereabouts unknown," and was one of , if not the most - profound books I have ever read and experienced. He left behind the life of accumulating material possessions, and for the rest of his life, sought to find the Universal, binding Truths underlying all religions and modes of Spirituality. The world is a much poorer, and dreary place without the light that simply shone from the spirit of this man. His lectures and his books are voluminous - we were lucky that he lived in a time of recorded media. His voice was completely genuine - he was a calm, deeply spiritual being who had reached a state of complete awareness that is the end-result of all consciousness life. If interested, please start with book I mentioned above - "The Book..." You won't regret it - it may change your life.

the 'creator' is the creation, coming through you, me, and every living being, not just some boss who sits on his ass somewhere, that'll be the so-called 'devil' :)

Hansol you will not be disappointed. Whatever your views are on matters of mind, religion, or philosophy...Alan Watts always presented interesting and important perspectives and ideas on a range of topics

Alan Watts' book have a very different rhythm than his talks... I have always been fascinated by the differences arising from my experiences of him in both modalities.

To you, who put this video together, Thank You! The music is perfect, so compelling and relaxing. This video would be far less effective and useful without it, and only half as long. Great job!

Stephen Mattison I was actually wondering where the music was from. Like you, I find that it deepens the experience. I’d actually like to see what a meditation would be like with this music only.

The music is by Jonathan Goldman - prior to and after becoming a reiki practitioner, I listened to JG exclusively. Absolutely captivating and Watts is incredible in his own right. Great combination.

Alan Watts is incredible. More people should listen to his messages. They are fundamental.
