Shifted Load Almost Flips Container

  • Shifted Load Almost Flips Container. Oh look, a container that ISN'T on its side! Close call with this driver, who said he felt his load shift and stopped mid turn as he felt the container coming over. These are scary and I see them happen too often, usually they keep falling until the container rolls over.
I arrived at approximately 2:00am in Hulk, my 50ton Rotator, followed by Alex in Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator. The new 2024 Landoll was driven by Java Joe himself. These look scary, but with some quick and efficient work we got it off the chassis and onto the Landoll in no time. Once we got to the customer's yard, it was even faster to offload.
All in all, the entire job, from the moment we showed up, until we were leaving the customer's yard, was 1hr and 40 minutes. We are just too fast, but realistically most jobs should be this way when you know what you're doing. The rain did but a damper on things and got my equipment wet; luckily Alex's DJI Action 4 is waterproof and I'm able to do this entire video.
One super cool thing we did (Alex's suggestion too) was rotate the container BETWEEN the trucks to allow Joe super easy access to back up. This is a bit of an advanced move that we've done often together and personally I think looks awesome to see.

another crazy container rescue and thanks for sharing as always. At least the driver had some quick thinking to prevent it from being any worse! There is a 3rd party waterproof case for the pocket 3.. but it is only the device.. not with the handle thread mount or the battery handle and with the screen in portrait mode only. DJI have no plan as yet to release an official case for it :(

In the beginning I was wondering how the Landall would be okay if the load was shifted and uncorrectable. Then I saw how you guys shifted the container to one side of the Landall. Then Josh started thoroughly explaining the concept. Thanks guys...

It appears the fifth wheel being a non stabilised version that can only pivot in the front to rear orientation, has allowed the trailer to lean over when the prime mover turned at 90° to the trailer. When the trailer is in this position the fifth wheel pivot direction is across the trailer allowing it to tilt if loaded unevenly. I drove a prime mover (tractor in USA) that had a ball race fifth wheel that had the top plate prevented from turning under the trailer by virtue of a block welded behind the king pin. The fifth wheel turned on the ball race thus ensuring the front/rear rocking motion of it was always lined up with the trailer, not the prime mover preventing situations like in the video.
